The fastest way to to learn language is to talk with the kids. They have a very common language. It's much better if you talk to the kids. That's where you'll learn their language. Because they're the ones who have the lowest level of language. The first thing is I struggled to speak in Cebuano, but my companion told me to speak with the kids. So that's the way I can learn.

Honestly, when it comes to language tips, all you really need to do is just never stop speaking the language. Never stop trying. Ask people all the time, whenever you hear a word you don't understand, write it down or ask them immediately what it means. When you want to try and use a word, ask them what that word means. Just never stop trying to speak the language. Even if you sound dumb at first, if you never stop trying, you're going to get better at some point. Just don't stop speaking, always ask questions, write down every word you hear that you don't know, and eventually you'll just get better at it. After a while, you'll understand everything people are saying and you'll realize, copy Filipinos. Just copy how they speak and copy what they say.

For learning Tagalog, you definitely need to just practice saying things all the time. Even if you can only substitute like a few words of Tagalog in for an English word in a sentence, like any little bit of practice will help you. And just keep trying to say things because the more mistakes you make, the better you're going to be with Tagalog. Other than practicing and just talking at every opportunity you get, I would suggest bringing little like flashcards with you so that way when you're walking you can flip through those little flashcards and commit things to memory.

The Yolongos, especially, are impressed when you're really good at their language. Especially if you use a deep word that is not very common. They're like, whoa, you're so good at our language! And they will love you and take you in, even if you're actually not very good, but they can see that you're trying hard.

The island of Iloilo has about four or five different dialects. Two of them are fairly similar to each other, but the main one you'll speak is Hiligaynon or Ilongo. They speak it anywhere on the island, but you'll also run into one they call Akyanon in the province of Aklan, one called Karaya in the province of Antique, and you'll run into a lot of Tagalog, because Tagalog is everywhere. They're all very similar, but don't be surprised if you go somewhere, they sound a whole lot different than you're used to, and expect to maybe pick up a few more languages on the way.

Filipinos will understand you better if you speak English slowly than even if you speak the language quickly. At least that was my experience nine times out of ten. So when you're speaking the language, if you just slow down, they'll understand you like a million times better.

So one thing to help you get the accent down is that as Americans we kind of talk with the front of our mouths and like shape things up here but Filipinos speak or Cebuanos speak excuse me using their throat so you want all of your things or your words to come through the back of your throat and it's kind of a hard thing to get used to but once you do it you sound so much more authentic. Another thing to watch is just your vowels because Americans we say like ah and their a is like ah and so there's a big difference and you'll sound a lot better. Another thing is that Cebuano is very choppy so you just accentuate each syllable and you'll also sound even more like a Cebuano but most of all don't stress about the language because the more you love the people the easier it will come.
