So some unique experiences in my career actually started in college where I got a degree in medical laboratory science and worked as a clinical laboratory scientist for seven years before starting residency at the University of Iowa. Having a background in the clinical laboratory enables me to speak the language of the laboratory so when something goes wrong and stuff always goes wrong in the laboratory that needs to be fixed or tweaked the scientists don't have to translate for me as a kind of a clinical doctor but they can speak the technology side of things and I can pick up right where they are we can resolve the problem and move forward with proper testing. So I actually encourage anybody desiring to go into pathology to strongly consider an undergraduate degree in medical laboratory science as it will set you up for medical school beautifully.
