How to be a good father - Parenting Video Transcripts

One thing that I strive to do as a dad that church leaders, I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, have encouraged is to have one-on-one time with each child and I'm not perfect at it but we have three little girls and two of them are old enough really to have one-on-one time and so each Saturday I try to take turns with them and have one-on-one time with them. We call them our daddy-daughter dates. Melissa, my wife's dad, did that with her children and he called it sad time. Saturday afternoon with dad. It's really been a good thing and it's something I plan to continue to do. Sometimes we draw and color pictures because my girls are young. Sometimes we go on walks and hikes. Sometimes we go to a playground and I'm not perfect at it but I strive to make that a priority on Saturdays.

Be present, be present with your wife and in her life what she needs and wants and be present in your kids lives, get to know them, get to know what they like and what they want to do.

I think some ways to be a good father are to be patient with your children, to be a good example to them, to provide for their needs, to show a lot of love to their mother, to be a good example in whatever you want your children to be. So if you want them to be healthy, you eat healthy. If you want them to be patient, you be patient. I think being a good father means to never yell or to hit. I think it also means to try to put your wife's needs and your children's needs before your own, to work hard and to strive to be a happy, joyful person that sees the bright side of life.

You might think this doesn't belong in the parenting category, but I think it does. I think a good father makes sure their children know how to pray and how to receive answers to their prayers. Answers to prayers can come in many ways. I won't go into that now, but I think it's important to pray with your child. Maybe take turns on different days or nights praying and then even talking about it afterwards. Emphasize giving yourself time for some reflection before or afterward.
