One of my favorite things about being a musician is that there's just so much to do. If I had a nine-to-five job that was just the same thing all day long, every day, that would be super hard and I know a lot of you would agree that that takes some dedication or patience. So I love that I can do lots of different things. I teach piano, I direct a choir, I compose, I arrange, I get to perform sometimes, and all those have varying forms. So I teach online and in person, I teach group classes and individual lessons. Sometimes I compose little songs for students, sometimes I compose big things for orchestra and everything in between. And so I just love the variety that I'm in control of, honestly. So, well, for the most part, that a lot of other careers you don't have as much control. So if you're thinking about being a musician, think about that one little benefit.

Favorite aspect of being a pianist for me is summarized, I think, really well by a quote I saw from Professor Thomas Bagley when I was going to school at Salt Lake Community College, and he basically said that music is quite abstract and that it's not very specific when we communicate unless you're talking about emotions, in which case it suddenly becomes surprisingly more specific than we can be with words. And for someone like me who's on the autism spectrum who often has trouble finding the right words to convey certain emotions, music is the perfect outlet to do that. Whether I'm playing or singing or writing it, even if I'm writing lyrics, the music that you can put behind the lyrics often communicates ideas that the lyrics alone just can't do, and that's probably one of my favorite parts of it.

One of my favorite aspects of being a musician is that it's something that can just keep on giving. You know, you write a song and you just never know how far one, how far it's going to go, and two, how it's going to affect people. Seeing some of those effects of people who really enjoy your music and appreciate it after all the work you put into it, it's really something. And music's great because you can use it over and over again to bless people in a variety of different circumstances and different places. And that's just a really powerful thing. And you never have to ask yourself whether or not you're making a difference.
