I homeschooled two of my children when we were moving to Hawaii many years ago because I had done my research and done my very best to find a decent school on one of the islands. Hawaii is not known to be a great educational state, so I found a decent school. I sent my third grader at the time to school there. The very first day he came home and said, Please pull me out. It was miserable. The teacher yelled at everyone and totally ignored me. I pulled him out right there and then and became a homeschool mom overnight. I did not want my son to be miserable. We were kind of thrown into it last minute. I found some curriculum I liked, reached out to some friends, and I was a former teacher years before he was born. So I wasn't going in completely blinded. We had a great semester. We actually were then able to move to a different school district, try out a new school. Then in the fall, he was successful there. But I homeschooled so my child would feel comfortable, confident, and we could spend good quality time together.
