People say Finnish is one of the most difficult languages to learn and I personally can't say if it's true or not since I'm a Finn, but I do know that the easiest way to learn Finnish is to start with simple things. Start with phrases such as hyvää päivää, mitä kuuluu, minun nimeni on. Those are very straightforward and easy to learn and even if you're not able to speak very well, Finnish people are very understanding and they most often guess what you're trying to say and they are forgiving, so I think you should not be scared of making a mistake. Sometimes if people don't understand, you just keep on trying, keep on doing and people will eventually, like they're very happy when you just make an effort, truly.

There is a good chance that you're a bit of a perfectionist, you're used to getting pretty good grades in school, and you may have some OCD tendencies. You might have really, really meticulous handwriting, and be really specific about how you write and draw things. A lot of us are like that. Let me tell you, the language is going to kick your butt, but that's okay. The best advice for learning Finnish is study hard and pray hard, and it just comes down to that. Just do the absolute best you can. Once you've accomplished that, and you can say, I speak Finnish, there is nothing that you can't learn.

I do think the Finnish language was hard for me to learn and it's still hard for me. But I think every language is hard to learn in its own way. I don't think Finnish is any different than any other language. And like everything in life that's hard, it's worth it. If things would come easy, then it wouldn't be satisfying. So it's a real blessing. It was a blessing to me to have the chance to learn Finnish because I learned a lot about myself and I think I became a better person because of the challenge that it was. And also when I was able to get a decent grasp on the language, I felt really good about myself.

I found one of the neatest tips in Finnish is the way the stress works. They always stress the first syllable and taper off at the end. There are no prepositions in Finnish and so all the prepositional things that we do in English happen at the end of the word. If you don't remember it or you don't know it, it's pretty quiet by that point at the end of the word and sometimes you can swallow it and it'll get by and they'll pick it up out of context. As mentioned in a couple of other videos, the Finns are super understanding and kind about the language. They get that it's hard. Just be grateful you're not having to learn English as a second language. It's infinitely better than that. You'll learn more about English learning Finnish than you probably did in school. But it's a fantastic language. Just listen to it. Listen to the pace. Listen to media so you can catch how the Finnish sounds.

I think that the best advice I can give on learning the language is not to compare yourself to other people. Once I learned to just not compare myself and to focus on learning the language so I could help other people, it became a lot better and so much more fun to learn Finnish.

You've probably heard that Finnish can be a tough language. Well, I do want to say that, yeah, it's really different from English. Anybody can learn Finnish. Anybody can learn Finnish, that includes you. If anybody were to put in time and desire to learn Finnish, they can. I would do anything you can to get into with the Finnish culture, listen to Finnish music, watch Finnish radio shows. I love doing that. Don't be frustrated if you're not improving as fast as you can. You just need to put in some effort and it'll all come out fine in the end.
