Extreme weather - Finland Video Transcripts

Finland is cold. I do remember riding my bike one night around the first of the year through Mikkeli and we saw the bank clock said negative 36. And so that's pretty close to where we're Celsius and Fahrenheit meet at negative 40. So that's also pretty cold weather to be riding your bike in. I'd have to stop, pull the mittens off, cover the eyelashes till they thawed out, do that on both, put the mittens back on, ride as fast as we could to get through it. But that was pretty exciting, but it can be cold there, but the summers are gorgeous and the weather's fantastic.

Winter is pretty long, and maybe if you're not familiar with Finland, it's especially dark during the winter. So in the southern part of Finland, sun comes up about 11 a.m. and goes down about 3 p.m. I'll tell you this, it's always better when it snows than when it rains, because the snow won't get you all wet, but the rain will. So you could buy a winter jacket here in the U.S. or in Finland. I feel like for rain jackets, sometimes they have a better breathable option over there in Finland, just because there's a lot of European brands with that kind of weather. But just dress in layers. That's my biggest advice, dress in layers.

So the thing about Finland is everybody's going to tell you it's cold, that's a given. But one thing that I wish I had known before I went was that in the winter months, when the sun comes up, if you're in a place like in the south where it will come up, it'll stay on the horizon pretty much. And so when you have those three or four hours of sun, not only is it going to be kind of cold already, but it's just going to be a little rough because the sun will just kind of stay over the horizon and it'll feel like you go from night to a sunset for about three hours and then it just goes back to night again. That was a pretty crazy thing to me because I kind of expected that there would be more light in the day, but it just looks like the evening in the winter when it was, you know, like 12 or 1 in the afternoon or anything. But yeah, that was kind of something interesting to me.

Since Finland is so far north in the winter the sun hardly ever comes up so it gets really really dark and really really snowy so make sure you bring plenty of warm clothes but then the summer totally compensates for the long winters because in the summertime the sun never ever sets and so in June and July you'll wake up at three in the morning and the sun will be super high in the sky you just feel so energized and so full of happiness during the summer months

Finland can have different types of weather for sure. Here in the south, the weather is quite mild, relatively. During wintertime too, we don't get too many extreme minus 25 degrees celsius weathers, even though this past winter we have had minus 20 degrees or something like that, but it's not very common in the south. But if you live somewhere up in the north, it can get really really cold during wintertime, even like negative 30. I'm not gonna lie, but the summertime is very nice too. If we happen to have a very beautiful summer, then it can be very warm, like plus 25 celsius, up to 30 sometimes, and it's really nice.

I got three full cold winters and spent the last one up in the northern part in Kemi and I just remember walking the streets with it being about negative 25 not including the windchill and you just can't feel your toes your fingers and there's there's no one out but it is just so beautiful because of how white it is and how cold and how you just feel you can just really not feel anything is actually how it is

You know that stereotypical grandpa who talks about back in his day he had to go up hills both way in the storm to get anywhere? Uh, my first winter was kind of like that actually, um, but on a bike. It was actually pretty fun. Um, I got studded tires for my bike which actually helps a lot. Have a good sense of humor and just enjoy it.

It gets cold in Finland, especially up in the north during the winter time. The thermometer would say like negative 30, I think negative 35 on some days there, but we were right on the the sea and so the wind would just constantly be blowing and it would just absolutely freeze us. We were just so cold and so that's something I have never experienced here in America. Like a cold, so cold that it freezes like through your jacket and through everything. It's cold, it's cold.
