Experiences with doctors - Fibromyalgia Video Transcripts

I am lucky enough to have the same doctor for 43 years. He's just a GP but he nailed the diagnosis of fibromyalgia right away. I had 17 of 18 pressure points and insomnia. I have definitely got fibromyalgia and I've never felt a need to discuss this with any other doctor. I know I'm lucky.

My experience with doctors has been horrible, other than my PCP, who loves me to death and she will help me out in any way that she can. But when it comes to any kind of specialist or anything throughout the years, no one's been able to just directly pinpoint one thing. I always have to go doctor to doctor, medication to medication, even with just recently being diagnosed with fibromyalgia about six months ago. My pain management specialist has put me in for rheumatology to confirm that diagnosis, even though she diagnosed me with it and also do all the tests for rheumatoid arthritis and all the other things associated with that. So be picky about your doctors. If one doesn't seem to have an answer, try another.

There are many different doctors that will see patients that have fibromyalgia or have fibromyalgia symptoms. Those doctors may or may not have the actual experience in working with those patients. If you want to see a doctor that has experience, make sure that you call before. Call beforehand and find out that information before you go to see doctors and waste your time or monies to see those doctors. Make sure that you get doctors that have good experiences with that because you want to be in the best hands possible.

I was diagnosed by my primary care physician. He has been great. He's not the most well-versed person on fibromyalgia, but he does research as I come to him with things. I have been considering going to a neurologist. I know some people with fibromyalgia also go to a rheumatologist.

My experience with doctors, I had a good doctor, he put me through every test, every scan possible to find out what was going on. Some consultants put it down to wear and tear, saying there's nothing wrong. I now have a good group of doctors around me that know me and know what's wrong. Get yourself a good doctor.

None of my experience with doctors has ever been good. When I was in my early 20s, 18, 19, 20, I was diagnosed with depression, and I had already been diagnosed with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. They didn't want to give me pain medication because I was 20-something, and the medicine that they did give me didn't help, and the medication they put me on for my depression made it worse. I wound up suicidal in the psych ward, and that took many years to go through. And then later, when the pain became unbearable again, I went back to the doctors, and they gave me pain medication, finally, that worsens my depression. So it's been a long, hard, difficult road.
