What I wish I knew - Entrepreneur Video Transcripts

So when I was first learning about entrepreneurship, software was like a really big push. There are so many forms of entrepreneurship, so many, so many, and so many of them can be pretty rewarding. Sure, the more risk, the more reward. Everyone talks about making tens if not hundreds of millions or billions of dollars. I'm of the notion you can find immense success, impact, and growth. It's all about growth. If you're making more, doing better, doing more, eventually, I'm of the opinion that you're going to be extremely satisfied with where you end up. But you can have immense satisfaction even with six-figure, small to mid-seven-figure sized businesses, but it's not talked enough about. I should have put this in other resources. Getting involved in all of the ClickFunnels community and reading all of Russell Brunson's stuff is really, really good. You can start a business for minimal to nothing and testing it, go look at ClickFunnels to do that.

Two things I wish that I knew about building a business before I had started is one, that I wish I had reached out to other people sooner, that I had asked for help, that I had networked, that I had collaborated with other people much, much earlier on in my business. There's just nothing quite like having a thought partner or someone to help you out and encourage you along the way. And the second thing I wish I had known earlier was that you just have to ask for help and you might have to pay someone else for that help and it's going to be worth it. Because time is money and money is time and sometimes you just need to pay someone to get it done a lot faster. You might be able to build a website but if it's going to take you six months to get it done and that's an integral part of your business, it's well worth your time and money to pay someone else to do it. So I wish that I had outsourced some of the harder things in my business sooner.

What I wish I knew when we got started is that it's not always worth it to build your own solution. Being a tech company and having developers, you fall victim to the mentality like, oh we can build this better than other solutions out there. And especially in startup mode where it's like you're trying to cut costs, it's like you feel like it's cheaper to just pay employees than to manage and build your own solution. But oftentimes it's better, whether it's a billing system, a CRM, things like that, it's just better to pay for the best service out there and really focus on what it is your solution is for your customers. Don't get distracted by building solutions that other companies have done, just pay for it. Because in the long run, you'll save money letting them do what they do best and then you building what you do best.

What I wish I knew when I was 25 years old and getting started in business, I would recognize the importance of equity or stock in a company versus getting a cash reward for services. I was a young lawyer and I would get paid by the hour and that sort of thing, but it's not until you get equity in a company or stock where your net worth can really accelerate in a huge way. The first stock options I ever got was at a company called Prime Computer in 1980 and I didn't realize the value of those until a couple of years later when the base stock price was 10 bucks a share and the company stock price on the New York Stock Exchange had increased over 50 a share. That's equity. You want equity.

One of the things that I wish I had known early on is that self-care is actually a good use of time. I spent several years not getting enough sleep, not prioritizing my health and wellness, and putting my business and my family above above me. Well that caught up with me and I went through a cancer journey this past year and some other health challenges that I felt like were related to me not taking care of myself and prioritizing what my body and soul needed. I wish that I had realized that earlier. People probably tried to tell me but I wasn't in a position to listen. Take care of yourself along the way. Yes, you might grow a little slower if you do that. You might not make 19 cells. You might only make 18 cells that month or whatever your metric is. But I wish I knew that life is a long time and you don't want to burn out. This is not a sprint. This is a marathon. It's a life marathon. And so pace yourself. Be patient with yourself and take care of yourself.
