How I got my job - Entrepreneur Video Transcripts

How did I get my first job? Well, actually, the two best jobs I ever got were as a result of just walking in. While I was in law school, I was desperate to get some help and to find a job. I'd done really well in law school, but the golden path wasn't there for me quite then. And so what did I do? I went to Los Angeles. I interviewed with three law firms. I'd actually sent out 60 resumes and only got three replies. But those law firms were looking for people from Harvard, Stanford, UC Berkeley, et cetera. And so I was frustrated and downtrodden. I remember after the third no, I was in an elevator in Hollywood in a high rise. And as I went down that elevator, it stopped at the 10th floor. I looked out and there was the name of a law firm, Ersfeld, Ersfeld & Younger.

The question about how I got my job as an entrepreneur, the best part is that you create your own job. You create it, because as an entrepreneur, you create a business, you create a company. And so being able to think through a need, a problem in the market, something that you can do to help people, and then you solve a problem that people are willing to pay for, that is the true freedom of being able to create your own job. The chance to help people, help the world, make it a better place, because you have solved a problem as an entrepreneur, that's a phenomenal feeling. And as you continue to gain more and more success, you can help more and more people. And then you can invest in other people's businesses as an angel investor, and help them change the world as a better place. It's just a wonderful, wonderful way to go. And honestly, just, I love entrepreneurship.

I'm going to talk to you about how I got my job, which is interesting because the job I have as entrepreneur and CEO of my own company is not one I applied for, no one read my resume, it was one I created. And I started my business by just realizing, hey, I want some control over my schedule and I've got ideas, I've got dreams. I had worked at the Deseret News and the New Era Magazine and had made some connections in the industry and decided I wanted to jump forward and start my own thing. And so the way we launched is how I got my job. Who hired me were hundreds of advertisers and thousands of readers. And we published the first issue not knowing if we would make money on it. We ended up making a teensy-tinesy bit of money on that very first issue in September 2000. And then from there, we grew Utah Valley Magazine. We added other titles, Utah Valley Bride, Business Q Magazine, Prosper Magazine, and others. And I just created my job by having a lot of different bosses.

So how I got my job is interesting. I was doing the accounting program at BYU, really actually hating my life because it was so boring to me. And a good friend of mine, Tyler Slater, who I went to high school with, was the co-founder with Josh, who's the founder and CEO. And they were working together. And I was following Tyler because he's a good friend of mine. And he was super successful because he knew how to program. And I had a choice to make. I could just be envious and jealous of my friend forever with all these projects he's doing, or I could learn from him. And so I made the decision to ask him to be my mentor. So he mentored me for like six months. And after that mentorship, he actually called me up and said, hey, do you want to work for Josh and I? And I said, dude, wherever you're at, I'm following. And so I just told myself I'd hitch my wagon to him. And that's been the greatest blessing of my life. But taking that step forward and asking someone to mentor you is how I got my job.
