Diagnosis stories - Endometriosis Video Transcripts

I was diagnosed with endometriosis the week before my wedding day. I actually had an operation to remove tissue from my bladder. I had been referred from my normal GP doctor from having symptoms similar to a urine infection. It was a bit of a shock to come round from the operation and be told you have a condition you've never heard of. I didn't get given any information or anything like that and then I used the Endometrius UK website and other websites to get more information. I was quite worried about being able to have children at this point and I was 29 years old, that's it really, so I went from there. I didn't have any problems for a while after that.

My diagnosis story is pretty similar to a lot of other women that I've talked to who have endometriosis. As a teenager, I always had very painful periods that were irregular. I was always put on birth control to help manage those and that did not help whatsoever. So it was kind of something that I dealt with. As I got into my mid to later 20s, they continuously got worse. I was getting a lot of pelvic pain. So in September of 2020, I started going to a couple different doctors and was told that there was nothing wrong with me, no issue. I finally, I think it was about my fifth doctor, saw someone who did some scans on me and saw that I had an endometriosis cyst on one of my ovaries that had to be removed via surgery.

My diagnosis with endometriosis was a little atypical. In December of 2015, I had a bowel obstruction. I was getting a laparoscopic surgery to remove the bowel obstruction, and they found endometriosis during the surgery, and then the pathology report confirmed that endometriosis did cause my bowel obstruction. So I had a precursor event that they were able to diagnose my endometriosis from, and I had no idea until after I heard the pathology report that that was what caused my bowel obstruction.
