Some of the most interesting facts in dermatology have to do with skin cancer, which is actually the most common type of cancer in the United States and worldwide. Fortunately, the majority of skin cancers are not life-threatening, but that being said, people do die from skin cancer, particularly melanoma, which is one of the more rare types of skin cancer, but does cause more than two people to die every hour of skin cancer in the United States. And the chance of getting skin cancer in the U.S. before the age of 70 is about 1 in every 5 Americans, so about 20% of Americans will have skin cancer at some point in their life, so something to be aware of. And fortunately, like I said, if detected early, it's often very treatable, and so a good reason that if you're at high risk with family history or a lot of sun exposure to get checked out and to make sure you're catching any skin cancer early.
