My name is Peter Barnes and I'm a dermatologist in the Air Force living in southern Mississippi at Keesler Air Force Base. My advice for getting started would be to find someone that you know who's a physician or if you're interested in dermatology a dermatologist and just ask them if you could shadow them at work for a day or a week. People are really used to this, you have to do it in order to get into medical school and just see what it's like day in day out to be a doctor or a dermatologist. I think that would give you the best perspective on what life is like and that would allow you to make a connection, ask them for more advice, but I would find someone that you know that you could spend some time with and get to see what a day in the life of a dermatologist is like in clinic and that would be a great starting spot.
