I think the best thing that somebody with depression can do is to go see their general physician and just they can do an evaluation, the doctor can do an evaluation and go over your symptoms and everything and then put together a treatment plan whether that be medicine or therapies or counseling. Your brain is is like a car battery and when it's out of juice it needs to be recharged and that's a slow process that takes time to get you feeling good again and your general physician can help you through that process, and it's a game-changer for people with depression to get that help, but that first step of calling the doctor and saying of the appointment that can be the hardest but and that takes courage and I'd encourage anyone with depression to do that.

One helpful tip I can suggest is if you're having trouble with motivation because of depression, just know that once you do something, once you start doing something, you're right usually. It's just getting yourself to do that. So if you can just, instead of sitting there thinking about it, just get up and do it and once you've started, you'll be all right. You're going, you're doing it.

One of the things that was really weighing me down and probably one of the biggest things that was keeping me locked down in a dark place around spring last year was the fact that I didn't want to feel like a burden to other people. So I wasn't reaching out to my close friends, my family, no one, because I just, it just kept running over and over my mind. I don't want to weigh them down with that. I don't want to weigh them down with that, but that is just so wrong. I think everyone should feel like they have, that they should be able to talk to someone. Don't ever feel like you're a burden because you deserve so much more than to feel that way. So please, please don't think that.

I served on the Oregon Eugene mission and while I was serving I learned that I have depression and before I knew that I turned to the adjusting to missionary life book a lot and something that ended up helping me the most was some things that the mission therapist suggested such as what's called mindfulness where you just kind of stop and you catalog what your senses are telling you like what you can hear what you can see smell taste something that helped me was closing my eyes and just not looking at what I could see so yeah that actually helped me a lot with my depression at first

Something that really helps me through depressive episodes is just remembering that depression is a medical condition and it doesn't define who I am or what I am and it's not going to control me for the rest of my life. It's something that causes ups and downs but you just need to take advantage of the ups and during the downs you just realize you know this isn't who I am and you think about the good times and know that things will get better.

There was a time in my life that I struggled with depression, but I think the helpful tip for depression is that just like go like out and like work out, just do like exercise. Like for me, it really helped me because going to gym and knowing like seeing my body changes every day and like I gained self-confidence from that and just doing something out there active like meeting new friends. I know it's very difficult, but just like doing those things really helped me with depression.

Everyone's experience with a mental health condition is different, and for the longest time I told myself that I didn't have depression because I was still active, I was still working hard at school, I wasn't just cooped up in bed all day, but I definitely still had depressive thoughts. And so some of those telltale signs that a lot of people talk about may not always be so obvious for some people that are dealing with depression and anxiety for that matter.

Find one thing to look forward to each day and find something that you feel good about doing and do that as well. Even if you don't feel like doing anything, just find one thing and do that one thing.

So one thing that I find useful with depression is when I'm in a state that's not so severe that it's completely debilitating. When I'm just, you know, I wake up and I just don't want to get up, I have no motivation at all. I'm just in a really bad space. Just one little thing I want to share is like telling someone you'll be there at a certain time or like having a goal set like with someone else or with something to so that you can have that motivation that you need to get there and that for me at least that helps me get out of bed some days. Like for today I ordered an on-campus meal for a certain time so I had to be there to pick it up at that certain time and so that really helped me. I hated getting up but I just got out of bed. I didn't look the greatest but I got there and I felt a lot better.
