At least when I was there, they thought it was amazing when anyone took any effort, any American took any effort to learn some of their language. I wouldn't say it's necessary to get by. I think a lot of tourist towns, a lot of people there know English, so you should be fine if you know English. They are very, like, very nationalistic. They love their country. They are very concerned with health, so if you do certain things that they don't deem as healthy, then they might freak out. I don't think that you necessarily need to be offended if they correct you on something, but, like, they don't want you to sit on concrete or stone without some form of cardboard underneath because they think if you do that you'll... I believe it was because you'll become sterile. I don't know.
