Why people quit - Composer Video Transcripts

Most incredible composers can come up with musical ideas quickly, therefore they feel that they're a composer. But to make that composition fit the film, fit the mood, fit the action, fit what the director wants, is hard sometimes. And it kind of maybe takes the fun out of it, I don't know. I love that part, trying to discern what the film and the director wants. But that's hard if you're not dedicated. And so people quit because it's hard. And a lot of times it's not very economically successful either, and you lose interest.

Why people quit. That's a tough one. I think a lot of times people just quit because it's not a particularly financially rewarding world to be in, unless you hit it big. But, you know, until that happens, sometimes it can just be hard to make ends meet. And you actually wind up having a, you know, a sort of a patchwork career where you're maybe, you know, composing your pieces, but you're also teaching on the side, or maybe you're, you know, directing a church choir or teaching, you know, kids or whatever. I mean, a lot of musicians have a bit of a sort of a freelance lifestyle. And that can be challenging for people. People don't, not everyone is into being an entrepreneur in a self, you know, a small business, right. And that's what you sort of need to do to to be a musician. So I mean, the, you know, the pressure is considerable.

I think the reason people quit is because of one of two reasons. One, in the beginning, it can be very difficult to make it as a composer because financially you'll need to do other things, at least in the beginning, especially if you don't have a lot of products and business sense or you're not trying to market and promote yourself. So if you're just creating and composing, that can be taxing. Another reason why I think people quit or stop is because they may receive rejection, which is very common. You may receive criticism. People may love you. They may hate you. Now, they're not really hating you, but they may like your music or they may dislike your music, and you need to understand it's okay. Just keep composing.

Why people quit. They don't believe in themselves. They don't believe in the process. They get some criticism and they think it's a reason to quit. They don't get as many views as they want to get and they maybe don't make as much money as they want to make. If you love it and you have something to say and you really want to say it, keep going. I have a friend who now makes really good money in the music business who didn't go into the music business for 15 or 20 years at the first start of his career because he didn't really believe that he could make it and then he finally just decided I'm doing music full-time and he did and it's been a wonderful experience for him. So I would just say keep the faith, stay courageous and keep going.
