The cons - Brigham Young University-Idaho Video Transcripts

The winter time, what makes it hard is that it snows a lot, and there's just not too much to do. Because in Rexburg, because it is a smaller town, you're already limited as to what you can and can't do, and so the winter does not really help that too much. But, at the end of the day, if you just find the right people, you can make it work. But it can just be really hard if you're going to BYU for the first time, and it's the winter semester, that definitely is a lot harder than the fall semester.

Biggest con of BYU-Idaho is the location, if I'm honest. The weather is so difficult in Ricksburg, Idaho in the winter, and most of the semesters that have the most people, so fall and winter semesters, have snow. And if you're not from somewhere with a lot of snow, it can be a little difficult learning to direct a class in the snow, but you'll get there. You can get over the snow if you need to, but that I would say is the biggest con that you'll deal with.

The only way you'll have a con is if you're not adaptable, and you're not willing to put faith forward to become a true disciple of Jesus Christ. That's it. You're either with Christ and it works, or you're the devil and it's all cons.

Don't get me wrong, I really like BOLU-Idaho, but one of the cons of the school... it honestly depends if this will actually apply to you. For some people it's just not very applicable, but for a lot of people, in the sciences especially, BOLU-Idaho is not a research school. They do not focus on research, they really don't do much research, and that is a con for a BOLU-Idaho. It is hard sometimes to find research in the university, because there's really not that much, and if a professor is doing it, it is kind of on his own time. And so that is one of the cons, is that they just don't have really any research to get yourself into, especially for those med students who need research to get into medical school. Really, sometimes a hard thing to find, and so that is one of the cons of BOLU-Idaho.

I wouldn't recommend BYU-Idaho to anyone who has trouble following rules. There are a lot of rules at BYU-Idaho that frankly people don't understand, well a lot of people don't understand, sometimes that I didn't understand, but I signed a paper saying that I would do it, that I would follow the honor code, and so that's why I did it. Concerning the the honor code, a lot of people like to, I felt, like to, what I like to call exalt the honor code, meaning that, you know, when I was there, you had to be in your apartment by midnight, and people were like, yeah, I covenanted to be in my apartment at midnight. I was like, I didn't do that, I said that I would, so I'll do it. That's something that I didn't love, but it's something you have to do, like, in order to stay in good standing with the university. Also, it's freezing cold, big get used to it. So yeah, those are probably what I wouldn't recommend about BYU-Idaho.

There are some cons about coming to BYU-Idaho. I think one of the biggest ones is the weather. It's the worst. It's cold and winter never ends. So make sure you dress warm and learn to love the snow because it will not go away.

At BYU-Idaho, there are a lot of things that are different from other colleges and other campuses and stuff, and a lot of those align with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and like their standards, so like there's no co-ed housing. They have like requirements where you get like recommendations from your bishopric and stuff, so you have to do all of that. But also some other cons I feel like are just like the environment, which I feel like a lot of people think is really good, and it is nice, but also like I feel like a lot of people are trying to like put on a mask and be like, oh I'm so great and wonderful when truly they may not be, so yeah.

I think the biggest con is just the location. Idaho is great but it is super cold. It gets cold in the winter. There's a lot of windy days and if you don't like that or if that's really difficult for you it could be kind of miserable. Another con is that it's a small town. Rexburg is not huge. There's not like a ton of options of things to do. There are great things on campus to and if you have the right friends you can always find entertaining things. But yeah, there isn't a lot going on in Rexburg and it does get super cold in the winter.

I think one of the biggest cons about going to BYU-Idaho is that it is a very small town. So if you grew up in a city, or even a medium-sized city, then going to BYU-Idaho is going to be a big shock because there's not a lot of things to do, especially after dark, unless you go to the dunes and do a bonfire or something.

The biggest con and the thing that students will complain about the most is the rules. Because BYU-Idaho is known as being the Brigham Young University with the most strict rules and that is true. So you need to consider that if you want to go to BYU-Idaho. Are you willing to live the rules? If not, just go to a different college. Hawaii is known as the most fun school with the least amount of rules and Provo is the second less strict school. So my advice would be if you're gonna go to the college, just live by the rules. It's not a big deal. They're really not that hard to follow. They might have changed even since I've been there. So that's good. That's the biggest con.

All right, the cons of BYU-Idaho. There weren't a lot. I really did enjoy my experience there. There are a lot of rules. I mean, it is kind of run a little bit like the military, not in a bad way, but like you can't chew gum in class, at least when I was there, which is fine. It's not like I'm addicted to chewing gum, but no hats, no sandals, which I can get, no facial hair, which at the time I couldn't really grow facial hair. That would be harder now because I like my beard. My wife likes my beard. And I had a roommate literally get sent to the dean because he had facial hair and got caught with it twice in a row. So a little strict. It's not for everyone. And if following a lot of rigid rules like that isn't your thing, it's probably not the best choice. But there's so many great things. And like the military, if you don't focus on the rules, but like focus on the experience and all the positive things, I think you come out with a lot better outlook towards it.

The biggest con I feel is that in the winter, around like November, December, the temperature totally drops, it snows, it ices, everything is freezing. So yeah, if you're not a fan of the cold and of ice and of maybe not, maybe you're not able to drive on the ice, I don't recommend coming up here because it makes it a pain for everyone that tries to drive or wants to drive or lives here. Yeah, come up here if you don't like the cold, but you do get used to it. And if you're walking, just make sure that you're, you know, walking safe because it is slip slippery. I would say that's the biggest con. The school's awesome. I love it.
