I spent a lot of time in an organization called Student Support, which is now divided into student activities and student success, which is like the mentoring programs. And so they helped with a lot of the activities at the school, of course, and including Get Connected and iNight, which are designed for the freshmen to get acquainted with others, especially those they live nearby, and also to have a mentor to support them. There are other opportunities for being a mentor or getting a mentor. One of them that I was in was also called Heber J. Grant Mentoring, and that one focuses more on goals and weekly check-ins and stuff, and just having somebody to cheer you on throughout all those things. There's a lot more that they do. I was also with an organization called Visit Day Ambassadors. I don't know if it's still called that, but they would do tours for the school for admitted students. It was pretty fun.

The biggest one that comes to mind is a department called ISERV. ISERV is wonderful and it's for all students and families of any age, and they just go there a certain day and time and they go and they serve. There's a certain day of the week where they go and help people with special needs and disabilities, and then there's other days where they go and help homeless shelters, animal shelters, and just the community around. I've seen them do elementary schools, high schools, and they do a variety of tasks. Another service opportunity would be the Blue Crew, and Blue Crew can help set up events, dances that happen around, or just other departments where they can't fill in the blanks with volunteers, and you are the person that they call and help and that they rely on. There's other opportunities as well, many different councils, and you should look into it because it's so fun to get involved at BYU-Idaho.

I know that in the beginning of the school year, at least for me when I was doing my freshman orientation, they did this really big service project which I thought was super cool. You just showed up with a bunch of other freshmen and maybe made like kits and stuff. Great way to meet some other freshmen that were my age and it didn't take long at all so that was pretty cool.

Service opportunities are available on campus. There are even some that are organized so that you can join a group and go visit elderly people who are in nursing homes around the area. That's one opportunity. I think there was even adopt a grandparent for a while. That was an initiative where you could stay in contact with that one person. There are other service opportunities that are done through YSA wards or family wards if you're an older student like myself. There's no end to how you can help somebody else on campus. I mean, respectfully, if they accept your help, let's put it that way. Even volunteering for things like the Discipleship Convention, the DLC, Disciple Leadership Convention. There are other things for which you can volunteer as well. You can call it service too. Tons.

There are so many service opportunities at BYU-Idaho. You can literally just walk around and smile at people because people walk around everywhere. Something that me and one of my roommates did, it was like Christmas time? Maybe it was before Christmas time. We basically just walked around and handed people candy out of a bag. It might have been weird, but we were like, we're doing random acts of kindness and here's a bag of candy, like reach in and pull out one if you want one. They were individually wrapped. It was also before COVID. It was like in 2018 when we walked around and did this. So germs weren't really a problem. Plus things were individually wrapped. So I definitely recommend if you want to do service opportunities, just get creative, follow the spirit, and you'll be able to help someone.

There are tons of service opportunities here on campus. I do know one that's really fun on Wednesday or Thursday nights in the Hinckley building. They have adults with special needs or disabilities come and they do crafts or music or physical activities in the gym and you can just go and have fun and it's a great way to get service hours if that's something that's required but also just meet a lot of really cool people in your area.

Plenty of service opportunities posted on any campus building, but the best thing is whenever you find and create the ones yourselves, when you create them yourselves that means you are actively engaged in doing the will of the Father.

I think one of the greatest service opportunities up here at BYU-Idaho, as well as just in the surrounding area, is just to get to know people. To smile at them, wave at them, give them a reason to have a good day, you know. And I think that's a resource that's really been exhausted with COVID and things that have been going on. People stay away from each other. But yeah, if you can walk around campus and smile at people, help people with their books, help people open doors, make an opportunity and an environment in which they want to be, I think that's a service that BYU-Idaho needs more of. And that's something that you can help with. That's something I can help with. It's what God would want us to do. And we feel good doing it.
