Council called Student Connections, where our whole goal was to connect students with community, culture, and Christ. And we did that by taking a volunteer out every day, a different volunteer, and getting on our knees and praying to God to send us to somebody who needed us that day. And so my particular volunteer that day, we had gone a few times and he had expressed to me that he hadn't felt loved or acknowledged by God, that he kind of knew that he existed. And he was a recent convert of the church too, and he didn't really feel like he had the capacity to go love and to go and serve. And so I watched him through that semester as he grew and shared his testimony to people. And I saw something click in his mind as he helped these strangers, as they cried and told us their life worries, saying, we're valued of God. I saw something click in his mind, like I'm valued too. And that was so beautiful.

So my freshman year at Ricks slash BYU-Idaho, I lived in Rigby Hall, which was on-campus housing at the time, and on our floor there was a guy who was not a member of the church. And why he ended up in Rexburg, Idaho, I'm not exactly sure, but anyway, fun guy, and we just kind of included him in all of our activities and, you know, did stuff. It was just, you know, didn't seem like that big a deal. And then the second semester, he came into my room with my roommate. We were buddies from high school, so we knew each other before we came down there. And he said, hey, I'd like you guys to come to my baptism. And he turned to me and asked me if I would speak. And we were kind of looking at each other and it's like, dude, we have not been the best examples of the way the gospel is supposed to be. And he said something that I think is very impactful. He said, yeah, but you didn't treat me any different.

So once upon a time I was having a rough time in school and I was coming upon my off track and so the way I thought to get past it was to make a big old list of all the things I should be doing and start making a habit of doing all of them. But then conference rolled around and President Nelson made a lot of invitations to us and I was just like, how can I add these things in? There's already so many things I need to do that I'm not doing as great as I would like and I can't add more things on top of that. And so I made a decision that I was like, maybe the rest of that list doesn't matter. And I focused in on the things President Nelson asked us to do. And when I did that, some of the other things started happening too. And I came back to school and started having the best grades of my time there and started taking care of myself in all the ways and it was awesome.

This is a quick story from a devotional when Elder Bednar came my freshman year of college and he spoke very directly to us and it was a very very powerful testimony and direction for us as BYU-Idaho students to be grateful and hard-working and humble that we are students here because the amount of people's money and tithing dollars that come in to allow us to have this education and to have this opportunity is from people who will never experience anything close to like what we get to and that was really powerful the spirit that filled the eye center hearing from an apostle and the change that I saw on campus was incredible by all of us taking into his his advice.
