Housing recommendations - Brigham Young University-Idaho Video Transcripts

Hey, so in Rexburg you really can't go wrong, um, with housing, honestly. Sometimes people like to make it garbage, um, to, I don't know, I guess maybe it's human nature to want to make groups and divisions and stuff, but just know they aren't true. Like, I lived at a couple of the places that people would like, like hear bad things about, and it just wasn't true. I'd be like, no, I live there, and that's not true. They would be like, oh, I hear they throw these crazy parties late into the night. I'm like, no, they have a lounge. I've used it several times. We had, like, service parties and stuff, or relief society parties. Like, sometimes they have other parties and they play music and stuff, but it's far away enough from the rooms and like, but nothing bad is ever happening, like, because everyone can walk by them. Like, it's like right by the stairs and stuff, so it's like, anyway, it's not true.

Do not worry so much about price. Find the right people, find the right place for where your classes are, and you will be able to have a good home.

One of the things I learned, because I lived a lot of different places at BYU-Idaho, beyond you really can't go wrong, is that I did notice that the more expensive places I lived, all the places I lived were very affordable, but the more expensive places I lived were not necessarily better quality than the cheaper places I lived. Although I will say that if air conditioning is important to you in the summer, it is worth it. Even if it doesn't have air conditioning, but ones that the hallways are indoors. But I will say that the ones where the hallways, there are not indoor hallways, the door leads straight to the outdoors, they're often very friendly apartment complexes. People will like hammock right outside their doors and things like that.

I would highly recommend going to a more social atmosphere for your college experience, because if you limit yourself to those single room apartment complexes, your roommates aren't going to talk to you, because most of those people also just want to do their own thing or gone all the time, and it's going to be very difficult to build those connections. When you have social roommates, they'll bring the socialization to you, and when you don't want to participate, you can just go to your room, but for housing, for social places would be Somerset would be a great one, and Nauvoo, if you don't really mind not having the nicest apartments, but for really nice apartments, a good one would be Cedars, Center Square, which is generally for freshmen, The Landing's really great, Towers, and The Gates are pretty great for socialization.

Try to find an apartment complex that is close to where most of your classes will be. And also make sure you're somewhere where you kind of know the record of the place. For example, North Point is not a great one to live at because it's a lot of students get into a lot of trouble whereas Center Square is really nice. It can get loud at certain parts of the year, but it's super clean and pretty affordable compared to a lot of the other ones as well.

If you're going to be in an apartment with six or more people, which you most likely will be because it's BYU-Idaho and you have to live in apartments unless you're married, make sure there's two fridges or bring your own mini fridge. Otherwise, it's going to be a nightmare the entire semester trying to fit all your food.

You really can't go wrong with housing at BYU-Idaho. There's a lot of really great places and a lot of really great prices and a lot of really great people living everywhere. So, I think something I would recommend is having two fridges is really nice. About half my time here I've had apartments with one fridge and the other half has been with two fridges and it works with one, but having two is really, really nice. It makes a really big difference when you have really great management and everywhere that I've lived and worked, I've worked at a couple, well I've worked at an apartment complex here and everyone is very on top of, BYUI is very on top of their housing department and making sure that that housing is up to standard and safe and good quality to live in.

I'm going to go against the grain here because throughout my years at BYU-Idaho, many students were telling me that Center Square was one of the worst places where somebody could stay, probably because they were forced to stay there and it was their first year. Now, when I made it to Center Square, it was my last semester on campus, and my first reaction after being there a week was, why didn't I come here earlier? For me, it was perfect. It was a place that focused on the Spirit, the staff was awesome, and even the YSA ward, the bishop, someone I knew beforehand by coincidence, but the YSA ward was awesome as well. My roommates were possibly the best roommates I've had. I cannot go enough in saying how Center Square was excellent. There are other places that are great too, like Nauvoo House, but for me, the one that took the cake was Center Square.

When you first move into an apartment, claim kitchen space first, because especially when you have a lot of people there, there's not really enough cabinets, but make sure you do it fairly and there's enough space for other people to have their stuff, but get your kitchen stuff in there first and then work on your room. Your room is already claimed.
