Crazy stories - Brigham Young University-Idaho Video Transcripts

There was one winter that I was at BYU-Idaho and we had a couple of days where we had windchill of almost negative 40 degrees and I am from Arizona, central Arizona, so I'm not south and it's not really hot where I'm from, but negative 40 degrees with windchill was very cold for me and I was expecting class to be canceled but it was not and I lived about a block from campus which is pretty close for most people, but I had to walk to campus in almost negative 40 degree weather and that is very dangerous and very difficult, so if that happens, make sure you wrap yourself real tight, but you're still gonna have to go to class when it's in the negatives with windchill, so just make sure to be careful. I think that's pretty crazy that that happens, but it's not uncommon in Idaho, so be prepared for that.

The craziest story I can think about with BYU-Idaho involved a test that I was writing in the third semester in a row in my first year. So I was pushing myself to the limit, and during the test I felt my brain slow down. I thought, uh-oh, here we go, this is a burnout, which I'd experienced before. I did a quick prayer. I told Heavenly Father, listen, if you want me to continue forward in this program, you got to take the wheel right now, and wrapped it up, said amen, and soon I saw a question on the test that I did not understand whatsoever, and then an answer popped into my head which I didn't understand either, and I said this makes no sense, and the prompting I got was write it down. When I got my test copy back corrected, the question was perfectly right. I wouldn't recommend this to everybody, but this was a pretty crazy situation for me, which I proved to me that if you stay worthy, the Spirit is going to accompany you.

I think it's just funny because most people that I know probably know somebody who got married really fast at BYU-Idaho, so it does happen sometimes, but I think most of the time it works out for those people. I guess it's good to know that the statistics are not terribly unlike the rest of the world. Divorces are about the same, so just be careful, like be really mindful about your choices, obviously, and like I know people are with a marriage, but the person I think of when I think of people that got married really fast, they are awesome, and it's definitely one of those where I'm like, I get it for them. I wouldn't recommend that to anybody ever, but I get it for them, and like somehow that just works, and I'm glad it worked. So good for you guys. They have like two kids now or something, three, they have three, and I've babysat for them.

Okay, you're gonna find this on any campus, I'm sure, but I know BYUiDU is a nickname and it's a nickname for a reason. Lots of people there are looking to make connections of a serious kind. So as a freshman, what you should watch out for is talkers and just keep in mind that you don't have to say yes to every date. But also, if you do say yes to most dates, you're gonna have a lot more fun. But go into this experience not being too scared about making a serious commitment because hello, you're like what 18, 19? You're there to have fun, right? You're not there to get married. So go have fun and go out on dates with the mindset that you're just gonna meet somebody new and have a great time and watch out for people who are clingy and crazy because that can definitely happen.

So I started off as a civil engineer major, but then I realized I didn't like it that much, but the math faculty, because you know as an engineer you need to take some math classes, the math faculty were like angels, they were amazing, they really took care of you, and I realized I liked math a little bit too much, a lot more than engineering, and so I switched to math, and it was just like a really smooth transition, and it was, like I, like I never thought you know the math faculty would be so awesome, and I never thought I would ever become a math major, and so yeah that was, that's kind of a crazy story for me I guess.
