Campus traditions - Brigham Young University-Idaho Video Transcripts

So a really cool campus tradition that, well, BYU-Idaho has a lot of really cool traditions. That's just kind of why BYU-Idaho is a lot different compared to other schools. That's why it's different from BYU-Provo especially. They hold themselves to a higher standard. There's something called the spirit of Ricks. They feel that there's a special spirit in that town and you'll feel it when it's there. It is a special place. That's why they feel to hold themselves to a higher standard compared to other places. I don't know, they just feel like they're better than other people per se, but that they have the special spirit that they don't want to leave. That's why, for example, they'll be a little more strict with the kind of pants you wear. You don't wear shorts. You wear long pants. They're a little strict on things like that. Or like BYU-Idaho, they still have a curfew. A lot of the reasons why they're there is because they feel they have a special spirit there. They want to keep it distinct and different from other universities.

Another really cool tradition at Yoyo Idaho, you'll see it at devotional every week you go. So again, it has to tie with this like spirit of ritz thing that they have there, but the cool thing is that when you're at devotional and the person's directing devotional and everything, before they proceed with the program, the person directing will say something along the lines of, you know, as a tradition, we invite all attending to raise any notebooks, notepads, journals, phones, Chromebooks, whatever, to show the speaker that we are ready to be taught, and then we all raise them at the same time. It's actually really cool because you're like, okay, we're all ready. I remember the first time I did it, I was like, man, this is really neat. I really like that. And so just a really cool tradition there.

Every year there's a Christmas lighting. They do it like, I think a few months or maybe one month before Christmas and that's really fun. They have like this really big show. They have usually food, they usually have hot chocolate and it's just really fun, a really good experience. I didn't get to go until one of my last semesters, so definitely try to go early on. It's actually really fun.

The best campus traditions, I would say, are the iCenter dance parties. I loved going to Zumba, the, I can't remember what it's called, but like when you're an incoming freshman and you get to meet all the other new freshmen, you go and do activities. It seems really cheesy, but it is the best way to meet friends. It's actually how I met my husband. Years later, we ended up staying friends and getting married, and all of my friends from that first semester are still my closest ones.

One campus tradition that I can think of is what they do at country dancing on campus to celebrate one's birthday is that whoever's birthday it is they get to dance with either a bunch of bunch of guys or bunch of girls just you know to celebrate their birthday and I've had the opportunity to do that myself and it is a lot of fun.

I don't know if this can be considered a tradition, but one of the things that happens every semester is there are business students that one of their requirements is to create their own student-run business. So there's businesses all over campus every semester and it's really cool. Most of them will sell like a food product or maybe some kind of jewelry or chapstick or something like that, just small little items, and I always love supporting these student businesses because not only does it support the students, but they also sell some really cool stuff, some really yummy food. I've bought some jewelry from some of them. I would just recommend supporting these students because I think it's a really cool thing that BYU-Idaho does for these business students to give them the opportunity to see what it's like to start up and run this business. Some of the businesses end up sticking around past that one semester and I think that's really really cool. So if you have the opportunity, if you have a little bit of extra money to support these student businesses, you should because I think it's so cool that BYU-Idaho does this and that we get to support each other and to buy some cool stuff from each other.

So during the holiday season, they do a gigantic Christmas light situation up at the Taylor Quad with donuts and hot chocolate. That's a pretty fun thing to do every year.

Well, a weekly tradition that I loved is devotionals every Tuesday at the time that I was at university. And the special devotionals that would have an apostle or another area authority or general authority would sometimes even have an ice cream social afterwards, which was kind of neat. One that I enjoyed that would happen at the beginning of every semester would be I-Night, where you had all these activities going on around the student center, the several buildings, let's say, on campus where you could do anything from wall climbing to roller skating to mini golf to all these excellent activities. The food court is open for Chick-fil-A, I think. And anyway, great times every semester from what I can recall.

Every Sunday, sometime between 8 and 9, they sing hymns under the football stadium bleachers. And the reason for that is because the acoustics are really loud and it sounds really cool. It's a great spiritual experience to have if you need some things to do at BYUI. I also, I've met some great people from doing it every week. But yeah, that's something I would recommend.

There is singing underneath the bleachers up at the field and they do it by apartments and it's so much fun. You go up there and you sing and they do it in different languages too so if you served your mission somewhere where you spoke a different language try to get connected with somebody who served your mission at the same time or spoke the same language on their mission or is just from a different country because you can go and you can go sing hymns underneath the bleachers. I think it was on Sunday nights but I can't remember but it was so much fun and I got to meet so many new people.

So something I like doing that has become a tradition at BYU-Idaho is every Sunday they have stadium singing. Sometimes it's under the bleachers in the stadium but in the winter it gets a little too cold for that so they have it in the eye center under those stairs. Just a big group of people and it echoes and it sounds amazing. So take a friend, go on a date, it's a really fun time.

My favorite campus tradition is stadium singing on Sunday nights, where they sing hymns underneath the stadium.

One of the things I miss most about being a student is devotionals and just being able to go with your friends or alone even sometimes, and just have that time to kind of ponder and think about kind of what you're becoming, kind of what your studies and stuff are making of you. I don't know, and kind of have that check in with yourself in addition to like church and stuff. But I think it's so cool because it's like as a university you guys are all uniting, like literally no campus employees can work during that time, like everything shuts down. And I don't know, I just think that's really cool. There are no classes, like everyone is there together as long as they choose to be. And that's just so cool that you get to have that time together and you know your friends will be free, and it's just such a nice break during the week.

So if it's your first semester up here and you're a freshman, they do have a get connected, which is where you'll just make a lot of friends and you'll get to do a lot of activities with a lot of other people. And you will have people over you, I guess, and they can give you advice and things like that if you want more one-on-one advice. But also, whether it's your first semester or not, they do normally, I don't know about with COVID and stuff, but they normally have a first Friday and that is when a lot of local companies and stuff and organizations will come together and set up a little section near campus. And they have a lot of fun things that are for free and you can just enjoy it with a lot of other friends and stuff.

If you go underneath the bleachers every Sunday night, they sing hymns for about an hour. There's like a Spanish session for an hour and then an English session for an hour and it's absolutely lovely and I definitely highly recommend if you're a freshman going to the orientation and the Get Connected because it's a lot of fun. I think there's like a talent show, you get to meet your team leaders, basically your mentors, those who are going to walk you through the first months of school and it's a great experience. I love my mentors and I met them in 2018, it's 2021 and I'm still great friends with them and they're already graduated but they still reach out to me so highly recommend, love BYU-Idaho and the traditions.

One of my favorite campus traditions is the cultural night. It happens almost every semester, sometimes they skip spring, but it's all of the cultures from all of the students around the world that are here at BYU-Idaho and they represent their culture and it just brings us so close together. The spirit's so strong. It's an amazing event, highly recommend it.

As far as campus traditions, the ones that I started and most of the apartments started as well is just you take yourself and a friend and start crashing into other apartments to make new friends. It usually helps you to get more friends and have more exciting times.
