The pros - Brigham Young University Video Transcripts

I think one of the best pros about BYU is the quality of the education there. The education is phenomenal. I ended up doing my doctorate out of state after and I was well prepared. There were a lot of people in my class that were not nearly as prepared and I was extremely surprised about how well BYU actually prepped me for further education. And so I'd say the education that you get for the price honestly is one of the top qualities for BYU.

One of my favorite things about going to BYU is the spiritual environment. I love that we're able to learn, not only learn subjects and prepare for a future career, but we're also able to use religion, and wow, we're learning secular things as well. So I love the spirit and the environment here.

People at BYU, a lot of times students don't even recognize what they have. I remember talking to my friends from back home in Boston, and we would talk about our experiences and how there was all this social stuff that I was doing, and I was going on dates. And while my friends would laugh sometimes that that sounded like something that was antiquated, in the end, they became very jealous of how little BYU cost, the education that I was getting, and how I was able to move forward. And then also, even some of the training I was getting in adult life, and potentially meeting people to date. Other schools just didn't, couldn't really compete with that. I think BYU is just, there's really a lot of pros there.

So one of the big pros of BYU is there's such a high concentration of members of the church that are your age that it doesn't matter what you like to do. You can find your niche of people who also like to do that. They're also like faithful members of the church, which is really nice. Like I like to skateboard a lot, so I have a group of friends that I skate with. I like to play music. I have a group of friends that I play music with. And it doesn't matter if you're into video games, if you're into sports, whatever it is.

I think one of the pros of BYU is that it is more affordable than the other colleges in Utah and out of state. I think also just it being part of the church education system is a pro because we learn from professors who have strong testimonies of Jesus Christ and they really integrate that with the course material. I think it's such a wonderful thing and it really it's cool that it's already spirituality is really tied into the classes because it just creates a more balanced life for the students.

Okay, the pros of BYU are that it's super close, everyone here is friendly, it's centered on Christ, you can literally walk anywhere, the games are awesome, the rock is awesome, and they always have fun activities here to do on campus.

I think the biggest pro is the quality of education. It is a remarkable school. My college was the College of Communications, Public Relations and Broadcast News, and it equipped me well for the rest of my life. I was a stay-at-home mother after college, but during that time I worked for newspapers, I freelanced, I'm now a full-time author, and I do my own marketing because of my public relations and broadcast news, and it's just remarkable the education I got from BYU. So that to me is the biggest pro, is the education if you work hard.

I think the biggest pro in my opinion is it's filled with just really good, clean, fun, productive people. The students are abiding by an honor code, so they're chaste, they don't swear, I'm speaking in general. There's always exceptions where people do bad stuff, but as a whole the people are wonderful. There's a lot of return missionaries, there's tons of social activities. BYU is relatively cheap, especially if you're a member of the church, it's also quite safe. BYU has incredible music and dance programs, it has a great entrepreneurship program, lots of startups come out of BYU, lots of job opportunities, it's awesome. And BYU is a great place to find your future spouse. It was for me and it is for tens of thousands of people.

I think the first thing is the tuition is really cheap and then the education quality is so nice. All professors, they're really nice. I think Provo area is really safe. So I lived at another state. I did not go outside like after 6 p.m. It's so dangerous, but here it's really safe. But be careful always.

There are a lot of pros to going to BYU, but the biggest one for me is the integration of spirituality and secular learning. One of the aims of BYU is to be spiritually strengthening, so every class ties back to what we're learning to the gospel in some way or another, and I think that's a really beautiful thing and something that you don't get at a lot of universities. There are some Christian universities that do that, but like we even have devotionals set aside every Tuesday at 11, and there can't be any classes that run over it, and it's just a really cool environment because of it.

BYU does an incredible job of preparing their students for the real world. I'm a global supply chain student in the Marriott School and the professors and the other people there have done an incredible job of preparing me for the real world. BYU is an incredibly competitive place to be if you are looking for a job after you graduate, which is what most people are looking for. I am going to be interning at Walmart this summer and Walmart first recruits from the University of Arkansas and then they recruit from BYU and then they recruit from the Ivy Leagues. So if you're a business student, I would say that it's an incredibly, an incredible opportunity to get a job, a very competitive job, and you could be at your internship and sitting next to people who are at Harvard, at Stanford, and you were recruited before them.

One thing that I love about BYU and I definitely consider a pro is the way that, I mean, pretty much every single class starts off with a prayer. And it's something that I've never experienced in schooling before. When I talk with friends at other universities, they don't really get that pleasure. You know, I took this one lecture series class where a lot of non-members members came in to speak to us, but we always would start off with a prayer, invite the spirit to be with us. I mean, a lot of times people ask for help in their studies and everything, and I definitely can feel like the Lord's hand in the classes. And so that's something very unique and definitely something I consider a pro.

You're just surrounded by a lot of, I think, professors who really want to see you succeed. So definitely take advantage of that. I've talked to several professors who really just wanted students to come to their office hours. And at first, it's going to seem like you're a burn to them. But there are some classes where I didn't do that. I didn't go to their office hours. And afterwards, they commented like, you know, I wish that I'd seen you in my office hours. Just know that professors really are looking out for you and that this is a great community. They're not going to chastise you for being quiet. They're not going to chastise you for asking a simple question. There are no dumb questions when it comes to asking professors for help.

BYU is pretty much the best at everything. Sports, academics, we have like the number two accounting program, we have like the number two business school, we have so many good programs, we have like one of the best engineering programs I know, but a lot of really good programs. BYU is also really good because all of the academic subjects are taught with the spirit and I love that and I love that you can feel the spirit during class and that my professors will just whip out quotes from the apostles and from our prophet president Russell M. Nelson. I love that, it's so awesome. BYU is such a spiritual place, I wouldn't replace it for anything else.

Something that I do love about BYU is they have probably one of the best professors that I've ever met, especially in regards to religion professors. They really care about their job, they care about their students, they care about their student salvation, they care about just how you are as an individual. They really want to make you feel loved and it's a nice break, you can go from your classes to class and then all of a sudden you'll have New Testament and there will be a teacher and a professor saying, I'm rooting for you, I'm cheering you on, here's a free A and it's the best.
Video 16 Transcript
I kind of put this in the con section too but one of the pros is just like having so many people that feel similarly to you as far as beliefs and kind of goals in life and it makes it really easy it makes it easier to stay on track with those and to kind of make sure that you have good friends who are helping you and who want to study and who want to have a future and a career and all kinds of those things and the professors are also super nice and very helpful and really do want to get to know you and I've really appreciated that with my time at BYU.
Video 17 Transcript
The biggest pro that I can think of for the most part is that the professors are awesome, generally. Not all of them, obviously. But for the most part, the professors actually care about their students. They want their students to succeed. They want you to do well. They don't just see you as a number or another student to ask them questions and annoy them. Obviously, this depends on the professor, but the majority of the professors that I had were great. And in high school and in other schooling opportunities, that was definitely not the case. For the most part, my teachers were not that good. And so coming to BYU and having professors that I thought that the majority of them were awesome is just a wonderful pro. Absolutely amazing.

Besides BYU having a lot of great professors and a lot of really cool classes and cool people, I feel like the best thing about BYU for me was just where it's located. There's a lot of really cool things to do outdoors in Provo and the surrounding areas and just in Utah in general. And so being able to explore and just have fun with my roommates and even go to downtown Provo and go to Velour, which is a music venue, just being able to explore the surrounding areas was one of the funnest things for me personally. So I really think that BYU is a great affordable school, but the surrounding area is so beautiful and really makes it worth it.

For me, one of the biggest pros about learning up here at BYU-Provo is the way that your professors teach really strong, more academic material, but they also tie in spiritual truth and eternal principles from the faith side of things. So they tie both of those things together and it's a really amazing opportunity to be able to experience that while you're being pushed academically. You can also be pushed spiritually and grow both in faith and your academic abilities.

Some pros about BYU is that the education is top-notch. It's really preparing you for the real world and you're learning things that apply to everyday life, not just your education.

I love that BYU has a connection to logic and the things of logic and also the things of the spirit and that in the classroom it's possible to have both of those going on at the same time. Obviously I've never been in a school environment where I pray before a class or where quotes from apostles and prophets or scriptures are included throughout the lesson or we debate different academic things along with spiritual things but I've absolutely loved it at BYU and even my husband who goes to different universities like wow that's super cool that that you're kind of able to have that kind of open discussion about about spiritual matters at at the university because of the environment that we're in. So I love it. I think it's great.

One of the pros of BYU, in my opinion, is the campus. Like, it is beautiful and all the buildings are really nice and I loved being able to walk to and from class. Except everything, it always felt like I was walking uphill. But once I got up on campus, like, it's always so pretty and really clean, which is really nice.

One of the pros to going at BYU is their mission aims are so focused on helping you in your career and also in your spiritual wellness. So in classes we start every class with a prayer. Your professors are really focused on your well-being and so I think that is definitely a pro of coming to BYU is you're getting fed educationally and spiritually as well.
Video 24 Transcript
One pro of going to BYU is that our semesters are shorter lengths than most universities. So, for instance, our winter semester starts in January and we get out of classes in the middle of April, so we have a four-month-long summer, which is really nice. There's also kind of a con because we don't get a spring break, but it's nice to be able to finish up classes early and there's lots of time if you want to work in the summer or do internships or study abroad. There's plenty of time in the summer to do that.
Video 25 Transcript
One of the pros at BYU is the people. I met my best lifelong friends at BYU. You know, when I went through high school, I had some friends, but not, you know, those that were going to stick with me through the rest of my life. But now I have found a group of people that I know, like, we're going to be showing up at each other's funerals. So find that group of friends. There are incredible people from, with all different sorts of experiences behind them. Go find those people, learn from them, and you will walk away with family at the end of the day.
Video 26 Transcript
The best pro about BYU is not that it has good tuition or even good academics. I feel like because we're so spiritually minded and centered with all the teachers and students, faculty, it's just the greatest way to facilitate educational success in a spiritual setting. So keep in mind if you're looking to go to BYU, don't do it really for the cheap tuition or even just the academic program. Honestly, you'll find those everywhere, but what truly matters is how we are spiritually prepared to succeed secularly.

There are a lot of pros of BYU. One of my favorite pros, I think, honestly, I think, is the diversity in the aspect of people, I think, serving missions. It's a university, I think, has a unique view on life just because of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Another pro that I like is it's an area that is very unique to the world. We have a high concentration of young single adults around your same age who have a lot of the same kind of priorities and, I think, standards, and that, I think, is something that's very unheard of in today's world, especially at the university, secondary school level. The other thing, I think, is people, the opportunity to be able to meet people from all walks of life and be able to make fresh handshakes with people, like Exhibit A. Stay thirsty, my friends.
Video 28 Transcript
A pro is that we get to talk about our beliefs in class and your professors have the same beliefs as you and so there's a lot more connections and ties.
