So while I was at BYU, probably one of my favorite experiences that I had was going on a study abroad to Vienna, Austria in 2019, and it was through the School of Music. So one of the School of Music professors led the study abroad, but the fun thing about that study abroad was the majority of the students on it weren't actually music students. So the classes offered were a general ed class and then a German culture and language class, really like an Austrian culture class, and then there were a couple other classes that you could take as well, but all of them applied toward generals and just to electives. So it was a really fun time, really loved Vienna. It was super close to every other city in Europe, super cheap to get to. I was only there for two months, but I ended up visiting five countries, six countries, just on my own because we were so close to everything. So definitely consider a study abroad. Europe was awesome, Vienna was awesome. I could talk all about that, but my study abroad was the highlight of my college experience and I would definitely recommend it.

A study abroad program that I would suggest is one that I found recently which is a business study abroad and I thought it was very interesting because you get to go like to multiple different Asian countries like Japan, Mongolia, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Vietnam and there's many other ones as well and you get to go to like very well-known companies like Sony and I thought it it definitely would be a very good experience for people who are interested in business and going to Asia in general.

I haven't been on a study abroad program personally, but I actually teach French 101 at BYU, so I have like, I've advertised for it basically before. But there's a lot of different things you can do with study abroad. You can go, even if you don't like speak the language very well, there's study abroads for people that aren't quite familiar with the language yet. They can learn the language in the country and also do like other cultural classes that will fulfill like general electives while you're doing a study abroad. If not, I also know that there's other, again like if you have like a major in another language, that'll help you with a lot of like the major classes in the program that you're like trying to study basically. So yeah, that's a little bit on study abroad. Oh also, if your study abroad like is, I mean if it's a language program, it's probably going to be through the Humanities College on BYU campus and they actually give out like grants for people. So you could go for like really cheaper and not even pay that much.

I never actually studied abroad here, but I did visit Israel for my senior trip before I went to BYU. And the Jerusalem Center is gorgeous. And the place there is just, everything about Jerusalem and the Jerusalem Center is amazing. I toured it, it's super sick. If you can, definitely do it. It is super cool.

A lot of people haven't heard about this, but there's a program called ILP. It's like International Language Program. It's like associated with BYU, but it's not run through BYU, so you have to take a semester off for it, but you get to go to other countries and teach kids languages or teach kids English for a semester and it's super cheap. Like I'm going to Thailand in a few months for $2,000 and all my expenses are covered, so that's one thing I'd highly recommend.

So this study abroad program, I was just introduced to it last week in one of my global supply chain management class. The professor, he's going to London for, and obviously the invitation's for anyone who wants to go. Yeah, but he's going to London for a few months, I think just about a semester's worth. And I believe the classes that you take, you take like an accounting class, a marketing class, and a global supply chain class, but it's for those who aren't in the Marriott School of Business yet. So if I hadn't already taken those classes, it'd be really cool to go to London, take a few classes and not too hard, not classes that aren't too hard as well. And just experience what it's like in London, because that's always been a dream of mine.

I just got back from a study abroad in London. It was from September to December and I could not recommend it enough. I had the best experience. I loved my whole group. There was 41 of us. Even though we are all different, different majors, different hometowns and everything, we had different interests. We just connected so much because we were all in this new place together and we were exploring and we got to see so much culture and just like it was a really beautiful experience and it taught me a lot about myself and also about another place. It was really fun. I highly recommend.

I have not personally gone on a study abroad, but I have friends who have, and I've seen lots of things throughout my department's information that's talked about them. So just be on the lookout from your department, or if you don't see anything coming out necessarily, you can always reach out to people. If you search up on Google, like BYU study abroad programs, there's a bunch of websites you can find. Honestly, you just have to look for it. There's also grants that you can apply to, whether that's through BYU experiential learning, which you can look up, BYU grants, and you can get the study abroad paid for if you can afford it, and if you write a compelling enough grant application. So, don't be afraid to apply to a study abroad program, even if you can't afford it, because there are ways to help you get the money.

So BYU operates their study abroad program through the Kennedy Center. So one of the best ways to find study abroads is to go on the website, go look at the Kennedy Center, and they have study abroads divided basically by subject. So you can choose one according to whatever you're studying or whatever you want to do. They also have them divided by location, so if you have a specific place you're thinking you want to do a study abroad, you can take a look there too. They have tons of different options for all kinds of subjects and all kinds of places. I definitely would recommend one. I had the opportunity to do one, and not only was it super fun to do some learning off campus, it also gave me a lot of the skills and learning that I needed to get into my graduate program, for example. And so definitely 10 out of 10 would recommend doing one, just both to gain a new perspective on a new place and also to prepare yourself for future careers and stuff like that.

So BYU has a lot of great study abroad programs. Obviously with COVID-19, some countries a little more shut down make it harder to do more programs, but if you're watching it, watching this video after that whole pandemic phase, you'll have a lot of opportunities. The Merritt School of Business, for example, this past winter and fall semester, I've been promoting a European study abroad, or Europe study abroad, and so that's a great opportunity. The Kennedy Center, the international center on campus, also is offering scholarships and things like that to do study abroad programs. So just go look on your resources online. The Kennedy Center is a great place to start. Look into your department. If they have any opportunities, talk to your counselor in your department and they'll talk about any study abroad opportunities.

In June of 2025 to August, I did the Modern Spain study abroad. It's a six-week study abroad. I did it with the humanities department with Professor Robert Colson. It was the greatest experience of my life. We went, we started in Madrid and we traveled all over Spain. We went to cities like Sevilla, Toledo, Granada, San Sebastian, and we finished in Barcelona. And I learned so much. We went to so many cool places, museums, historical sites, monuments, tasted so many new foods, and I really gained a new perspective on the world and other cultures. I totally recommend that study abroad.
