Scholarships. If you're in high school, that's the best time to start looking for them, and you can go to your counselors in high school, but also the website at BYU, just the general website, has tons of scholarships, and some are general, and some are very specific that you might qualify for, so take the time to read through them. There are a lot of opportunities out there. Now, some of them are really easy to fill out, and some take a little bit more work, but once you get several essays done for general things they require, you can reuse those in others, but don't apply for just one. Go ahead and apply for numerous scholarships because they're wonderful, and usually scholarships are exactly that. You don't have to pay them back in any way, and that helps, of course, so that you don't come out of school with lots of debt, so go for it. It's worth your time.

The number one way to get a scholarship at BYU is just to have good grades. I think they do half tuition and full tuition scholarships based on just purely your GPA. And so if you come out of high school and you have a good ACT score and a good GPA, you can you can get a scholarship that way. But then you have to keep your GPA high if you want to keep that scholarship. So I think that's probably the easiest way. Well, it's not easy, but it's the simplest way to do it. It's simple, but it's not easy. And then you can probably apply for other scholarships as well, but I don't really know too much about that. Just keep your grades high and then you can keep your scholarship.

I've been privileged to be around people that know about a lot of scholarship opportunities. So I have FAFSA. My father was born on a Native American reservation. I'm one quarter Native, and I can go to the Multicultural Student Services, and I can get a scholarship from them. My first semester I had a 3.0. I applied for BYU's scholarship, and I got a scholarship from them. My tribe gives me a scholarship every semester. So for the Native American students, there's a lot of stuff. There are other websites as well. There's tons of them for Native American students.

I think there's a million scholarships out there. Honestly, most people just don't apply for them. So if you apply for all the ones you can, chances are you'll get one or two out there.

BYU does a lot of scholarship opportunities, and that doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to receive a scholarship. But each department has their own amount that they can give out for scholarships, so often each department will have scholarship applications due. And then there's a general one that goes throughout all of BYU, so like a university-wide application, and then each college and department has their own application system. So there are various opportunities. Again, it doesn't mean that you're guaranteed to have a scholarship, but each area in the university has something, so you can at least start there.

Scholarship opportunities are very rare at BYU because the tuition is already so cheap, but there are scholarships that you can apply to that are academic-based, and they are typically around December is when the questions open up. They're the same every year, so if you had a really good essay one year, you can just keep reusing it for the next years. Another thing is to, if you're married, apply to FAFSA because you're going to get a ton of money. That's a great way to save a little bit in college, but something that I like to remember is that the greatest scholarship is that of the tithing fund payers, and so something that's kind of helped me get through college is knowing that there are people who are paying for me to be there that are subsidizing that, and I think gratitude is a great way to persevere when things get challenging in school.

As far as scholarship opportunities, there are honestly a lot of ways that you can get free money. I mean one of the obvious ways is through BYU. If you apply for a scholarship, I think it's almost every February-ish, February 1st, they review your application, look at things like your GPA, you'll have to write some essays, and then they'll give you a scholarship. It can be full ride, it can be half tuition, but another place I'd really suggest is a place called GoMary.com. This website honestly just gathers a bunch of scholarships, ones that people have never heard of before, or super popular ones, ones that make you write essays, others that just make you put in a submission, almost like a raffle, and you can apply for hundreds of scholarships there, and I'm sure you're bound to get one. So GoMary.com is really amazing, it's the BYU scholarship, and there are a lot of places out there as well.

Look for scholarships that are in your specific department or even your college. So I am in the dance department and we have dance department scholarships and then on top of the general BYU scholarships that you can find online, there also are the College of Fine Arts and Communications, that's the college that I'm in, above the department, and we also have scholarships from that as well. So look into your department, your college, and the general BYU scholarship information.

I actually graduated with zero student debt and I attribute that because I treated school like my job and I focused on getting grades that would get me scholarships that paid for my entire education and actually in some instances I made money on scholarships. So for background, BYU has a ton of scholarship opportunities based on grades but then they also have scholarships based on your So speak with your academic advisor, ask them what's available in your major. Then they also have scholarships for study abroad. I took advantage of those. They have grants which you can get a hold of. The Alumni Association will have scholarships. I got an alumni grant from Washington State where I'm from and then they also have scholarships based on your family history. There's tons of opportunities. Also pro tip, it's a lot easier to get a scholarship in summer than in fall winter. It's a lot easier to get a scholarship because there's less competition.

So there's a lot of scholarship opportunities at BYU. The biggest thing is just to get them submitted on time. There's a lot of people who forget about it or delay it to like the last day and they have to do all these essays and they just don't end up getting anything because they're not good essays. But on the BYU there's a scholarship website just like a BYU scholarships and you can just apply. And depending on if you have a recurring scholarship or not you may have to do some essays but you can get an academic scholarship and from what I've heard people with a 3.85 or higher have gotten stuff that's not like set or any official position that's just I hear from people that I know and for myself. And then you can also get different scholarships through different departments. One of the popular ones for foreign languages is the FLAS or FLAS scholarship. So for sure look into that, it's a great opportunity. And then you have by need based scholarships that you can just do again on the BYU scholarship website.

BYU makes it really easy to apply for scholarships. They have a scholarship application. I'm pretty sure it's due in February. And so I would just recommend trying it. I mean, nothing hurts in trying to get a scholarship, trying to apply for it. I think you have to fill out the FAFSA and then do like a few short essays, but nothing hurts in trying. And if you have decent grades and a solid ACT or GPA, then you should totally be setting at least a little bit of money. From what I've heard. That's just what I've heard.

What I would recommend is apply for everything you can. BYU has a great website that has a list of all potential scholarships for your major or just the school in general. If you apply for a bunch of them you're likely to get a handful of them and that can really help pay for tuition and stuff like that.
