So there's this really fun Instagram page called Matchmaker. It used to be called Matchmaker Provo. I don't know if it's still called that. It might be called Matchmaker University now. But they basically put out this survey where you take this really long survey and you answer a bunch of questions about yourself and then there's an algorithm and it basically matches you with someone else who responded similarly to you or compatibly to you on the survey. And then it gives you both access to each other's information so that you can reach out to each other and set up a date if you want to. And I did it once with a bunch of friends and we decided to do a group date because we thought that would make a blind date more fun and less awkward. And it was super fun. I ended up going on a second date actually and the guy was like really nice. We haven't gone on more dates since but like I did it again because I thought it was so fun. So I would definitely recommend that if you're looking for some adventure in your life.

Cost of living at BYU or for attending BYU is definitely reasonable in comparison to when you compare it to other schools. And in terms of Utah compared to other states, it is reasonable. However, it is increasing. As we know with the market, everything continuously increases. But in general, I would say you're looking at rent between upwards of close to 400 to 430, 500 I would say is probably high. But obviously there is different ranges depending on if you are sharing, how many roommates you have, and what kind of amenities you're looking for in your apartment.

The culture at BYU can be very interesting. As a person of color that attends BYU, it can be a little difficult to find your place. However, there are a lot of different ways for you to meet people, and as a college, you just need to find your right crowd. Um, there are things like the MSS office, like the Office of Belonging, and while far from perfect, there are ways that they have events and things where you can try to meet people that are like you. There are tons of clubs and tons of different activities that are opportunities for you to meet new people and find your community.

There's this thing that is done every year in the BYU bookstore and it's called the Starving Student Card. It's sold every year, year-round I think, and they usually have deals at some point during the year, but basically they try to sell you like this coupon book for students and it's supposed to give you discounts for different places around Provo, but it's actually a huge waste of money and most people I know that have gotten them have never really used them, so I would just avoid those at any cost.

I just wanted to add this video into this category just to like talk about BYU a little bit. Basically, there's two really good spots in the library, okay? Depends on like what your preference is. If you want to go meet a bunch of people that are like super chatty, like it's your freshman year, I would go to the periodicals, okay? Go to the periodicals. But if you're trying to lock in and study, go to the fourth and fifth floor. It's the quiet areas. No one goes there. Everyone's just there to lock in.

One thing to remember about your time at BYU is that it is your time and it is your experience. When I attended BYU I was a college athlete and that took a lot of time to practice and to travel and and be away from classes and have to study on the road and all those kinds of things. It was it was a different type of an experience than many of my roommates and friends were having but I loved my choices and so whatever your experience is if you have to work a lot or if you're an athlete or you're studying abroad or whatever your experience is love your choice and give it all you have and when I was finished being a student athlete then I could be a more traditional student and my last year I could have different social experiences and be more involved in BYU in other ways.

One thing to be aware of when you are choosing your program is that there are a lot of programs on campus that have an application process, so you can't just sign up for the classes and be enrolled in the major. Some of them have auditions that you have to do, they have tests you have to take, just those kinds of things that we don't always talk about, and the acceptance rate can be very difficult, so just something to look out for when you are deciding your major so that you, one, know what you need to be preparing for, and two, decide if that's something that you're interested in or not.

I started my college career many years ago at the University of Utah, and when I started I didn't think I would transfer to BYU, but situations and circumstances were such that I later transferred after one year, I transferred to BYU. And the biggest advice I have for transferring students is don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't be afraid to go seek out the services they have to help you understand how your classes transfer, how your grades transfer, and help you get a clear understanding of where you're at in your generals and where you're at in the program that you want to enter, and so that you don't waste a lot of time retaking classes you don't need to, and you just have a clear path. Sometimes it's easy to sit back and just kind of be shy about it, be aggressive about it, ask questions.

BYU CAPS has a really cool resource for people with anxiety. It's a group therapy and if you'd like to get in touch with them just contact CAPS and they can sign you up for group therapy, which is super helpful because a lot of people are going through it and if we can bounce our ideas off of each other it makes it a lot more bearable.

My piece of advice for going to BYU and enjoying your time is to pick something and just do that thing and love it, whatever it is. So if you have a club that you really enjoy, go every week, make it your thing. Or if you have intramurals that you always do, do it every semester. Try to find something that you really enjoy and just do it. You can really get lost and swamped with all your classes. If that's the only thing that you're doing, you might get depressed or lonely. So you need something that you do that you really enjoy that's just pretty much for fun. You can do it as a job too. So like my campus job, I really enjoyed that. I loved it. And so that was my thing. I TA'd for a class and I really enjoyed that. But try to find something that you enjoy and do it so you don't get swamped in all your classes if that's the only thing that you're focusing on.

Not everyone gets into BYU. Not even everyone gets into BYUI, and not everyone gets a mission call. There's many reasons that people may or may not fulfill that typical role of a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but I myself applied for a mission, and I have friends that have applied for missions, and the Church sometimes says, no, you should do this, or we don't feel you're ready, or something like that, and that's totally okay. It's not always like someone's sinning and they have to wait because of that. There's many factors, and each call is from the prophet, and each letter is from the prophet when you are applying for a mission. So don't feel ashamed to try and to have a different path and to be unique.

When it comes to choosing a degree and a career, it can put a lot of pressure on you and so just remember like it is okay to change your mind and it is okay to change your major and it's okay to graduate and again change your mind. I don't think Heavenly Father ever intends for us to have all the answers. It's kind of part of the point of this life. So just remember it's okay if you don't know every single facet of your life. If you are making these steps in prayer with Heavenly Father along the way, you cannot go wrong and what might be an amazing degree, you might not use it in the way that you intended and you can still benefit from it and it'll still be an amazing blessing and benefit into your life. So if you don't have everything perfectly in control, neither does everybody else. Take a deep breath. You're going to be okay. Enjoy. It's going to be awesome.

Elevation is real. Coming from sea level up to the Rocky Mountains, I got a bloody nose during my first few weeks at BYU almost every day and I remember trying to go running up in the canyon with my friend who was on the rugby team and I'm not a big man. At home I could run forever and I ran myself so hard I passed out, fell asleep on the side of the mountain and my friend ran forward and had to run back and wake me up. Woke me up, we went back to the dorms, I drank a bunch of Gatorade and threw it all up in the shower. Elevation is real, but the super fun thing is when you come home then you can really run forever. You got that elevation advantage, but the elevation and the dryness, it's real and people from sea level need to be aware of it. Bring some chapstick.

If you start to feel depression or anxiety, please reach out to your friends or reach out to CAPS. They have a really good program and then they have really nice counselors and then they will also write a accommodation letter for you so that it can help you to went through the like all the academic stuff so I would recommend to go to CAPS if you have a hard time.

One random fact about BYU is that there is a BYU overheard page on Instagram and they have funny quotes that students overhear in their conversations that you can submit so if you ever hear something funny on campus you can submit it to this page and have it featured or you can just scroll through and look at other people's stories and it's really fun and entertaining.

The best thing you can do as a college student is get Walmart Plus. Walmart Plus lets you get your groceries delivered to your front door. Even if you live in Heritage, they can get delivered there as well. It's only six dollars a month for students, which is cheaper than if you're like not a student. That's like a Spotify subscription and you get all of your groceries delivered to you. It's also a great way to not spend too much money. If you're living in Heritage, the creamery, their markup is like 20% on all their items compared to Walmart, so you'll be saving money if you don't shop there. If you go in person to shop as well, it's not uncommon to add things you don't actually need. So Walmart Plus is actually the greatest life hack ever.
