I think some of the best ways to find internships are just through networking, meeting people, talking to people, finding out what they do, meeting people through them, as well as LinkedIn can be a great place to find internships.
I think some of the best ways to find internships are just through networking, meeting people, talking to people, finding out what they do, meeting people through them, as well as LinkedIn can be a great place to find internships.
Really good internship opportunity that I would recommend doing would be through the business school. You put in an application and then I get paired with like a group project and things like that. And if you're not a business major, that's totally fine. I'm not, I'm studying psychology. But what I would say about this particular internship is that it teaches you how to work in teams. It gives you an opportunity to understand that like there are going to be business aspects to whatever you do in your life. Being able to talk to people, work in groups, price points, marketing, everything like that. So the on-campus internship, it's like MSB. Shoot, I wish I could remember the number. But if you Google on-campus internship through BYU, it should pop up. Great opportunity. Yeah, do it.
Some great internship opportunities are through the Marriott School and it's called On-Campus Internships. I believe the class code is MSB 494R. In that, you are assigned to a company that you will work directly with throughout the semester and you'll be able to have real-life work experiences that you can put on your resume and work on projects with a team that will allow you to develop different skills depending on your interests and on your projects. So it's really cool because it's a great way to just gain more experience in the business world.
A great way to get an internship, I use the app called Handshake. Made a profile pretty easy and once you do that and upload your resume to Handshake, then you can apply for jobs really quickly. I was able to apply for about five jobs in less than five minutes. I actually ended up getting one of them. So, there's plenty of opportunities and there's also other ways that you can get internships here, other than using the app that I talked about.
So apart from the on-campus internship program, which is one of the best ways to get your first internship, another piece of advice that I would give as far as looking for opportunities is to join clubs and associations that have to do with what you want to get into because a lot of times they'll have newsletters that send lots of emails with really good opportunities, connections to BYU alumni that can help you get internships. But yeah, get involved with like extracurriculars and a lot of times they'll have other upperclassmen or other students or professionals that come to visit that can help you get those internships. So definitely get involved and be on the lookout because there are a lot of opportunities out there.
There are a lot of amazing internship opportunities as a BYU student and I would say one of the best things that you can do if you're looking for an internship is to network with students who have done the internship that you've done. I'm in the business school and one of the best things that you can do is find someone on LinkedIn who has a position that you want and it's most likely that if they were an intern then they're probably a senior or a junior that year and talk to them, ask to jump on a quick phone call and it's likely they can connect you with other people. This has been very successful for me and other people in the business school. I know that networking kind of has a bad rap and it kind of sounds like a stuffy finance bro thing to do but if you want an internship the best thing that you can do is talk to people and then get referrals based on that.
If you're looking for an internship, the best thing to do is to go to your department and ask in the department. Counseling Services sometimes has ideas too, but that's the best. Your internship, you want it to be in your college and in the field that you're going into, so check with your professors and in your college. There's lots.
Some of the internship opportunities at BOU come through your teachers just emailing you opportunities and you just need to take advantage of those, especially those business teachers. They'll send out emails and say, hey this company is looking for an intern and you just got to take advantage of it. Another good way to find internships is using Handshake. It's BOU's service, it's a lot like LinkedIn and there's a lot of job postings on there that help you get internships as well.
If you're looking for internship opportunities, I recommend going to as many career fairs as you can. I believe every once a semester they host a career fair for like different, you know, like STEM, engineering, stuff like that. I recommend going to those. They have a lot of big employers there, like L3 Harris goes there, the FBI, CIA. I know they go there for the STEM fairs at least. And yeah, if you're looking for internship opportunities, I recommend you going there. And it's a good opportunity just to network with other people and to get to know recruiters.
I was able to get an internship, an on-campus internship, actually with LIFEY, which has been a really cool experience, but I was also able to work it out with them to like make it more compatible with my major, which is statistics, and then I was able to talk to the stats department and even though I'm doing my internship through the Marriott School, I was able to get elective stat credit to major. So just try and like make it work. BYU is pretty good at trying to like work with you and they want to help you graduate and if it's going to help you learn, then they're cool for it.
So I just actually got an internship like two days ago for a startup company called Studer, which is student tutoring made easy for any university student. It's super cool for a pretty awesome startup company. That's a great internship I got that I just wanted to mention here on my feed.
If you're a communications student looking for an internship opportunity, there's a Facebook page for Utah PR alumni, PR internships, communications internships. Search that. It's a wonderful group of people all throughout the state offering opportunities and connections and networking for communications students, public relations opportunities. So take a look and good luck.
My internship opportunity this summer came from the UIU Simmons Center scholarship. So if you're interested in biology or you're interested in something else, but maybe you can't apply to biology or you're just too mad, we had to look at some opportunities anywhere in the U.S. or abroad to study that. And you can get paid by the Simmons Center to go do that as long as it relates to Kansas. So anything that you can do in defensive research, you might have money to go do.
The best way to find internships and especially good quality ones is if you go and talk to as many people as you can. Good quality networking is going to get you further than sending your resume out to random companies.
So this might be a hot take, but on-campus internships like OCI, it's just, it's not that great. Like I have, so I've actually been a manager and I've been like recruiting people and people with an on-campus internship versus people who have like what I like to call like a legit internship, the difference is just uncanny. Like get a real internship through either Handshake, Indeed, like really work hard, work through the networking events. You don't even have to be like a student in that specific major to like get that internship. Like so for example, like if you're just like a freshman and you want to do like a digital marketing or like social media thing, you don't have to be a full-on marketing student quite yet to apply for that internship. Try to like discover yourself, get real internship, and like you'll probably make more money in the end. So that's my, that's my hot take.
Something that was really helpful for me to get an internship or to find one was just signing up for BYU's on-campus internship class that the business school offers. It paired me with a really great internship that helped me land the job that I have now, so highly recommend looking into the classes that the business school provides for internship opportunities.
So BYU has a lot of internship opportunities. One of the things I would say is to go to the Kennedy Center, the International Studies Center, and there's a lot of internship opportunities you can look at overseas and things like that, so it's a great place to look if you're looking for some either foreign language internships or just want experience outside the United States.
There's a million different internships out there. I think you just need to go to the career fairs and put yourself out there.
BYU has great connections with a lot of different alumni and a lot of different companies and corporations in the area and throughout the country. One of the things that I'm doing right now is an on-campus internship through the Marriott School and it gives you a great experience with working on a team, working in a real business environment, in a real situation. So take advantage of that. It's a great way to boost your resume. It's a great way to make connections, to network, and just improve your resume and help you land a better internship, land a better job, and just have a more successful career in the future.
An internship opportunity that you can participate in is an on-campus internship, the OCI. In fact, it's called MSB 494R and it's inside of the business program. It's a great way that you can get a free on-campus internship that counts for credit and then after that it looks really good on your resume that then helps you get a paid internship and that internship then helps you get an actual job or apply for programs. So, I know a lot of business programs like to see that you have an internship, but it looks really good on a resume. You get real working experience with real professionals and all you have to do is sign up for the class and there's so many different opportunities for you to get with people here. I'm working with someone out in Nebraska, a company, and it's been an amazing opportunity. You have leadership experience, you can have so many different roles inside of this team. So, go look at on-campus internships.
Alright, this one is for all those business students out there at BYU. In fact, I don't even think you have to be in the business school to do this. But, if you do, the class is called MSB 494R. It's an internship class where they pair you with companies all across the country that need help. And what you do is you basically just intern them for a semester. You get a really good experience. They teach you the ropes of their company and how to be a good employee. And then you can put it on your resume. It's really good. Team building exercises. And it helps you get an internship in the future. So, on-campus internships are very worth it. Great material. Awesome people.
So a lot of people have probably already talked about this, but on campus there's actually some really good internship opportunities. If you just go to the business school or look up on the internet, OCI, BYU OCI, stands for on-campus internship, like every semester at least for fall and winter. It's a three-credit class, they give you a bunch of different opportunities to work with different companies and you get to choose which one or select some that you'd be interested in and they assign you to work with that company for a semester on an internship project. And so I'd for sure say that if you're a freshman especially and haven't gotten to a program yet or and it can be any major, it doesn't matter your major, for sure try to do that, get some experience, some real world experience, and it's totally worth it. So OCI at BYU.
The best thing you can do for internships is, there's like two options. The first one is to go to your department. Each department has their own set of internships. The other way that I would suggest is to go to on-campus internships. I'm actually doing two internships right now, one through my department and one through these on-campus internships. The on-campus internships are really nice because they connect you with companies from across the world, but the companies allow you to do your internship locally in Provo. So sometimes the companies are based out of Provo and you can meet in person with them, and other times the company is in like Hong Kong and you get to still do that internship for that company. So it's a really cool opportunity. But yeah, just don't be afraid to reach out to your department. They're there to help you.
So I'm currently doing an on-campus internship where we work with a company to help them like reach just a goal of whatever they have. But it's pretty awesome so yeah if you're interested I would look through the catalog and see if you can find where that is and if you can then I would jump on that. I've heard it really helps you look good as you apply into like just the program that you want to do so worth it.
There are so many different internship opportunities available. My advice? Find the one, your dream internship. Find the ones that you're like, oh I hope I can do this one day before you're even applying and then take classes or get jobs that hit those qualifications. You know, don't go into internship season just going, oh this is my first time looking at their qualifications. No, tailor yourself to that dream internship so that when you apply you are the perfect candidate and you get your dream internship.
Hello my friends, if you're looking for a really cool internship opportunity, sign up for the class MSB 492R, Social Impact Projects. It gives you the chance to work with real world organizations and non-profits to make the world a better place. If you're looking for great hands-on experience and class credit, that's where you need to be.
You should definitely try out the on-campus internships. You'll see booths for them in the Wilkes sometimes, or you'll see them see the signs around campus and stuff for on-campus internships. If you see them, I highly recommend you sign up for them. It gives you good experience, you get credit hours for it, and you get to work in real life situations, which I think is very fun. So do on-campus internships, and that'll help you out a lot.
So there's a really cool class that you can take at BYU. It's called on-campus internship or people just call it OCI for short and you literally do a campus or an on-campus internship just for that semester and a lot of people actually get part-time or full-time jobs afterwards depending on how well they do. So I've been doing that this semester for this this company called Lifey and it's been great so far. So yeah I would highly recommend to get some good experience and to get a good internship.
BYU offers a lot of internship opportunities. For example, I did an internship called Project Media where we helped to do research on kids and how media affects them.
I think that a great opportunity for an internship is something called an OCI. It's part of the business school. It's an on-campus internship and you're able to get real business experience and it's something I feel really fortunate to be part of and I've learned a lot already.
