Inspirational stories - Brigham Young University Video Transcripts

One of my most inspirational stories while attending BYU actually came a long ways away from campus. I was a student athlete, therefore we traveled lots and lots of miles and were always a representative of BYU. And we had the privilege to do devotionals and to speak in church and attend temples away from BYU. And I think the thing that was the most inspirational to me is how people greeted you as a BYU student and as a BYU athlete away from campus. People were always very gracious with us, they were always kind, and always welcomed us into their neighborhoods and even into some of their homes. I went into some people's homes individually and it was very inspirational to me to watch how people loved BYU and any representation of it that came.

While at BYU, you have the opportunity to be able to make friends with some really cool people. One of those really cool people I know is my friend Neil. He's really cool. He's gone through cancer four times. He is an absolute inspiration because he kept fighting and while he's in the hospital like there he had some really hard days but he he set goals. He learned all the nurse's names who helped him and you know through all of this he's determined to go to BYU. He had to take off some semesters because or leave early after the semester started even because because he got cancer and then he had to go going again and but he's still determined to like he's been determined to serve a mission. He's been determined to go to college and he's such an awesome inspiration.

Sometimes it's okay to just take a break. I'll always remember You know one year I was I had a lot on my mind. I was really tired. I was really busy life was hectic I was taking like 15 credits and working part-time and like Part of a singing group and I just I was like, you know what? I just need I have 30 minutes before my next engagement my next, you know, whatever it was. I just need like a 20 minute nap So I was like found a bench. I was in the hvac the fine arts building. I found a bench lay down on the bench Doesn't you can sleep anywhere? No one cares in college Okay, and I just took a nap and I woke up 20 minutes later and I could not even remember Everything that i've been worried about like I remembered the important things, but I wasn't stressed I I didn't like sometimes all you need is a nap. All you need is a snack break You know, it's okay to take a break and usually that'll help a lot

When I started going to school at BYU, I was super prayerful and super wanting to know what to do for my career and what to study. I felt really strongly directed to look into journalism and then I felt like I should do some publishing of videos online and had these experiences where I just felt kind of inspiration rushing to my mind. And long story short, if it weren't for the spiritual experiences I had at BYU, the Lifey app and YouTube channel etc. would not exist. Inspiration is real. Seek it.

When I started college, I just didn't know what I wanted to major in. I started the business program at BYU and I wanted to major in marketing, maybe, and I started taking classes and I was failing. I failed finance. I had never failed a class before in my life. I felt so inadequate and just like, how am I ever going to get through college? And then I took a class about Sub-Saharan Africa for fun because I didn't really know much about Africa, and I fell in love with geography. I took so many geography classes and just switched my major and majored in geospatial science, and I graduated, worked a little bit for a mapping company, and now I'm back in marketing. So life kind of comes full circle and really it doesn't matter necessarily what you major in, just do what interests you and don't worry too much about how it's going to impact your future career because experience is almost more critical than your major itself. So yeah, hopefully that's inspirational.

When I attended BYU as a freshman, my high school was local, so a lot of my high school friends were there. And I found that I actually didn't find what I was looking for. I wanted to be a new person. I wanted to create my adult person and figure things out, and it was just too much high school stuff. So the next semester, I went to BYU Hawaii, and I loved it. And I went alone. None of my friends went with me, and it was just a blast. I took scuba diving there, and Hawaiian dancing, and Tahitian fast shake, and tennis, and other classes too, of course. Loved it. And that gave me the break I needed, the adjustment I needed, and I came back to Provo for the next semester and loved it. It took me that break. So don't be afraid to give yourself time to adjust.
