Housing recommendations - Brigham Young University Video Transcripts

As a freshman, I lived in Helaman halls and it was super fun, it was super awesome. I did love my roommate and like made lots of friends in Helaman and that was really fun. And the fact that like you don't have very much space to yourself in your bedroom like made me more outgoing and more like wanting to do things other places. So like I didn't really study in my room, I mostly studied in the library. And then also like having all of your meals, like having to have a meal plan and having to get food other places most of the time, like it made me a lot of times make plans with people to go get food together and stuff. Or even if I was just by myself like finding people like meeting people in the places where I was eating. Personally, like I wish I thought a little bit more about that just because I really love to cook and I missed having my own kitchen. That was something that was a little tricky for me. But the social aspect of it was definitely like super fun and awesome and I loved it.

For freshman housing, Heritage is definitely the way to go for me at least. I don't know, I got paired up with a bad roommate at Helaman and it kind of ruined it for me. Moved to Heritage. There was a bunch of dudes in that apartment that I really like. They're great guys. It works a lot better. Probably depends on your roommates, but you get more chances with more roommates, so.

So my husband and I currently live at Wymount on campus, Wymount Terrace, and it's super awesome. The rent is like pretty cheap compared to everywhere and it is like pretty old, but they like have free maintenance. So like literally anything, like your drain's clogged, there is like a slow leak, obviously like anything big that happens. They'll even like come change a light bulb for you, like another small thing. So they're like really good at keeping on top of things. You just have to like call and ask them. So that's awesome. And then we've super loved like the people we lived around. It's nice to have like a lot of students around and just like people that are in the same stage of life. So if you're married, totally recommend Wymount Terrace.

So when I first started attending BYU, I lived at an apartment complex just south of campus. It's called Spyglass. Most people don't know about it, but it was a super nice place. I had my own bedroom. We had a laundry machine and a dryer, a washing machine and a dryer inside of our apartment. It was super nice and it wasn't super expensive either. So Spyglass, just south of campus, is a spot I would definitely recommend.

...Hillman Halls because it's the best place ever. It's so fun, it's so social, everyone here is so nice, and you're like involved, and you make so many good friends. I love it. It's the best, and it's spacious.

To contradict something that was said earlier, I live off campus and it's actually amazing. I live at a place called Stadium 150. It's actually not expensive at all. It's a really, really good price. And I've had some of the nicest management I've been able to talk to. They're interested in forming personal relationships with you and getting to know you. It's like they actually genuinely do care, which is super cool. And being able, like I didn't have a choice over my roommates, but I've been able to have some of the really nicest people in the corner. I'm going to try and get to know them a little bit better. And my neighbors as well. It is a little bit of a tighter community and there's two wards that occupy that space and everyone knows pretty much each other. I would say it's a really nice place to be. So underrated, secret place, Stadium 150. It's right above, right north of campus, right next to, well, the football stadium, right next to the Ellicott Stadium. Really close to the Marriott Center. Really good parking. All you want.

Best housing place, in my opinion, is Wideview. It's a nice little apartment. It's you and a couple of roommates or your spouse. Worst housing places are the anywhere off-campus. Usually they're more expensive unless you get really lucky and some elderly couple lets you live in their basement. Usually that's only for married people though. So on-campus, fantastic. Get on the housing list as early as possible. As soon as they clear it out, get on it again. Just keep trying and eventually you'll get in and you can stay in as long as you keep updating your housing.

I would recommend living in Heritage Halls if you're looking for on-campus housing. I lived here for three years. I love how close it is to campus, especially to the Wilk, you know. But yeah, it's really nice. I call it the Beverly Hills of campus because it's literally on the hill, on campus. And yeah, it's a really awesome place.

I think one of the best things I could do freshman year was to live at Heritage Halls. It was such an amazing experience, so many friends, amazing wards, like it's so good. So I would 100% recommend Heritage Halls over Helaman. I heard so many bad stories about people just like not liking it at all and people transferring after fall semester into winter semester into Heritage Halls because their experience at Helaman was so terrible. So definitely look into Heritage before you fully decide on Helaman Halls.

My number one recommendation for housing is definitely probably the Colony just south of campus and off of 900. I am thoroughly impressed with one, they always had parking like always. You could get something even within like usually about 50 yards of your apartment almost at all times. I would also say that socially that probably was the best place I ever lived, the reason being is because everybody will like sit on their porch and they will sit and talk and I have friends that I still stay in touch with and see weekly from the Colony and we have all graduated almost seven years ago since we last saw each other and I still see them all the time so I definitely say the Colony was the best place by far.

Honestly, if you want the nicest plates, it's honestly going to be Heritage. I know it's like kind of like, you know, has the stigma of being like the uncool people. I actually had a great time in Heritage, like especially as a freshman, that's a great start. Wouldn't really recommend it for past like freshman or sophomore year. But honestly, when looking for a house, like no, always make sure you at least have half the amount of bathrooms for number of people staying in the apartment. I was in a six man apartment with one bathroom and let me tell you, it was most miserable experience of my life. So just make sure that like, if you're like in a group of like four to five guys or girls or whatever, make sure you have at least like two bathrooms, like two to three bathrooms just to like, it just will help the dynamic of your apartment not be so stressed out. And it's it just won't be as gross, you know, so.

For housing for freshmen, I would recommend living at Helaman Halls. If you're a girl, I would say live at David John because you don't have the communal bathroom, but it's still super, super social. David and the meal plan can kind of be hard, honestly, but it's super social and it's really nice to not have to worry about food as much, where you're already having a big transition, a life transition from living at home to being on your own. So that, and currently for my sophomore year, I'm living at Liberty Square and it's been so much fun. I would really recommend it. The ward has been super fun and social and it's really close to campus. It's only two blocks. It takes like five minutes to walk there. So it's not bad at all. And it's a lot of return missionaries. So if you're a return missionary, it's super fun. Yeah, I would say those have been really good experiences for both of them so far.

Whatever place you're looking at, look to see if it's run by an individual or a property management company. Ideally, an individual can run it for you. If an individual runs it for you, they're going to give you better prices, it's going to be really easy, communication will be easy, etc, etc. And then the management company, the property management company, don't give them any money. They're going to hit you with a bunch of extra fees and take advantage of you.

My biggest housing recommendation would be as a freshman to just live on freshman, like to take freshman housing, take advantage of it, just be a freshman, just enjoy the phase of life you're in, live on campus housing, but once you can live off campus, I would always say live south of campus. I think there's just so much, it's a fun vibe and it feels like all my friends live south campus, so I can see them whenever I want. Obviously you can stay doing whatever you want either way, but it's just fun whenever it's a block or two away and you're only a block or two from campus, so I would always say live south of campus.
Video 15 Transcript
My housing recommendation is to live at the village or King Henry because they're super social.

I never lived on campus, but what I will say is I'm pretty jealous of the meal plan, especially the one where you get like credits to just eat in the Cougar Eat every day. So, housing recommendations, like it might be a bit pricey, but on-campus housing seems like a good move. I also did off-campus housing. I lived at a place called The Colony and I really liked it there.

Living in Heritage was probably the best housing choice that I ever could have made. It's super easy to get out of your contract if you don't like it. There's a lot of places in Provo that will try to scam you. It's not uncommon to never get your deposit back at other places in Provo and there's a lot of hidden fees. But when you live in Heritage, you know exactly what you're getting. And especially since you have a kitchen, you're super close to campus. I mean, I think you can get to the other side of campus within 10 minutes if you live in Heritage. So some people kind of make fun of Heritage because it's on-campus housing, but I would say it's actually a super great place to live and the wards are amazing. So if you're looking for a place as a freshman or even as a sophomore, Heritage will be a really great choice.

I would recommend looking into and applying for housing plenty of time in advance, so you don't have to worry about not finding what you're looking for or having to put yourself on waitlists or stuff like that.

My freshman year, I lived at Helaman Halls and I absolutely loved it and could not recommend it more, especially for the type of person who's really social or who wants to be. Also, you don't necessarily have to be social there, but it definitely does nurture kind of a social like climate, I guess, where there's like 30 people in your little hall, right, and you have just your roommate, but of course, whenever anyone's out in the hallway, like we'd all poke our heads out and be like, hey, how's it going? So my roommates or my like hallmates my freshman year have become my best friends and we still get together and we still hang out and so I love my time at Helaman Halls.
Video 20 Transcript
Live with people you know. I repeat, live with people you know. Your immediate roommate doesn't necessarily need to be somebody that you know super well, but there's a lot of weird roommate stories out there, and so even if you live in a dumpy place, just having the right roommate makes a huge difference. You can live in a nicer place, but your roommates may not turn out to be that great, and your rooming experience will just be terrible. So just try to know somebody, right? Just have some kind of social outlet. Your first year as a freshman, it's a little bit harder, but once you're a sophomore and on, just live with somebody that you know. It'll just make your life so much easier. So places, don't really care. Really just doesn't depend, but live with somebody you know.

My freshman year of UIU, I lived at Helaman Halls, and I am so glad that I did. I know that the meal plan is expensive and kind of a pain if you like to cook your own food and things, and I know that it's really cramped living and things, but the setup of Helaman Halls, the fact that the room is smaller, the fact that you have like 20 girls to one bathroom, it kind of forces us, not forces, but encourages and gives opportunities for for interaction that might not happen otherwise, and it was such a blast to just like get to know all the girls in my halls and be live in my hall and be living so close to them and have kind of just like this community of other college students that were going through what I was and everyone there's without going and social, and it was an awesome experience, so I loved living at Helaman.
Video 22 Transcript
I recommend not living in a place that you haven't heard personal good reviews from someone you trust. And I think that's so important because living someplace that you haven't really known anyone to live there in recent years is really hard. Like you're going in kind of blind because they can have a lot of hidden fees and things like that. So ask about that to the person you're renting from, whether it be an apartment complex, whether it be someone's basement. Just be very upfront and ask them what is the full total fees of everything and what are they for. And just be very straight up with them. And they're going to tell you, but they hide a lot of things. So just ask a lot of questions.

So I'm a freshman, so I don't have a ton of like housing recommendations, but I currently live in Heleman in the dorms and I 100% recommend for your freshman year. It is so so social I have met so many new people the girls in my hall are like all my best friends You kind of have to just be willing to put yourself out there But it's super easy to make friends here because you have so many people just like steps away from you in your hallway and stuff and there's a lot of like hall activities that we do and Even ward activities. I know that's kind of in every ward, but it's just super social There's something going on every night here at Heleman whether it's playing games in the lobby or just talking with people For hours in the hallway, so super fun definitely recommend for your freshman year

Something I've learned about BYU housing back when I was there and now as a parent of children who are there is that there's really truthfully no great place. I feel like they're all very similar. I wouldn't say there's many that edge each other out to be honest, but I do feel like what makes BYU housing is the people. And so I would say get your people, get your friends, and go find where you want to be. And you'll love that place because of the people that you're with. And you'll love that place because of the things that you do together with your roommates and your friends and your neighbors. I really think that people make the housing experience a positive one and not the place. Side note, BYU housing needs to step up their game. The same places are still there.
Video 25 Transcript
I'm biased, but my housing recommendation has to be Campus Plaza. That's where I'm at right now. There's six people, two rooms, one bathroom, but it's super, super cheap housing, but you're very, very, very close to campus. You can get to campus in one minute, and you got the best roommates, so.
Video 26 Transcript
I would say for housing, you definitely need to look very much in advance. Do not wait for the last minute. If you are a freshman, a lot do on campus. However, my personal experience, I lived off campus from the beginning. I lived at the Riviera, which I thought was a pretty decent living place in terms of price and how nice it was. There are definitely some places that are quite very, very old. The Riviera has been renovated, and so it's a decent, but wouldn't be your lowest price point. But it has a great community, and the ward was great when I did attend. So there's that one, or there's the Branbury, which is a little bit farther from campus, but also pretty same type of level of housing.

My housing recommendations are first for freshmen to live on campus. I lived in Helaman Halls. I think it's a little bit better than Heritage Halls, but there will be plenty of other opportunities to live off of campus. The only time you have to live on campus is your freshman year and it is honestly just like an unmatched experience. It's so fun, so social, you get to meet so many great people. So that's what I recommend for freshman year. As far as like off-campus housing goes, I live at Old Academy right now and I love it. The ward is super social, great people, it's very mature. So if you're looking for more of a mature, older crowd, this is definitely your spot. Like I said, the ward is amazing. The bishop is even more amazing and there's always social things going on. So you'll definitely meet people if you live here. It is a little bit pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. You get a really, really nice and big apartment and private room, which is so awesome.
