Hands down, one of the best free resources at BYU is their shuttle system. You can save so much money attending college by not having to have a car and insurance, gas, etc. If you can just utilize the free transportation system. I don't know very many universities that shuttle the distance they do, the UTA pass, etc. It is awesome. You can get where you're going whenever you want. The stops are frequent and stations everywhere. Easy system. I for sure recommend that you utilize that free opportunity for sure.

One free resource that I think is sort of underutilized at BYU is actually just the library. I checked out a bunch of books, I read a lot of books when I was at BYU. The BYU library is one of the biggest libraries, I think it's one of the biggest in the country, it's definitely one of the biggest in the state for sure. So there's a ton of books, so if you ever want to read a book while you're at BYU is probably the time to do it, because once you leave BYU then you're gonna have to buy it or rent it or find some way to get it, but it's just gonna be in the BYU library, so that's what I would do. It's definitely underutilized, people don't really check out books, but I would recommend it.

One of the best and most fun free resources available at BYU is definitely the international cinema. BYU puts together these showings of international films, of American-made films, and they show multiple a week at different times and everything, and I've used that for dates, for, you know, sometimes you need to go to a movie, like an international film for a class or something, and I've just gone for fun, like by myself personally. I really enjoy it, but that's one of the best free resources to take advantage of at BYU is the international cinema.

Besides the free food, the best free resource is the Reading and Writing Center in the library. It's where you can go and get essentially professional help for your essays and the things that you're writing in your classes. Super duper helpful, you just sign up in advance or you can walk in, usually there's a long way though, and people will just sit down and help you with your writing. They'll read through your essays and give you edits or advice and like even just picking a thesis. It is super helpful, definitely definitely would recommend, it's a great resource. Go to the Reading and Writing Center.

If you have an app idea, business idea, invention, and you don't quite know the steps to take to launch it, you can meet with BYU Legal Advisors and they'll give you initial steps to take and advice and also whether or not you wanna partner with BYU, et cetera. So that's a great free tool that you can use.

Did you know that at the library you can check out camera equipment for making movies or videos? I mean, we all have our iPhones now, but they have real camera equipment you can make for really awesome videos, and you can check it out. And they have lots of other things at the library that you can check out that aren't just books, so check it out.

BYU has a really awesome program called CAPS, where you can get free counselling.

There are so many free resources on campus at BYU. You have like your writing center, for example. You go to the writing center, get help with any of your papers. Another great thing is if you're a full-time student or just a student there, you can use the Smithfield House Gym, right? They have a nice gym. I wouldn't recommend going around like 7 30 a.m. or like 4 30 p.m. in the afternoon. It's really crowded, but other than that, a great place to go and not too crowded. I know the Women's Resource Center, they do a lot of free stuff. For example, they have yoga Saturday mornings from what I hear. I haven't been to it, but I heard it's a great place to be. And then just going, doing on-campus activities, there's always something going on. A bunch of free things that you can do. A lot of clubs you can go to which are free and just a great place to be and a lot of stuff that you can do.

Go to the free labs. I lived in the math lab while I was at BYU and also the physics labs for a semester. They're incredible. I don't know how you would pass classes without going to the labs.

The best free resource on BYU campus is the CAPS Counseling Center. You as a student can get free therapy sessions which is a huge deal. Therapy can cost a lot of money and so when you're in college and you don't have a lot of money to go to therapy, you can sign up for the CAPS Counseling Center at BYU to see a therapist for free and it's honestly such a great resource that I think more students need to know about and need to use.

Go check out the Harold B. Lee Library. It's I think five stories tall or six maybe. There's tons to do there. There's books everywhere you look so if you want to check out a book or read a book or something that's a place to go. If you need a place just to study and have some quiet time, of course the library is a great place for that. They also have computers there that you can use. You can rent out like if you need even like a charger for your laptop or something you can rent those out there. You can rent out rooms so you can have a little private study room to yourself. So there's lots to do in the Harold B. Lee Library. You should go check it out.

The best free resource you can use is the library. There are often times that you will get assigned a plethora of textbooks that you need for each of your classes, and if you take that ISBN number and you plug it into the HBLL website, a lot of times you can get those books either to just check out from the library for free, or you can use them online, and then you can like command f and you can search through the textbook versus having to like go get an actual paper one and pay $200 for a textbook. You can just use it on the library for free.

When you get into BYU, you're assigned a peer mentor, and that is something that I feel like a lot of people don't take advantage of. Even if you just meet with them once or, like, text them, you know, it's just nice if you have a random question about, you know, getting your printing to work or where to eat or whatever, like, you know, they are there for you to give you advice. Like, that's what they're there for, so take advantage of that.

A free resource that I've taken advantage of a lot is the Math Lab. It's a place in the Talmadge building. It's kind of like a math and computer science building where you go and you're able to get help with your math homework and just get help from other math tutors and it's all for free and you can get free tutoring too if you sign up for that and it's all free. A lot of people don't know about it and I've found it so beneficial when I'm struggling in my math classes.

So there's a lot of free resources at BYU. Some of them include the shuttle around Provo, there's also the Frontrunner that can take BYU students from Provo to Salt Lake City and back, there are Pell Grants, FAFSA, scholarships if you have a good GPA, there's free student performances in the music building, you've got the multimedia lab on the fourth floor of the library with lots of great editing software, Adobe Suite and so forth, you've got LinkedIn Learning or lynda.com on some of the computers on campus, there are piano rooms, entrepreneurship networking events, audio and video recording rooms, you've got tons of computer labs, there's advisors, counselors, the Museum of Art Museum, the Bean Museum, and the Science Museum. There's a lot of free resources that are awesome.

Some of the free resources at BYU include a free shuttle service, which is really good. I would definitely recommend that. My first semester at BYU, I didn't know about it for like several weeks to like a month, and like finally once I started using it, I was like, wow, this is so much better. I didn't have a car, and so it kind of, there are just like, I don't know, five, six, seven shuttle routes around campus, and so depending on where you live, you can find one. They cover a lot of the areas that students live, so that's definitely a good resource. Another good resource is your peer mentor. Definitely talk to your freshman peer mentor. They're there to help you. If you describe to them your situation, your needs, your wants, they will help you. Another big recommendation I have is getting an on-campus job because those really help you to know what's going on and how BYU works.
Video 17 Transcript
A good free resource is your peer mentor. I have one and I had a meeting with her and it was so helpful because she talked to me about a bunch of like housing and stuff because I'm not serving a mission so next year I have to find housing and so it's super helpful because she's like been through it all and especially with classes and like testing it was super helpful because she explained to me like how it all works because I was new to everything.
Video 18 Transcript
If you are looking to record music or to make a podcast or anything to do with audio, there is a free studio for BYU students on the fourth floor of the library. You can reserve it online and then they have great microphone equipment and pretty average software, but it's a good place to get started if you're looking to get into music making.
Video 19 Transcript
If you ever need like a mental health counselor, they have those for free. Finance counselor, that's been the biggest help for me. I didn't know what I was doing with scholarships or with loans or how to handle loans or how to defer them for my mission, all that stuff. So make sure you talk to the financial like advisement center and they can get you a meeting with someone and they can just help you figure out all your finances and what to do and make a plan for paying it off and stuff like that. The freshman peer mentor program is a super awesome resource for freshmen. It's just basically someone who can help you find all the resources that you need and they can help support you if you're struggling on campus.

BYU has a lot of good free resources. My personal favorite is probably the CAPS program. It's the Counseling and Psychological Services. And as long as you're taking a class at BYU, you can sign up for just like a free like quick fix kind of thing or you can be put on the waiting list. And they're like really helpful. Like you only need like 45 minutes and like they give you lots of really good advice. And the best part is that counseling is usually expensive and they're 100% free.

BYU has tons of volunteers that do tax returns for free every year for students. It's called the VITA Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. In that group, usually you can just log into their website, search VITA BYU. You can put in your tax documents. This year because of COVID it's turned online, but usually they're in the Tanner building. You can just go in, bring your documents, and they can file your taxes for you for free. And they always try to get you the biggest possible refund you can.
Video 22 Transcript
There's an app that I use called Todoist. It's like to-do-ist, and it just lets you make to-do lists. It's like, there's a free version which has everything that I've ever wanted, and I think there's a pro version which is like two bucks a month. I don't know why you would need it, but you can do that too. I use it for managing my entire life in to-do lists. It is one of the best apps I've ever used in my life. So you could try it.
Video 23 Transcript
I think a free resource that's totally underrated is our student UTA pass. I use it all the time, so I take the bus like UVX or even just like Provo City buses everywhere and it's totally free and then a lot of times I'll take Frontrunner home and it's just it's super nice, saves me money on gas. I even have a car but I usually take the train because it's a lot cheaper and I can do homework while I'm traveling.
Video 24 Transcript
One really good resource is the BYU on-campus internship through the Marriott School of Business. You don't have to be a business student to do this, and it's just an internship that counts for three credits of your semester, and you sit down and you do internship stuff. It's actual experience on a job. You can learn how to, I don't know, there's all sorts of things. You can learn how to code, you can learn how to market stuff through social media, but it's just a really good thing to put on your resume. So go to the BYU Marriott School of Business and get an on-campus internship.

In the wilk, you can get free therapy.

As a returned missionary at BYU, I got the feeling like a really old student. I was really worried about keeping my costs down. Getting Pell Grants was a key thing in keeping my costs down as an older student. Really, BYU is so inexpensive to begin with. You've got to be exploring Pell Grants. As long as you're a student in good standing, those resources are available to you and every student, especially when you're married or a returned missionary, you're approaching the age or the family status that allows you access to those funds. You've got to consider it.
Video 27 Transcript
Check online on BYU's website, but also don't count out the Campus Administration Center. You can find a lot of different free things there, too. If you've decided your major, talk to the professors in your major. There's oftentimes free things there that you can take advantage of in your department.
Video 28 Transcript
There's a lot of free food. I think I had a roommate who I never saw her go to the store and we lived with her for two semesters and she just had like this list of everywhere you get free food on campus so it's pretty sweet. I know they do these, what are they called, where people like stand up at the front and talk to you about certain things. Anyway, if you just like look at the things that are posted, they have stuff like that where they have lunch provided or there's like career fairs where you can go get free stuff. I highly recommend checking all that stuff out because free food is the best. The more you get involved as well, like clubs often offer free stuff.

The biggest free resource I never took as much advantage of as I could have is the library, especially the online library and the articles and things that you have access to being a student. Take advantage of that. It's free and you will never have a library as big and as accessible as that ever, so take advantage of that.
Video 30 Transcript
Hands down the best free resource at BYU is the laptops at the library. So I took IS-201 and I do not have a good quality PC. I have a Chromebook and so I actually completed the entire class like in the library using their laptops because the desktops in the library are so much better than whatever I could find.
