Safety advice - Brazil Video Transcripts
Video 1 Transcript
Sao Paulo is one of the more dangerous cities in Brazil. Like we would hear about people getting like mugged and stuff all the time. You will probably want to make sure that you are okay getting that you're not carrying anything that is really valuable. I think the most valuable thing I ever carried on me was my camera, which wasn't that great anyway. That's pretty much the only safety thing is making sure you look before both ways before crossing the street and that you don't carry anything valuable.

I would say learning the language and being able to speak it as fluently as you can is another very good way to stay safe down in Rio de Janeiro, because if you ever are in a sticky situation or any situation where you feel uncomfortable, it's important that you can communicate clearly, and that way you'll be able to stay out of harm's way.

Be careful when crossing the streets, wait for the light to turn on to you, so you can go and cross without any problem. And pay really close attention, be really observant, especially in the middle of the favelas. Because there are some really crazy things that can happen there sometimes. So just pay really close attention and be observant. And if you see a lot of crowds, don't go through the crowds, just try to find another way, try to turn around.

You just have to be smart about some of the things you do. You don't want to be flashing money around. You don't want to be wearing expensive watches or bringing your camera out in public, things like that.

To be completely honest, there are some areas that are pretty dangerous. I never got into very serious trouble. I would just say always don't act like you're lost, know where you're going, walk with a purpose, be kind, and always have a purpose in whatever you do.

Most areas are fine. Obviously there's a few areas that are a little more, you have to take some precautions, especially in the favela, which is the slum.

Brazil's generally pretty safe. I only got robbed the one time in a whole year and a half I was there. I mean, don't walk around with a bunch of money on you. That wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. And just, you're gonna smell a lot of the good herb being smoked, and I'd say just kind of avoid those regions.

Brazil is a little bit dangerous. I know that because I'm a Brazilian and I'm living here and through my whole life. I'm 22 years old and I never got robbed for example. I would recommend to be aware of your surroundings and always be confident and don't use your cell phone in public, especially in the big cities.

Safety advice, look both ways before you cross the street. People are crazy when they drive. Don't touch the shower head if you can see the exposed wires coming out of it.
