What were some favorite foods?

  • La lasaña o pasticho, la pastel de brócoli, pollo con ensalada y arroz. Todos aquellos que se preparacen con amor. (Jessica)
  • Todos, adiro mucho el amor que tuvieron los miembros para compartirlo con nosotras. (Linda)
  • Arepas con carne mechada, empanadas con queso, platanos fritos, caraotas negras con arroz, parilla de la Colonia Tovar, Chipis hamburguesas, cachapas llaneras con queso de mano, and of course, pabellon crilloio. I still cook pabellon every year or two, and my wife and friends love it. I loved everything except for jugo de remolacha y lechoza (beet and papaya). (Dustin)

What was a funny experience?

  • Cada vez que caía la lluvia sobre mi compañera y yo, salíamos a procelitar ya que esa manera sabíamos que nos recibirían mas rápido. (Jessica)
  • Cuando un perro intento morder y rompio mi jumper y hizo que mi compañera volara por las escaleras. (Linda)
  • Swinging on vines and touching a sloth in San Antonio de los Altos. Playing ultimate frisbee in Parque Del Este in the mud. Getting chased by the smallest dog in the barrio every day. Chatting with the other Elders in our apartment every evening about how our day went. We often had hilarious stories. (Dustin)
  • The time I accidentally broke my companion’s bed and we propped it up with a box of copies of The Book of Mormon. (Heather)
  • I fed the mission president and his wife iguana and because they didn’t believe me after they’ve eating them I showed them the heads. The president end up having to take his wife to the hospital. (Disney)
  • Having the member children and their friends watch in amazement when I would drink an entire bottle of cold Fanta or Frescolito in one gulp when I was serving in Acarigua. It was hot enough that it was never a problem, and they couldn’t believe it was possible. (Nik)
  • Jugar en las actividades de zonas con todos los misioneros, el recrearnos y despejar la mente. Comer entre todos y hablar de los desafios y de las preguntas incoherentes que haciamos y reirnos de ellas. (Ederson)

What was a crazy experience?

  • Cuando en algunas zonas ocurría algo trágico y minutos después salíamos de una lección espiritual y nos tocaba salir casi como cohetes en desplazamiento. (Jessica)
  • Pasar por los barrios peligrosos y sentir que El Padre igual nos protegia. (Linda)
  • Serving in Petare was always an adventure. We had to run and hide from malandros, we hid in a house while gunfights happened outside, and we even saw one of our investigators shooting at someone!! Very uncomfortable moment. Semana Santa in 23 de Enero was also exciting. (Dustin)
  • The time that my companions and I decided to have a picnic at the park at noonday and some homeless kids tried to steal her camera. (Heather)
  • I almost fell off the cliff of the top of the mountain at Margarita Island with my companion elder Julio Gonzalez. (Disney)
  • When my companion wanted to show me a fruit that was in the backyard of one of our investigator’s house. A few days later, he showed us a snake that they had killed that was in the backyard where we had been jumping around. That was more scary afterwards than at the time. What a blessing to see how Heavenly Father takes good care of his missionaries.  (DeAnn)
  • My companion and I were waiting for a bus back to La Victoria after teaching at a member’s house outside of town when a police 4×4 came careening up to us. The officer in the passenger seat really didn’t like gringos, and he held a shotgun on us while demanding our papers. We ended up sitting in the jail house for about an hour (but not in a cell thankfully) while they ran our cédulas and identities before they let us go. (Nik)
  • Llegar a las casas de las personas menos adineradas en los cerros de los sitios donde caminabamos buscando personas para enseñar, ver a las personas usando drogas y con sus armas en las calles, y pasar de ellas desapercibidos y en ocasiones hablando como si nos conociesen. (Ederson)

What was a spiritual experience?

  • En mi primera lección de mision conocí a la madre de una familia donde ella no era miembro y jamas había querido escuchar las lecciones de los misioneros o misioneras. Fue mi primera lección -no sabia que era miembro, pero si sentía que debía hablar de los convenios eternos- así que saque mi forro de recomendación del templo en donde se hallaba la imagen del templo de mi país y -viéndola a ella vestida de blanco- le prometí y testifique de mas bendiciones y promesas eternas que las familias podemos tener en este tiempo. Ella acepto cada una de ellas y se comprometió a prepararse para recibirlas. Al culminar y partir de ese lugar mi entrenadora llorando me explicaba que ella y su familia no eran miembros, y que habían intentado tantas veces y jamas obtuvieron resultados, y que también pudo verla vestida de blanco. Jamas olvidare el sentimiento tan intenso que venia a través del espíritu cada vez que enseñaba, y sobretodo al prometer. (Jessica)
  • Estar en unas escaleras y ver pasar a una señora ful cansada y no perder la oportunidad de compartir el evangelio con ella que aun hasta la fecha mantengo contacto. (Linda)
  • Kneeling down in a small bathroom en el Barrio 23 De Enero, praying that God would touch the heart of a young man and his mother as we taught them. I still remember every single thing about that moment, and how the Spirit of the Lord filled the entire apartment like a wave. When we returned and we taught them the charla, the room seemed fuzzy the Spirit was so strong. They knew we were teaching the words of God. There are too many experiences to count. They happened frequently, and they form many of the pillars of my testimony that God lives, loves us all, and that He wants us to return to Him. (Dustin)
  • A time when we taught the Law of Chastity to a single woman who broke down crying saying she needed help and strength to break off the relationship with a married man. She knew that God had sent this to her to give her His teachings and the spiritual strength to do what was right. (Heather)
  • Too many to recount, but to be part of somebody’s heart changing and to take the decision to be baptized it’s one of the greatest spiritual experience anyone can hope for. (Disney)
  • When my companion and I went to see someone that she had taught but they had chosen not to be baptized. They were having problems. They were unemployed and they had a fight and the husband left and didn’t come back and she was worried. I suggested to my companion that we fast and pray for them. We didn’t have the chance to go back for a while but when we did he had come back and they had found jobs. They helped me to see the power of fasting and prayer. (DeAnn)
  • Teaching a long-term investigator when it felt as if the heavens opened up above me and a beam of light came down, reflected through me, and hit her full on. At that point, she could no longer deny the truth of the Gospel, and was soon baptized. (Nik)
  • Sentir los discursos de los lideres de la iglesia, en un caso en particular, escuchar y ver por primera vez a un Apostol del Señor, el Elder Quentin L. Cook, compartir su testimonio y sentir la influencia del Espiritu irradear de el. Ver a los investigadores convencidos de saber por medio del Espiritu que la iglesia es verdadera. (Ederson)

What are some interesting facts about the Caracas Mission?

  • La manera en como las escrituras eran parte de mis hechos y no solo eso lo que incentivaba hacer a una persona, al igual que una oración de fe. El orar y leer las escrituras de manera significativa y profunda eran algo interesante, admirable y de gran valor para mi. También las necesidades, situaciones que investigadores, menos activos, conversos, miembros regulares y compañeros tenían en sus vidas, captaban mi interes de una manera tan poderosa que no podía dejar de escucharles para servirles.   • Siempre tener comunicacion con el lider misional y el obispo en el caso de estar en los barrio al igual que con el Presidente y la Hermana de la mision. (Linda)
  • We used to serve on the Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao). I lost all the photos of the second half of my mission. It still hurts me to think that I might never find them again. I had caviar on the two-year anniversary (a few weeks before I went home). We all contributed a few mil to buy the small jar. And it was rather terrible. (Dustin)
  • As a North American missionary there were only a handful of times I spoke English to my companions or other missionaries. (Heather)
  • It changed my life forever and forged my testimony into an unbreakable shield of faith, hope and love for my Heavenly Father and his Son Jesus Christ. (Disney)
  • When I arrived, there was only one mission under Presidente Portal. After my first transfer, the mission was divided into the Caracas and Maracaibo missions; I stayed in the Caracas mission under Presidente Miller. When I arrived in country, there was only one mission and one Stake. When I left, there were two missions and four Stakes. The nation blossomed in the Gospel while I was there. (Nik)
  • Interesante e intrigante era ver tantos edificios y saber que en tantos edificios habian pocos miembros de la iglesia, saber que por muy bien que le enseñases no comprendian la verdad, sino que la rechazaban. Saber que el templo estaba dentro de los limites y poder entrar. (Ederson)

What was the weather like?

  • Hot, hot and rainy, and hot again. Simon Bolivar said that Venezuela is the land of eternal primavera. I disagree. It is the land of eternal verano. (Dustin)
  • Hot, humid and rainy. (Disney)
  • Depends on where you are. I started in the hottest place and then was transferred to to coldest area and the change was big.  (DeAnn)
  • Caracas was temperate, the Andes were quite cool (they were part of the mission when I arrived; my first area was San Cristobal), the llanos were quite hot, and the Orinoco region was hot and humid (San Felix was my last area). (Nik)
  • Intermedio, habian zonas calurosas pero tambien de clima refrescante, un clima variante dependiendo de la zona donde se ministrare. (Ederson)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

  • Que hay variedad de personas, que son amables, corteces, tienen buenos modales. (Jessica)
  • Todooooo me encanta en especial el poder visitar el templo. (Linda)
  • Everything. I have such fond memories of all the people I met. My companions, the culture, the people we contacted, the members singing on Sundays… Everything. I loved it all and I still do love it. Venezuela is my second home. And I still do enjoy an ice cold Malta Polar when I can find it. (Dustin)
  • Missionary service is how God blesses the lives of His children all over the world. It was a privilege to be the answer to the prayers that some might say God has forgotten, but our service showed that he very much knows us and remembers us always. (Heather)
  • I love them miss them you never forget them. (Disney)
  • I loved how loving and open the people were. (DeAnn)
  • I absolutely loved the people and was honored to serve among them. While the work was hard and exhausting at times, it was the best experience of my life up to that point. (Nik)
  • Habian sitios peligrosos en su mayoria, pero pienso que aun con todo esos peligros, alli habian y hay personas personas hermosas y preparadas para escuchar el evangelio. (Ederson)

Any packing/clothing advice?

  • Embalar la maleta para tomar aviones evita el daño de la maleta en el aeropuerto. Y llevar poca ropa, a casa llegas con muchisima que tus compañeras y miembros te obsequian. (Jessica)
  • Siempre llevar lo necesario. (Linda)
  • Take pride in looking good. If you look sloppy, people will not take your message seriously. Bring paraguas for the wet season, two pairs of good shoes in case one gets wet, and a smile at all times. Don’t pack too many unnecessary things. Just clothing, scriptures, studying material, and the necessary toiletries. All the rest is a distraction from what truly matters. (Dustin)
  • Yes, try to find a missionary that just came from your mission and ask them what to pack. (Heather)
  • Light weight wherever possible! Some areas are quite hot and humid. (Nik)
  • Solo lo necesario, 2-3 pantalones, 3-5 camisas blancas, algunas corbatas, sus zapatos, sus escrituras, su reloj para llegar a tiempo a cada cita, su placa y su manual. Y alguna pijama, ropa para salir a prestar servicio, y para salir a comprar. (Ederson)

What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?

  • Principios mas claros, atributos de Cristo mas pronunciados en mi vida, el éxito de tener trabajos, buenas notas en la universidad gracias a los principios u/o conocimientos sobre la planificación diaria y semanal. Las bendición de tener una perspectiva mas clara, positivista pero real de las cosas al establecer metas, compartirlas y llevarlas a cabo. Mas valor, fuerza, destreza, capacidad de enfrentar desafios y resolverlos. La admiración de mis amigos, familiares y personas no miembros de La Iglesia. (Jessica)
  • Son muchas el poder obtener mas conocimiento y el poder sellarme por templo y eternidad con mi esposo y pare de contar son muchas las que se reciben a poder servir al Señor. (Linda)
  • It’s hard to count them all. Knowledge would be the largest blessing I have received. First, that God loves us. Second, that Jesus Christ is our Savior, who paid the price of our sins in order to give us a chance at redemption, despite our imperfections. Next is that He has established a church here on this earth. I am blessed with the knowledge that these things are true. I do not doubt them. My knowledge is not perfect, but I do know these things to be true. I also kept active in the church after my mission, due to the habits I formed while serving. That led me to my wife, who I met at church. My serving a mission also inspired my brother to turn his life around and serve a mission. I owe almost everything I am blessed with to my mission.   • I always say that I left on my mission a spoiled little girl and came back from my mission a woman with a new found appreciation for everything I have. (Heather)
  • To marry my best friend in the temple and to have 8 wonderful children in the gospel. (Disney)
  • I learned a great knowledge about the church. I learned to have a great love for serving others and I just love the people. (DeAnn)
  • A greatly strengthened testimony and love of the Gospel, as well as a vastly increased ability to love people. In so many cases, it was like I was meeting old friends I had forgotten for a while. (Nik)
  • Aumentar mi conocimiento y afianzar mi testimonio de la veracidad de la iglesia. En la universidad mayor interpretacion en las clases por haber leido las escrituras. Poder saber que hacer o decir para ayudar y en la mayoria de las veces animar a otros a permanecer firme y frente a los desafios. Mi familia aun sigue unida a pesar de los desafios. (Ederson)

What are some skills you gained?

  • El hacer planes y establecer metas. El de establecer hábitos de la buena alimentacion , ejercicio diario. El de saber como resolver conflictos El de trabajar en equipo. (Jessica)
  • El poder hablar con todo el mundo sin penaa… (Linda)
  • Talking to people. Confidence in myself. The ability to think quickly when in danger. Sensitivity to communication from the Spirit. Compassion for those less fortunate than I. Love for people I have not yet met. I am not perfect in any of these skills, but, I began to realize and refine them on the mission. (Dustin)
  • Listening and leadership skills. (Heather)
  • I become an excellent salesman and an adviser. (Disney)
  • I learned to speak Spanish and to love the people in Venezuela. I miss them and wish I could return. (DeAnn)
  • I learned patience above all. I also gained a great love for the Spanish language. (Nik)
  • Expresarme de manera fluida y sin temor con las personas de mi alrededor sean o no conocidas por mi. Mejor comprension al leer algun documento. Iniciar conversaciones. Dirigir y coordinar un grupo de personas (En el salon de clases lo he aplicado mucho). Ser mas osado y sincero con las personas. (Ederson)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?

  • Si no recuerdan el propósito por el cual están en la mision ahora, sin ese propósito no podrán soportan los 18 meses o 2 años de su mision en el servicio del Señor. (Jessica)
  • Por llegar ver a las personas como Jesucristo las veia. (Linda)
  • Do not hold yourself back. Jump into the work as soon as possible. Immerse yourself completely. Do not worry, God will take care of you. Do not think of home, all will be well. Just focus on finding families and teaching them with the power of God in your words. (Dustin)
  • The mission goes by way too fast, so don’t waste a single minute- get to work and stay working hard. (Heather)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries called to Caracas?

  • Si no tienen un propósito personal por el cual irán a la misión ahora, ¡busquelo! ¡hallenlo! ¡creenlo! Y aferrence a el; porque este es el que les ayudara a continuar con valor, fortaleza y ánimo de hacer todo cuanto ustedes puedan para El Señor. Y que aquellas personas y generaciones que esperan por ustedes puedan ser bendecidas por todas las eternidades. (Jessica)
  • Vallas sin temor, desarrollen fe, escuchen al Espiritu y el Señor hara lo de mas si SON OBEDIENTES. (Linda)
  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is true. There is no doubt about that. Truth does not change according to a person’s opinion or point of view. Truth is eternal. Please serve a mission that you can be proud of. If you have to wonder if you are serving well, you are probably not. Don’t waste too much time hanging out at investigators’ or members’ houses. It is very easy and very fun, but it can cause more damage than good. Investigators and new members need to be converted to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, not converted to hanging out with the missionaries. Leave your apartment on time. Have patience through the tough times. They will always last longer than they should, but they will get better. Be thankful. Your happiness depends on your attitude. Be tough and don’t complain. Work hard. Be strictly obedient to the mission rules, and you will be blessed. Be humble and allow yourself to be changed into a better version of yourself. Remember that non-members will not want to change their lives and join the church unless they see something special in you. If you try to be a normal person during your mission, the people will not see any reason to change. Always smile. Love the people you live with. Love the people you see on the bus. Love the guy who hates you. Don’t argue with people, it never ends well. Never worry about what you will say. Study the scriptures, and open your mouth. It will be filled with the correct words in the moment you need them. Remember that Christ loves the people you teach as much as He loves you. Everyone matters. Every minute matters. (Dustin)
  • Ask the Lord every day how you can be an instrument in His hands and He will answer you in many, many different ways- as simple as giving someone a hug or helping someone by telling him/her how great they are, or listening to your companion (they need a friend etc.). (Heather)
  • Is the greatest experience you will ever have, you will refer to it through your entire life, so forget yourself and go to work. (Disney)
  • Tengan animo, no pierdan el tiempo que le dedican al Señor no haciendo nada, al contrario dediquenle todo el tiempo, nunca dejen de estudiar las estudiar, busquen saber dar respuestas a sus propias preguntas primero y a las de las demas personas, preguntense el porque de las cosas y busquenlas, apliquen el “buscar conocimiento tanto por el estudio como por la fe” y el Señor y su Espiritu no les dejaran solos. Amo leer y meterme en la mente de las personas para saber que es lo que piensan y que les afecta su progreso personal. Deseo recordarles que NO HABRA OTRO TIEMPO COMO ESE. NO, nada se compara con ese tiempo, querran volver a veces el tiempo para volver a pasar esas experiencias pero sabran que no se podrá. Vayan y vengan con sus mentes despejadas de remordimientos, si cometen errores, si desobedecen alguna regla sea en poco o mucho, si creen que no hay mal en algo, si consideran que se sienten solos, para todo eso les recomiendo hablar con el Padre y hacer uso de la expiacion de Jesucristo y, mas aun hablen con un lider si es posible con su Pdte de Mision. Quisiera decir mas pero basta con decirles que YO por medio de mi deseo de saber recibi la visitacion del espiritu santo en mi vida confirmando que ésta es la iglesia del Padre, es SU iglesia, se que esta es su Obra, se que Jose Smith fue y es y seguira siendo un siervo y profeta del Padre, quien saco el registro que YO examine y que hizo sentir confianza, seguridad y paz a mi alma, llamado “El Libro de Mormon”, y yo testifico que es verdadero y me gozo en saber eso, porque lo considero vital y sagrado, y estas palabras son mi condicion frente a mi Padre.   • I can’t think of any, other than a warning to all gringos learning Spanish to be careful with the word Embarrazada. It does NOT mean embarrassed!! (Dustin)
  • Well in Spanish you should never ask a person working at a store if they have any eggs, especially if they’re a man. At one grocery store you had to ask to purchase eggs from the butcher, because the eggs were over the counter. I asked if he had any eggs so that I could purchase them. “¿Tiene huevos Señor?” What I should’ve asked if there are any eggs that I can purchase. “¿Hay huevos? Because in Spanish eggs can also mean slang for a man’s private parts and to ask a man if he has eggs is basically asking him if he is a real man or a wimp/sissy. And in a machismo society a woman asking that question is not a good thing. The butcher laughed and didn’t take it personally but did tell my companion to teach me the right way to ask for eggs at the grocery store. (Heather)
  • One time, we were with an investigator and there was tears in his eyes. I asked about them but asked about the rain in his eyes. (DeAnn)
  • In one of my areas, previous sets of Elders had taught some of the local kids to say “What time is your name?” as a joke. It was very funny hearing them try to speak back to us with the bad English they had learned. (Nik)
  • Practicando el idioma ingles tuve muchos errores y mi compañero se reia de mi al hacerlo. Escuchar las frases y las formas de expresarse y hablar de los otros misioneros que en la mayoria de las veces eran diferentes e incluso de pais. Mismo idioma pero distintas expresiones reunidas en un apartamento y una ciudad o lugar desconocido para ministrar es una gran aventura. (Ederson)
