What were some favorite foods?

What was a funny experience?
- I had an investigator pretend he hated missionaries and scare a greenie I had. (Joseph)
- Our Mission President hit and killed a sheep on his way to see us in Ephraim. I had a companion that would only eat peanut butter, and carried a jar with him to dinner appointments. (Seth)
- It wasn’t funny then, but every time we talk about and think about it, it’s just funny…one of our investigators came from a polygamous family and he passed all the qualifications to be baptized. So on the day of his baptism, my companion and I did lots of prep for it. We did the program and my companion came up with this brilliant idea (not) for us to make our own video using 2 of the church movies and just edit the part we wanted to show. So it took us all day to make this edited movie for the baptism…little did we know we were late like 15-20 minutes so we rushed to the chapel and the next thing was so embarrassing. When we got to the chapel everyone was there. The chapel was packed and we forgot our investigator came from a polygamous family and our Mission President and his wife were there as well. Oh, how I wanted to die…everything went wrong from there. The movie we prepared didn’t have a sound…like I said, now talking about it, it seems funny but then it was horror…the mission then announced at our next Zone Conference that we are never to edit movies and use must use them as they are. - My companion and I came home for lunch one day. I went to grab the key for the apartment and realized I had left it in the apartment. Thinking quickly we pulled the screen out of the window and opened it from the outside and I climbed in to open the door. A week later, the landlady showed up. She was inspecting the apartment and she made sure to remind us to not forget our keys, because past missionaries had taken out the screen and climbed in the window, “but I’m certain you two would never do that,” she said as my companion and I looked each other sheepishly. - Lots of crazy cold nights with just us Sisters working at the Vernal Temple open house. (Stephanie)
- I guess it is appropriate to share that my companion farted in the middle of a prayer (nightly planning). It got to the point where it hurt to laugh. Missionaries laugh at the smallest things. (Stephen)
- Running through the sprinklers coming back from proselytizing before going to the Visitors Center for afternoon shift. (Jill)
- I was in the mission home with a bunch of other missionaries. One elder said “honey” and it devolved into a “where’s my super suit” joke from The Incredibles. (Jackson)
What was a crazy/dangerous experience?
- Driving in the snow. (Leonor)
- Tracting a trailer park in the dark. (Joseph)
- Guy pretended to be an investigator. He wanted to be baptized. He was writing a book. Had to involve the Genesis Group to deal with the situation. I had a total of 24 companions. I was the mission babysitter of sorts. Had a lot of troubled companions. Oi. (Seth)
- One preparation day when serving at BYU campus, we called around for a member to take us and do our shopping and bless her little heart an elderly lady was willing to take us and I think she is in her 80s… I think we bump into 3 different cars on the road while driving and she scraped cars in the parking lot…I was so thankful when we got home in one piece….lol (Atelaite)
- Faith walking in a snowstorm to a town that was 15 miles from our normal area. We didn’t see a car for the first hour, and I was sure the cold was going to get the best of us. It was really stupid, wouldn’t recommend faith walking in the snow. (Daniel)
- I crashed a car on my mission taking a left hand turn. There were two other elders in the car… one was with us for the day. My companion was sitting in the back with a broken arm. Next to him was a a box of tacos we had just bought. As I turned left, I heard the tacos fall to the ground. I turned my head back briefly to tell my companion just to leave them and not hurt his arm more. That’s when I hit the truck on the side of the road. (Patrick)
- In one area, I had a lady stalk us and someone else try to run us over as we walked down the street. (Stephanie)
- I remember our district decided to go sledding. Our zone leaders brought this sled that can fit four people. So me and three Elders hopped in the jet sled. This happened in January so it was already ice. We were going really fast down the hill so the Elder at the back got off, then me and my companion and this other elder stayed and crashed. We all got hurt. It was scary, crazy and dangerous. My companion dislocated his shoulder. He was driving with one arm. After that, the mission was never allowed to go sledding again. Good times. - Trying to walk from the Visitors Center to Green Valley in 100 degree heat and praying for a ride. (Jill)
- We were driving up a canyon on a preparation day and our driver was going at least 60 miles per hour the whole way. we almost had a head on collision with an eighteen wheeler. (Jackson)
What was a spiritual experience?
- Having so many temples around, and having the privilege to work in a temple. (Leonor)
- Managed to baptize quite a few eternal investigators…some had been investigating for 50+ years. That was always a cool experience. Got a full tour of the Manti Temple, seeing everything. (Seth)
- One of the many experience was one investigator wanted to surprise his wife by being baptized. We visited their home to teach their son because the mom asked if we could teach their 8 year old son the missionary lessons before he got baptized…keep in mind this was a part member family…the dad offered to sit in on the discussion but wasn’t interested in the church. By the time we visited 3 times with this family, the father was asking more questions and showing interest. The wife had no idea and sometimes we would talk with the wife at church and she always mentioned how her son wished for his father to baptize him but she knew that can never happen…the husband accepted the invitation to be baptized but asked us if we would not let his wife know until the moment he walked into the font to be baptized…so the only people who knew this was the investigator’s brother-in-law who would baptize him and the Bishop other than us missionaries. So to make long story short, the wife thought her son was the first one to be baptized but when the baptism font door was opened and the husband was the one in the water to be baptized the wife couldn’t hold her surprise and how shocked she was she was and was just crying the whole time…so after the husband was baptized he was given the priesthood and he baptized his son and that was another dream that the son and mom didn’t expect so it was very spiritual. - It took the testimony of an investigator for me to realize how true the Book Of Mormon was. (Daniel)
- My companion and I were with our ward mission leader. We weren’t sure where to go. We said a prayer and asked the Lord where we should go. We felt like we should go visit someone who had cancelled an appointment earlier in the week that we hadn’t had the opportunity to see yet. We went there and knocked on the door. No answer. We knocked again. No answer. I turned to my companion and said that we should leave and we began to walk away. Our ward mission leader didn’t move and said, “Elders, I feel like we should try one more time.” I shrugged, it wouldn’t hurt. I knocked on the door and we waited. Someone answered the door…the man’s roommate. He invited us in and we learned that he had been taught by missionaries before in Salt Lake City, but since he had moved down he had lost contact with the church. He had been praying that missionaries would find him again. (Patrick)
- I had an amazing spiritual experience with Elder Holland at the St. George Temple Visitors Center. Also, every baptism was such an awesome spiritual time. (Stephanie)
- Too many spiritual experiences. I was new in the area and my companion and I were still figuring out how to teach together. The first week, he was taking over all the lessons but we had companionship inventory so it got a lot better. Anyway, this lesson will be the first time we were gonna teach lesson 1 to a non-member I think. I remember bearing my testimony about how much Heavenly Father loves their family and that Joseph Smith was a prophet and that I know that families are forever. Something like that. In the middle of my testimony she said “stop, you’re making me cry.” It got quiet all of a sudden. In my mind, I imagined a needle poking a heart that’s why she cried. But really the Spirit touched her heart and testified of the things we taught. My testimony of the spirit became stronger that night. She committed to read the Book of Mormon and pray about it. Her husband was working on getting re-baptized, their son was eight. They eventually got baptized. I saw them on New Year’s Day a few months after they were baptized. I was so happy to see them. - Taking 10 German bikers on tour and getting referrals from 3. (Jill)
- When I got a confirmation from the Lord, after nine months of struggling, that he loves me and is proud of what I was doing. (Tara)
- I went to the temple three times with questions and I got an answer each time, that really helped. (Jackson)
What are some interesting facts about the Provo Mission?
- We had a mission song, and we started to open our mission the great way, putting a lot of focus on love and spiritual matters more. (Leonor)
- A lot (not all) of those who served in leadership have since left the church. On your mission, you think that Zone Leaders and Assistants are as good as they get, and when you get into leadership it’s tempting to think that way as well. But some of the best missionaries I knew were never a District Leader, and some of the Assistants everyone wanted to be like have left the gospel. Also, in Provo you’re a celebrity. The main challenge in the mission is pride. (Seth)
- One of the highest baptizing English speaking missions. Not much knocking and proselyting but a lot of teaching from member’s referrals. (Atelaite)
- You baptize more in Utah then going abroad. (Daniel)
- We had three temples in our mission, and two under construction. Most missionaries were assigned to two or three stakes, rather than wards. (Patrick)
- At the time, we had the highest baptism rate for an English speaking mission in the USA. Because we have the Provo MTC in our mission, we had cards we had to carry so someone from the MTC did not think we escaped. (Stephanie)
- You get to eat with families every night (if they forget they buy you pizza). I was) told that the Utah Provo Mission is the number one baptizing mission (English). People honk when they see you walking, they offer to give you a ride or shout “Elders!”. We cover stakes and it is such a blessing because you get to learn from great leaders of great wards. All the people I taught were member referrals. Church buildings everywhere. Members everywhere. Temples! Temples are so close! (Stephen)
- My parents live there now. I visit a lot. My grandmother served at the temple there for two decades and lived in St. George while I was growing up. (Jill)
- I was called to be a St. George Visitor Center sister. I was known as go go grandma because I was in constant hiding from my family. My grandparents for much of my mission, served in the St. George temple. (Tara)
- Everyone knows what missionaries do and what The Church is. It made it very interesting. There were many times when someone reported to the mission president something or one of the investigators tried to get out of doing something because someone else did it. (Jackson)
What’s the weather like?
- Weather changed constantly, but I loved it. (Leonor)

- Snow in the winter and heat in the summer. (Daniel)
- In the summer, it was hot and sunny and in the winter, it was snowy and cold. (Patrick)
- Well I spent my one winter in Orem and both summers in St. George, so very cold, and very hot. (Stephanie)
- It’s cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Dry. Dry. Dry. I used chapstick every day when I was in Utah. I love cold weather! (Stephen)

- It was very dry. It didn’t rain a whole lot and moisture itself was hard to come by. (Jackson)
Any things you really like about the area/people?
- Everyone is very nicest willing to serve.The landscape and atmosphere is beautiful. Always look forward to the mountains and sunrise. (Leonor)
- I’m convinced you love the people immensely wherever you serve. And the place. At least, I think you should, if you’re doing it right. (Seth)
- Members were our tools to help find investigators…loved it. (Atelaite)

- I loved the desire to help that the members in our area had. I also loved the fact that the people we taught were willing to listen. (Patrick)
- Members did not see missionaries much in my mission because we covered stakes instead of just a ward so they were always so good to us and willing to help any way they could. (Stephanie)
- I just love how they make you feel loved! They are so enthusiastic about doing missionary work! Members help a lot! I loved working with members of each ward. Because members love missionaries so much homesickness will go away. If they know you like something, they will get it for you. Like one family knew I loved whipped cream so before I left the area they got me a can of whipped cream, haha. (Stephen)
- People in St. George are open and friendly and willing to share their homes. It is actually a very diverse place too. (Jill)
- I found it easy to see these people the way the Savior saw them. They were amazing people. (Tara)
- I really liked and appreciated how down to earth most of the people were. Many were willing to help with the work or they were willing to listen when we had a bad day. (Jackson)
Any packing/clothing advice?
- Pack very warm closed that require for you to not wear so much layers, that way it’s more comfortable. (Leonor)
- Short sleeve shirts, non wool suits, extra pants and socks. (Seth)
- Pack clothes for all seasons especially summer and winter. (Atelaite)
- I’m over 30 now. I don’t have cool advice according to my kids. Every area has its unique challenges. St. George is hot and you get red dirt everywhere. Don’t buy expensive clothing, expensive clothing wears out just the same as affordable. You won’t return home in the suit you wore out. You will retire at least two pair of shoes. You will collect new ties, and you are bound to ruin every white shirt you own. (Daniel)
- Bring plenty of socks. Don’t collect too many souvenirs, as it makes transfers impossible. (Patrick)
- Be ready for anything. My whole mission could have been mild weather if my areas were reversed. (Stephanie)
- Just follow what’s in the packet and you’ll be fine. But remember, winter stuff is heavy. (Stephen)
- Bring clothes for mild weather in the winter and hot in the summer. Bring knee-his for the summer and comfortable shoes. It does get colder in the winter, so pack a warm coat too. (Jill)
- Get space bags or find another way to make things as small as possible. Two bags is not enough to bring all the clothes that you need. And really read up about the weather so you know if you need to bring things with you or if you need to wait until you get to your mission first. (Jackson)
What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?
- I was able to receive more strength in my life, able to witness miracles, and increase my testimony. (Leonor)
- Everything. I think all will receive many broad blessings – knowledge, experience, maturity, patience, etc. But if you’re willing and proactive, there are blessings unimaginable if you seek, fight for, and plead with the father for. Gifts of the spirit, revelation, etc., that can turn you from a good missionary into a Legendary one. (Seth)
- I have an eternal family…gained eternal friends from the mission as companions and members. (Atelaite)
- I have killer calves from all the walking. (Daniel)
- I came to know my Savior better, on a personal level. I learned to recognize the Spirit and to understand the scriptures. (Patrick)
- Stronger testimony for sure. Better understanding of the church, how it is run, and the history. (Stephanie)
- Wow. So many. Like what they said it is “the best two years FOR your life”. So true. I am a better person now than I was before I left. I learned the importance of daily prayer and scripture study, weekly church attendance. The simple things! It’s important that we do the small and simple things! I think the greatest blessing is that I changed and I was able to see families enter the waters of baptism and be sealed in the temple. (Jill)
- The blessings I got from my mission was the wonderful feeling of love from the Lord. (Tara)
- I honestly feel like I’m still waiting for something. I would say that some of the biggest things that I have seen is I’m more focused. I still get distracted, but it’s easier to get back on track. I also feel I’m a lot closer to God and I have a relationship with Him now. (Jackson)
What are some skills you gained?
- Planning better. Setting goals. Time management. Discipline. Love. Patience. (Leonor)

- I am a confident speaker. You give talks in church almost every Sunday. Sometimes it’s two talks on a Sunday, in different stakes. (Daniel)
- I learned Spanish. I learned to speak to everyone. I learned to speak publicly. (Patrick)
- Better at talking and connecting with people. Became much better at teaching. (Stephanie)
- I am better and more confident in teaching, training and speaking in front of many people. I got better at listening to people, asking inspired questions and focusing on them rather than myself. Also got better at setting goals and making plans to achieve the goals I set. I work well with members now. Study Preach my Gospel and you will be a great missionary. (Stephen)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?
- I wish I would had learn that a mission is more than teaching the gospel, but a commitment to serve God and accept you will be stretched and grow spiritually. (Leonor)
- The more prepared you are, the less of your mission is spent playing catch up. (Seth)

- Don’t expect it to be the Called to Serve video. You will create your own experiences. So have an open mind. (Daniel)
- I wish I had read out of Preach My Gospel more. (Patrick)
- I wish I had a strong knowledge of the gospel and who I was. (Stephanie)

- How much I was going to love it? I wouldn’t have missed my family and home the first little bit as much. (Jill)
- I wish I developed my social skills more. I was very withdrawn before and I think the mission would have gone better in the beginning if I was more social. I also wish that people didn’t hype up missions before. It’s difficult sure, but nowhere near as difficult as people always say it is. (Jackson)
Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Provo?
- Expect discouragements to come, fight for the gifts of the spirit, you can never be too humble, and learn what true humility is (it’s not being a door mat). (Seth)
- The Spirit should be your number one tool and obedience is the key for the Spirit to be with you. (Atelaite)
- Love the ward members, they are are 90% of your success. Take lots of pictures, and write your Mom, those letter will be your best journal. (Daniel)
- Don’t let others belittle your mission. Just because it’s Utah doesn’t mean it’s not a mission. There is plenty of work to be done there. You will get to see how the Church is supposed to be run. (Patrick)
- Get to know the gospel well. You will be going to the greatest and in some cases, weirdest mission in the church. Every second will be worth it. (Stephanie)
- My advice is to read and study the Book of Mormon and Preach My Gospel and of course, other church materials. It will help a lot. When you get to the mission field, listen to your Mission President. Be humble. Learn to take counsel from mission leaders. Follow the missionary handbook. Obey with exactness. It will change you. I promise you that. Heavenly Father is happy when we obey. I know that He loves us. We should not pick or choose who to share the gospel with. Heavenly Father wants His children to return to live with Him again. I know that Jesus Christ is the only way we can return to our Father in Heaven. I have become more acquainted with our Savior. He is a great example to me. Teach to the temple. I love the gospel and I love sharing it to our brothers and sisters. (Stephen)
- Study the scriptures. Start sharing the gospel with everyone before you go. Get excited! Be obedient. Love your companions. (Jill)
- The best thing I can say is be yourself. God calls us to an area where we can help people because of who we are. By being the best person you can be, you can be the best missionary you can be. God needs great people, not great missionaries. (Jackson)
What was a funny language mistake?
- Don’t try and talk like the locals in small towns, it’s insulting to them. (Daniel)
- In Spanish, the word “trastes” means dishes, except in Argentina where it refers to your rear-end in a not so nice way. My companion asked a family from Argentina is he could clean their “trastes.” (Patrick)
- I wished I got to know a another language on my mission. I did get to pick up some Navajo, which I tried to use as much as possible and got a few giggles out of the Navajo kids…..who knows what I really said. (Stephanie)
