What were some favorite foods?

- I loved making bacon wrapped chicken, throw on some spices wrap it in bacon bake it for 30 minutes give or take and voila lunch and probably dinner if you don’t already have a dinner appointment. (Shalah)

What was a funny experience?
- We used to send scripture texts every day to remind the people we worked with to read. One day we got a call from a recent convert telling us that she kicked her tenant (who was an investigator) out because of the scripture we sent! Her tenant had been stealing from her and we sent 3 Nephi 13 which talks about thieves who break through and steal… (Brooke)
- A lot of things. Weird shenanigans with my companion tended to be the majority. My trainer had a terrible habit of parking next to large banks of earth so I had to crawl out of our car. I laughed for days over that. One time a member gave us a ride in their van, a husband and wife, and we were at a stop light and in the lane next to us a really pretentious camaro pulled up and started chomping at the bit as if going to gun it out of the red light. The brother driving started jumping the gas and his wife shook her head and just went, “Oh no….”! Then the light turned green and he floored it out of the light and as we passed the camaro out of his rolled down window he yelled “YOU JUST GOT SMOKED!!!” His wife was super embarrassed and my companion and I were laughing so hard there were legitimate tears. - The Jingle Jam that we as a mission celebrated every Christmas time was a great time to come together as missionaries and to relax from our labors for a short time and have a fun time. (Scotty)
- Elder Bednar visited the mission and for the first and probably last time, the whole mission got together!!! Greatest experience. (Candie)

- We were riding bikes and the light was about to turn red so I yelled at my companion lets go!! But I didn’t make, it so I slammed on my hand brake from my back tire but I wasn’t slowing down so I hit my front break and it worked and I flew over the front of my handle bars! Good thing I wore black leggings every day, and to finish it off the Elders were at the stop light and got front row seats to me crashing. (Claire)
- Could hear the upstairs neighbor couple loudly making babies one night. We got let into a house where three young adults were present. During the lesson I asked what do you believe a prophet is? Answer: money! (Stephanie)
What was a crazy experience?
- Our house got broken into. They took everything from jewelry to cheese! It’s only the second time a house was broken into in the TLM though. (Brooke)
- Sometimes just driving alone is really dangerous. But I would have to say it was all the times stray dogs ran in front of my bike barking at me. Watch for stray dogs. (Shalah)
- Being threatened to get shot. (Scotty)
- There was this crazy women that some sisters gave my new companion and I and she pretty much almost kidnapped us. No joke she was certifiably crazy. (Candie)
- A crazy mean dog basically tried to eat my companion and me. We were terrified. But this random guy was sitting inside his car, so we knocked on the hood and told him we wanted to get in his car. He got out and faced the dog while we ran away. Later the elders told us we should have hopped in the bed of a truck. Brilliant! Next time, for sure. (Anonymous)
- Getting chased by wild dogs Biking in snow/dust storms (Karl)
- We were proselyting in a super dangerous area. We had no idea! We had actually found a guy who we were teaching (but we needed to get a member to befriend him) so we brought the member. After the lesson, he was like “Sisters do you know where you are?” We said no…(not really knowing what he meant). He was like “this is the most dangerous area here in Abeline. Drug and prostitute houses” both my companion and I were like 😳. He even called his sister who was a police officer and asked her “what would you say to two pretty young girls that came into this neighborhood?” She answered with I’d tell them to get out and get out fast! We don’t even go alone as police officers” And then, we realized the guy we were teaching was a drug dealer. We hadn’t really realized anything till after the fact. Every time we were there, people were constantly coming in and out of his house. Heavenly Father was definitely there with us that day to keep us safe. (Claire)
- Had nowhere to park the car to go tracting so picked a driveway covered in weeds. Found an investigator and was busy for two hours. The police had been called about our “abandoned” vehicle in the meantime. Out tracting and saw a ward member unloading groceries in her garage. We sneaked up on her and just started carrying items in her house. Her initial reaction was priceless! Had free pizza anytime we wanted from a CiCi’s restaurant owned by a member! Out knocking and could see the weather getting quite severe. The door opened and the guy said, What are you doing out here?! Don’t you know there is a tornado warning going on?!” He made us come in and we were able to re-activate a family that we had knocked into! (Stephanie)
What was a spiritual experience?
- Every day was filled with tender mercies if I looked for them. Sometimes it was talking to someone amazing on the street. Sometimes it was learning something new from the scriptures. Sometimes it was the love I felt for the people I worked with each day. (Brooke)
- We were teaching a man in his 70’s who had been baptist and then Church of Christ. He had been listening to the Book of Mormon on CD. It was my last lesson with him before being transferred and it was such a wonderful experience to be there as he broke down into tears and bore his simple and honest testimony that he had been searching for the truth his whole life and “The Book of Mormon is the most true thing on earth.” (Shalah)
- Being gathered together at the end of those two years in the mission home to enjoy each other’s company and to be spiritually uplifted for the last time as missionaries. (Scotty)
- A special spiritual experience I had was taking a convert to the temple for the first time to do baptisms for the dead, and both she and I brought family names. Not like any experience I have ever had doing baptisms before. (Candie)
- My companion and I were teaching a less active woman. We were talking about the doctrine of Christ. She had a lot of questions about repentance and I remember her specifically asking, “Can I really be forgiven??” She was so desperate and sincere. As my companion and I testified to her of the power of the Atonement and if the deep love that Jesus Christ as for her, the Spirit was so strong. I remember thinking to myself, “This is amazing. We get to sit here in this woman’s home and do exactly what Christ would do if He was here. He loves her so much and He is allowing us to be His hands for her today.” It’s just amazing being His full time official representatives! (Anonymous)
- There are way too many to count. Some times they are simple and small, but you have to look at the small tender mercy ones every day to get through tough times. (Karl)
- So I had just been called as a trainer,and I had only been out 4 months so I was pretty nervous. I wanted so badly to give my trainee an awesome experience! And I was pretty stoked, we had a lot of potential people…but lo and behold once she got there EVERYONE dropped us. And we had to start from scratch. So we do a lot of knocking and riding our bikes to talk to as many people as possible! One day we were riding and our phone rang, so we got off our bikes and saw it was our district leader. My trainee answered the phone. Someone from their ward had a member referral for us. We were beyond excited! So we set up an appointment and I remember being so excited but so nervous. So we got there and it was a small family mom, dad and kid…my first family! Sherrie, the wife, didn’t want anything to do with the “Mormons” but she had just had a heart attack and realized she needed Jesus (her words). So we taught the first lesson which was the restoration. And I just remember Sherrie slouched in her chair feet on the table making snide remarks. In my head, I was like “oh man…” But then we bore testimony and everything changed! It was amazing. As we were getting ready to head out, Sherrie asked will you come back tomorrow? We were like HECK YES! And that was the awesome beginning of their story! So they go baptized of course haha and a year later I was able to go back and see them get sealed. One of the most amazing things you can witness! (Claire)
- I was studying the Institute manual about the Abrahamic Covenant and the Spirit testified of the beauty of it all to me. We were conducting tours of the newly built Lubbock temple. A Latino lady was standing in the endowment room listening when the Spirit testified very strongly of the truthfulness of what went on in the temple. (Stephanie)
What are some interesting facts about the Lubbock Mission?
- The TLM is the second biggest stateside mission! It goes from the Oklahoma border to the Mexico border, and from Abilene into New Mexico. It has a temple. It’s extremely flat. Things like grass don’t really grow, and if they do it takes a ton of irrigation. (Brooke)
- It’s the second largest land mass mission in the continental states. It’s got at least two major cities on the map and Guinness book of world records for most churches per capita, and the mission office city is the home of Buddy Holly. There’s a Buddy Holly statue somewhere. Oh and of course Midland and Odessa are the home of Friday Night Lights. Also we have aliens, thanks to Roswell NM. (Shalah)
- Texas Lubbock Mission: The Lord’s Mission. The area of the Texas Lubbock Mission is the buckle of the Bible Belt (meaning more often than not there were more churches per capita in that area than most places in the world). (Scotty)
- One of the largest missions land wise in the U.S (Karl)
- Everybody knows Jesus! There are so many different churches in Texas. Everyone knows who the Mormons are, but their knowledge is the polygamist’s and what they’ve read from anti-material. (Claire)
- Finding Faith in Christ was introduced in my time as well as the idea of getting away from the discussion booklet format of teaching lessons. (Stephanie)
What was the weather like?
- Snow and cold in the winters and in the upper 90s/100s in the summer. Almost always windy. (Brooke)
- It depends it’s such a range. But just know that at either time of year you will either be REALLY REALLY HOT, or REALLY REALLY COLD. Prepare for both. It snows in the panhandle and you can swelter to death in San Angelo. It’s either or. (Shalah)
- Bitter cold wind that chills you to the bone. Some snow. Extreme heat in the summer. (Jessica)
- First summer in my first area, we had 39 straight days of over 100 degrees. The weather did settle down the further I went into the mission. (Scotty)
- Weather is crazy. All season can be felt in one week or even a day. (Candie)
- It is surprisingly similar to Utah weather. It’s slightly more humid, but I stopped noticing that after day 2 of being there. It does get freezing and windy and snowy in the winter so dress warm. (Anonymous)
- Crazy!!!! Prepare for bipolar weather. It could be sunny and 80 degrees and by night fall could be snowing. If driving always keep a coat and boots in your car. We also get crazy dirt storms called haboobs. (Karl)
- Hot in the summer and cold windy in the winter! Never thought I’d have to wear 5 layers in Texas. (Claire)
- Mostly hot. One day in Clovis, NM we had all weather possible: it hailed, rained, snowed, and gusted all in one afternoon! (Stephanie)
Any things you really like about the area/people?
- I love the Southern hospitality and the sweet nature. Everyone takes care of you. Even the Presbyterian lady who won’t let you in her house will give you a water bottle and a granola bar. (Shalah)
- The people are wonderful. Texas pride is amazing and New Mexico is freeing. (Jessica)
- They were a very faithful group of people who loved their Savior, Jesus Christ and tried their best to serve Him the best that they knew how. (Scotty)
- The people in west Texas and Eastern New Mexico are incredible. They know their bible and are very prepared for the Book of Mormon. (Candie)
- The people love Jesus Christ and they know the Bible. A lot of them go to church every week and church activities throughout the week. It’s cool to have such an important common tie to the people around you. I also LOVED the flat. There is something beautiful about it. The sky stretches out forever. Nowhere else have I seen such beautiful cloud formations, thunder/lightening storms, sunrises, etc. (Anonymous)
- I LOVE TEXAS. The people are amazing. Most very nice and such a Christian community. Some people just have misunderstood Mormons. (Karl)
- People were always willing to let you into their homes and talk about Jesus. And seeing other people’s experiences were pretty amazing. (Claire)
- The Texan spirit of religion and being proud to be there! (Stephanie)
Any packing/clothing advice?
- Like I said about the weather just be prepared for any and everything. (Shalah)
- For Sisters biking, straight skirts that have stretch. A-line skirts get caught in spokes. A good coat and winter gear. Light clothes for the summer. (Jessica)
- Short sleeve white shirts, breathable socks, and gray pants. (Scotty)
- Wouldn’t bring my favorite clothes, but definitely be fashionable. (Candie)
- Skirts that are good for biking and walking in wind. I had a bunch of stretchy “pencil skirts” that were AWESOME because they wouldn’t blow up in the wind but the could also stretch perfectly when biking. Also fleece lined tights are stellar for winter. You can get them at Walmart. (Anonymous)
- Need a variety of everything. For hot and cold weather. And don’t be deceived by its Texas. It DOES get cold!!! The chill factor when the wind picks up can feel dealthy 😉 (Karl)
- For sisters: get black leggings and cut them to about knee length and wear them every day! It get pretty windy in Texas. No joke my first time off the transfer bus, the wind caught my skirt and totally pulled a Marilyn Monore! It’ll be hot in the summer, but you’re gonna be hot and sweating buckets of sweat anyways. Bring tall knee high boots for the winter. I loved that mine came all the way to my skirt so my legs were always covered. Get light fabric shirts that don’t show sweat! (Claire)
What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?
- My mission strengthened my testimony of the gospel. It strengthened my relationship with siblings. As I learned to be more sensitive to the Spirit, I received answers from day to day. I was blessed with health to complete my mission even though I got really sick. (Brooke)
- I feel like I became really and truly converted. I learned a lot but the biggest change was my commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ. I made such amazing friends as well and that has continued to be a blessing after leaving. (Shalah)
- I received the blessing of being able to strengthen my relationship with my Heavenly Father, become more like His Son, Jesus Christ, and be able to more readily recognize and act upon promptings from the Holy Ghost. (Scotty)
- My understanding of the gospel and of the Atonement increased a hundredfold. My ability to love grew so much. My companions are now some of my very best friends “in real life.” One of the most important things for me was learning the importance of families. I learned more about my own family and my love for them grew. I learned more about the purpose of families and of God’s plan for the family. The knowledge and testimony I gained in this topic has changed my whole eternity. (Anonymous)
- I grew so much as a person! My love for the gospel and my savior increased. I leaned how to communicate better and how to talk to people. My social skills increased a ton which is helping me now start my own business. I feel I understand the gospel way better now which is a huge blessing. (Karl)
- I was able to see how much the gospel can truly bless someone’s life! Growing up in the gospel you rarely get to see it. But when you see someone come from the opposite side of the spectrum, it’s a testimony booster for sure! I learned the why behind the gospel. I still can’t comprehend everything but I know there’s a purpose and I understand why it’s so important to be obedient to the commandments. (Claire)
- Gained confidence, a spirit of go-get’em, a bigger perspective on life and missionary work, a more defined sense of what I wanted/not wanted in a marriage, and a much greater understanding of what fellowshipping should really be! (Stephanie)
What are some skills you gained?
- Communication, listening and teaching skills. (Brooke)
- Planning and staying organized and waking up on time. (Shalah)
- The ability to work hard even when times get tough and people may not want to listen to you. This work ethic allowed me to realize that it is not just a cliche to hear that hard work does pay off and the Lord does in fact realize your efforts as you strive to keep His Spirit to be with you as a constant companion. - I learned how to talk to complete strangers about the gospel (which helps you talk to complete strangers about anything). I learned how to exercise faith and recognize miracles. I learned how to be a leader. I learned how to be a follower. I learned how to teach. I learned how to study. I learned how to bike in a skirt. I learned how to be a member missionary. (Anonymous)

- Being able to talk about the gospel without being scared of not knowing what to say if someone asked me a hard question. But I also learned that it was ok to say “I don’t know, let me study it and let’s meet tomorrow and talk about it” I learned how important it was to remember people’s names, I got pretty good at it! What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?
- God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called. (Brooke)
- I wish I had been more selfless and stopped worrying about my own comfort in favor of serving everyone around me. Especially my companions. (Shalah)
- Know that as you go along you’ll get better. We start in different places, just because someone else seems to look like they are much wiser and a better missionary, doesn’t mean you are horrible. You need to learn from where you are already at, and Heavenly Father is just fine with that. (Jessica)
- I wish that I was more familiar with the missionary lessons as well as the inspired counsel found in Preach My Gospel. (Scotty)

- All throughout my mission I wanted to be obedient. At first, I think I expected perfection of myself–I thought I had to be the perfect teacher and the perfect contacter in order to be a good missionary. Later, I realized that perfection is unrealistic and it has nothing to do with your success as a missionary. It’s more about your desires and your progression. If you desire to do His will and be faithful and humble, He will use you for good, and that makes you a good missionary. (Anonymous)
- Knew more of preach my gospel. Had read the Book of Mormon. Knew more about the bible. (Karl)
- That I would get sick and only be out for 13 in a half months…because then I would have worked that much harder and complained less on bad days! Don’t take your mission for granted, you never know when it could be done. (Claire)
- Not been so hard on myself. Just be patient. To learn sooner that trying to reason/argue with an “anti” doesn’t work. (Stephanie)
Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Lubbock?
- Treasure every day, even the hard ones. Just as Alma testifies, every affliction can be swallowed up in the joy of Christ as you turn to God. Decide now to love every area, companion, President and investigator, and you will. It is a choice. This is a marvelous work and a wonder, and if you let Him, God will make a miracle out of you. - Just jump in with two feet and love everyone you meet. They may never accept your message but let them know that members of the church of Jesus Christ are full of charity the pure love of Christ. As you do, you will not only be blessed in the work but you will grow on such a personal level you won’t recognize yourself when you come home. (Shalah)
- Be prepared to work hard even when the people or weather may not be in the best condition, be charitable to those who reject your message. (Scotty)
- Love what you teach and love the people whom you teach it too. (Candie)
- Ask Heavenly Father early on (if you haven’t already) to know that this is where He needs you to be. And when you get that witness, treasure it and then go out and hit the road running! He loves you and He needs you, and there is so much in store for you as a missionary and as an individual–especially in the Texas Lubbock Mission! Look for His hand and guidance and prepare to see miracles. (Anonymous)
- Enjoy everyday. Find small and simple things to rejoice in daily. Remember a mission is hard work. Yes there are times when crazy miracles happen, but in many ways a mission is like being back at home when you can easily fall into a rote routine, doing the same thing every day. Work hard every day and be obedient from the beginning! It makes such a difference! (Karl)
- When in doubt, bear your testimony! People can always bash with scripture and doctrine but no one can touch your testimony. It totally stops people in their tracks and they have no idea what to say. Listen listen listen!! Ask lots of questions. (Claire)
What was a funny language mistake?
- I was learning Spanish and instead of saying “is it ok if we end with a prayer?” I said “is it ok if we end your life?”… (Brooke)
- Not really a mistake but be careful asking the Spanish elders how to say something. They might give you a silly (bodily function words) haha. (Claire)
