What were some favorite foods?
- I really just enjoy pasta in general. Chicken and salmon are both solid choices as well. (Brandon)

- Fresh fruits and vegetables that were homegrown, cowboy cookies, freshly caught fish. (Emily)
What was a funny experience?
- After I had picked up another set of missionaries and we were on the way to a Zone Conference, a police officer pulled behind us and pulled me over. We waited for a while and had no idea why I had been pulled over. The officer eventually walked up and told me that my car didn’t have any insurance and I had to awkwardly explain that it wasn’t my car and that it was owned by our church. It was all around awkward. (Brandon)
- Once my sister sent my companion a package with a fake return address filled with a prank for me, that way she could still prank me from across the country. When I found out I flipped my chair over. (David)
- We went to visit a referral and he was a little bit crazy… He swore at us when we knocked on the door but then invited us right in. His house reeked of cigarettes and weed, and there was chewing tobacco everywhere. He kept shining a light in his closet saying, “There’s a bunch of blue metallic spiders in here.” We looked… And there were spiders alright, but they were not blue and not metallic. When we started teaching him about Joseph Smith he said, “Oh Joe… Yeah there was a guy named Joe next to me in the mental hospital. He never slept.” We quickly decided to get out of there, so we asked if it was alright if we said a prayer. He said, “Oh yeah of course. I won’t listen,” and he turned around. Needless to say, we didn’t go back! (Emily)
What was a crazy experience?
- While I was bicycling in my first area and I was going across a crosswalk while we had the walk sign, I had a car decide that they didn’t want to stop and I got hit. (Brandon)
- One time as we were riding home for the night, a meth head driving by called out too us, I started peddling towards his car, and he backed up and tried to run us over. When we got out of the way he chased us with his car for a few blocks until we ditched into the bushes and hid until he gave up and drove off. (David)
- My companion and I were walking one night in a new area, knocking doors because we had nothing to work with when we came into the area. It was winter so it got dark really early. We looked both ways to cross the street and there were no cars so we proceeded, only to have a car come out of nowhere, speeding towards us! We booked it across that street and were so grateful to be safe. However, when we finished on that side of the street, we went to cross again, and the same thing happened! And it was the same car! We decided we should probably get in our car and drive somewhere else to be safe. (Emily)
What was a spiritual experience?
- I had the opportunity to give a blessing to another missionary and it just really influenced me. That missionary and I are still very close. (Brandon)
- My companion and I were teaching a woman who was a referral from other missionaries, and in the middle of the lesson her husband walked in. He was so excited to see us and had so many questions! As we taught him the message of the Restoration he was beaming. The spirit was almost tangible! He agreed to offer the closing prayer, and it was the most powerful prayer I had ever heard. He talked to Heavenly Father about how when he walked into his house and we were there, “the Spirit was like a bomb,” and he never wanted it to leave. He said there was a light he hasn’t seen before. By the end of the prayer my companion and I were both in tears! (Emily)
What are some interesting facts about the Salem Mission?
- The Salem Mission was created in July 2013. The current Mission President is one of the coolest guys that you could possibly meet, but he finishes in July of 2016. (Brandon)
- It’s a fairly new mission. It was created in 2013. An interesting fact is that because of our mission leadership council deciding to take away the iPad’s from the missionaries, the Church became very interested in the reasons why, so they did some research and decided to start a new pilot with new iPads and different trainings and such. We also cover such different geographical places in Oregon. We get the coast, the Willametre Valley, and the high desert! (Emily)
What was the weather like?
- They were going through a drought while I was there and so it didn’t rain nearly as much as I had expected. Rainy in the winter, and relatively warm during the summer. Also rainy in the spring and the fall. (Brandon)
- Rainy. Always rainy. Except in the three month drought they called summer. (David)
- The winters get chilly and very rainy. It’s dark and cloudy a lot in the winter. The summers are pretty nice, with not as much rain. It only gets a little humid. It doesn’t get too cold and unless your east of the Cascades it doesn’t snow. The summers can get pretty hot though! (Emily)
Any things you really like about the area/people?
- The members of the wards did an amazing job of making the ward you were serving in feel like your home ward. They were very supportive of us and would often honk or wave to us while we were out and about. (Brandon)
- Oregonians don’t judge quickly and accept people who aren’t like them, especially if they are passionate about something. (David)
- The members are generally very friendly to the missionaries and are very helpful. Many people who are not members are nice to the missionaries too! There’s just a lot of good people in Oregon. They care about each other, and most are fairly religious. (Emily)
Any packing/clothing advice?
- Rain jacket. A very nice rain jacket. You’ll use it plenty. Solid pair of shoes because a lot of the areas are biking areas. Good pair of jeans as well for the service that you’ll do. (Brandon)
- A good rain coat. Stain resistant shirts. Oregon rain stains things yellow. (David)
- Rain jacket with a hood :). Leggings and boots for the winters! You can bring an umbrella, but Oregonians don’t use them! (Emily)
What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?
- I matured an immense amount. I have had so many comments since I’ve been home about how much I’ve changed and the things that I do differently. I would say the biggest blessing I gained however is simply a good testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. (Brandon)
- Amazing friends. I was taught better how to pray and receive answers to my questions. The Lord taught me about who I was and how to be a better me. (David)
- I came to know my Savior on a personal level, and I learned how to be like Him. I saw the power of prayer. My family was well taken care of. I made some lifelong friends. I gained a firmer testimony of the Gospel and learned how to “build upon the rock” for eternity! I also learned how to prepare to have an eternal family. (Emily)
What are some skills you gained?
- I actually talk to people now, so that’s pretty neat. I’m much more focused and efficient with my time which has helped immensely since I went directly into a job and school after returning home. (Brandon)
- Scripture study, language learning, bicycle endurance racing, communication skills, bucking hay. (David)
- I used to be really, really shy, so I learned how to step outside of my comfort zone and communicate with people–especially strangers! I learned how to effectively plan, study, and teach. I also learned how to work hard even when I feel like I can’t go any longer. (Emily)
What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?
- I wish I had a better understanding of the basic truths of the Gospel, especially the first three lessons in Preach My Gospel. (Brandon)
- I wish I knew how to let go of the past. I wish I knew how to cope with stress without any tricks. (David)
- I wish I would’ve known that, even though everyone says it’s going to be so hard, it can still be so much fun. Sometimes I thought that having fun wasn’t allowed! I also wish I would’ve been more bold at the beginning of my mission. I was too afraid to invite people to do things like be baptized and come to church because I was afraid they’d say no. Once I got over that fear, I saw more miracles! (Emily)
Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Salem?
- It’s seriously such an amazing experience. There were days and even weeks that I struggled and wasn’t sure if I was supposed to be on my mission and considered going home, but I hung in there. And I will forever be glad that I did. There is so much that I learned because I stayed and gritted my teeth. (Brandon)
- The Lord loves his missionaries and if you fight for Him now, He will give you everything He’s got on judgment day. Let the people know, if nothing else, that you love Him. Because no one can tell you otherwise. (David)
- Study Preach My Gospel and The Book of Mormon as much as you can before you come. Don’t feel like your testimony isn’t strong enough or that you don’t know enough. “If you have desires to serve God, you are called to the work!” The mission is just as much a growing experience for you as it is for those you will teach. Also, yes, it is going to get hard. Of course it is! This is the work of the Lord and nothing was ever easy for Him! Plus, nothing that’s really worth it, is going to be easy. But don’t be discouraged when it gets hard. Keep pushing forward. Work as hard as you can because it goes by so fast. CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY, especially when it is hard to be. I regret the moments I spent complaining and choosing to be grouchy. And don’t forget to never stop praying. 🙂 The Lord really does guide this work! Love your mission… It is so great! (Emily)
What was a funny language mistake?
- I confused ewe Sam (the father) with ewe Samon (the chief) and accidentally referred to the father of the family we were teaching as the chief and asked him how a chief loves his children. (David)
