What was a funny experience?

  • After being told in the MTC to never eat from the street vendors, the APs took us to a street vendor in front of the bus station to eat on our second day in Mexico. (Aaron)
  • We found a snake on the street, it was scared trying to find the outskirts. We captured it and brought it home to figure out what to do. That’s when we found out out District Leader had a huge phobia of snakes. LOL he literally became some one else LOL. (Pedro)

What was a crazy experience?

  • We just were done with one of baptismal services for one of our converts. As soon as our convert stepped out of the chapel, he began running home. We were asking what was going on, when a shower (literally) of rocks started to fall feet away from us. Seconds later we knew why our convert had run, a gang was after him, because he had crossed over their territory (where the chapel was). We ran as fast as we could, but could not catch up. Last thing I saw was our convert running in the distance and almost being run over by a car when crossing a busy street. (Pedro)

What was a spiritual experience?

  • It’s hard to describe with words, but we were teaching an investigator for 3 weeks already, and he was still hesitant about baptism. So we were inspired to show Wilford Woodruff conversion story video. As soon as the clip ended, the room was filled with a calm and peace I have only felt on sacred grounds, like the temple. He was about to cry, and we could not speak. My companion and I looked at each other and communicated clearly, but uttered no words. Our investigator then broke the silence because he didn’t understand what had happened, and we just said (now with words) “That was the Holy Ghost, and that’s how it feels. It was confirming that what we taught you is true”. He immediately confirmed his desired to be baptized. A year later, he married his girlfriend in the recently dedicated Monterrey Temple. (Pedro)
  • Muchas, creo el miedo de llegar a predicar y no equivocarse, ore por mí primer compañera de la misión, deseaba me enseñara todo para no fallar y desde que llegué a CCM supe quien sería. Una respuesta a mi oración y así fue. Hna Morales Aponte Elia. A la fecha mi gran amiga. (Sarai)

What are some interesting facts about the Mexico Monterrey South Mission?

  • It’s been split into 2 missions now. (Aaron)
  • It’s as modern as any first world city. Many Americans still believed it was a town like Hollywood shows it. Monterrey is surrounded by a mountain chain that is quite impressive. Most people are Catholic but they are very open to hear about the gospel. The city has the best Fan crowd in all Mexico. The city pauses for 2 hours while the local teams play each other. If you are not a soccer fan, you will need to become one or you won’t have a true connection with people. Be ready to drink coke, because Monterrey is the #1 consumer of Coca-Cola per capita in the world. (Pedro)

What was the weather like?

  • Hot. (Aaron)
  • Hot most of the year, upper 90’s low 100’s during the summer. Fall is the best season of the year. Winter is cold, upper 40’s to mid 50’s, but that’s bearable for most people with a light winter coat. (Pedro)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

  • They are very loving. (Aaron)
  • They are the most straight forward people I have ever met. They don’t beat around the bush too much (although some do). Racism is almost non existent, and people call each other by the color of their skin and nobody makes a big deal about it. Americans get called names all the time but none takes it offensive or cares whether it was racial or not. In fact some times it’s a compliment. I loved that most people speak decent English, at least to understand important stuff. They make English a priority in their studies. (Pedro)
  • Realmente el lugar no fue lo importante, sino las personas, uno aprende amarlas sin conocerles y deseas su bienestar espiritual y terrenal. (Sarai)

Any packing/clothing advice?

  • Only take a few long sleeve shirts. Take a pair or two of long garments, or long thermals.
  • Pack for hot weather but have winter clothing as well for when season starts. You’ll be glad you took this to heart. If you have sensitive skin, replace lotion with sun screen. You will save money and you have a nice tan by the end of your mission. Please pack the most durable pair of shoes you got. No specific brand, just comfortable tough shoes. And for the love of all that is sacred, shine your shoes every day. (Pedro)
  • Yo llevé ropa una talla más grande afortunadamente, y no tuve que comprar por mi peso pero ahí la ropa es muy barata. (Sarai)

What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?

  • I got a closer relationship with the Savior. That in itself, pays for all the sacrifice made. I got to understand church policy and procedures better which helped my in my role as a church leader. I have tons of friends who are still in the church and whom I still communicate. I have now a deeper love for the converts and their families. (Pedro)
  • Primero un testimonio, que no me ha dejado a pesar de los desafíos en mi vida actual. Y segundo me dio, mucha salud, un trabajo, un matrimonio en el templo, una familia, unos hijos y padres buenos para mi. Muchas bendiciones. (Sarai)

What are some skills you gained?

  • Leadership. Planning. Interpersonal relationships. Sales techniques. Motivational techniques. Public speaking. Self assurance. Patience. Solution making. Among others I polished. (Pedro)
  • Hablar en público, averiguar más sobre un tema o persona, saber escuchar, ser más compasiva pero al mismo tiempo muy directa sin miedo a decir la verdad. (Sarai)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?

  • That not all missionaries are perfect. I had this idea that everyone was trying as hard as I was, but it was disappointing finding out the opposite. I wish I knew more about who I was serving, the people I was teaching. But that’s not possible until you get to the mission field. (Pedro)
  • Tenía un testimonio y un deseo enorme de predicar, pero vivir el Evangelio, diariamente me hizo más fuerte, para decidir. (Sarai)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Monterrey South?

  • Forget about yourself and lose yourself in the work. Work every day and work hard and smart. Learned follow the prompts things of this. And make sure your companion also knows and help to recognize them. Work to pay for your own mission…don’t let anybody else pay for that, even your parents. No matter what they tell you, you’re in the mission to baptize people. If you try to fulfill your mission baptizing, the rest of the stuff will fall into place. No one likes a missionary that is Lazy or that complains about the people or the work they’re doing. Eat whatever they serve you be grateful for it and if you get sick the Lord will heal you. (Pedro)

What was a funny language mistake?

  • Calling the Pope a potato el Papa vs la papa. (Aaron)
  • I spoke English and Spanish before my mission. What was funny for me is revealing that to my American companions. They were so surprised it was funny to see their faces when it happened. (Pedro)
  • Nunca me gustó hablarán otro idioma que desconocia frente a mi. Es una falta de respeto para mi. (Sarai)
