When did you serve?
- 2015-2016 (Brittany)
- 2013-2015 (Chase)
- 2003-2005 (Stephen)
What areas did you serve in?
- San Nicolas, Guadalupe. (Brittany)
- La Pastora, Sada Vidrio, Cadereyta, Bosques de San Miguel. (Chase)
- Libertad, Linares (the greatest in the mission), San Nicolas, Reynosa, Juarez. (Stephen)
What were some favorite foods?
- Posole. Picadillo. Chipotle anything. Tortas de tamales. (Brittany)
- CAMPECHANAS, hamburguesas mixtas, gringas, mole. (Chase)
- Street tacos! All varieties!! The mayo/chili powder corn on the cob may seem weird at first, but it’s delicious! I never cared for mole or menudo. (Stephen)
What was a funny experience?
- The culture shock was enormous…many things that were and are different. (Brittany)
- Getting in orange fights with young kids/teenagers in Linares. (Stephen)
What was a crazy experience?
- The taxis are crazy drivers and are not always safe. (Brittany)
- One day we were riding our bikes through Cadereyta and a fuerza civil helicopter was circling around where we were. We went up to a man on the street corner and asked him what was happening and he told us that someone was just shot 3 blocks away and the killer is on the loose! (Chase)
- Getting pepper sprayed late at night in a bad part of Reynosa. (Stephen)
What was a spiritual experience?
- We taught a family and the mother did not know how to read so she did not know how she was going to be able to gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon if she can’t accept Moroni’s invitation to read. We read out loud with the family 3 Nephi 11 and then she prayed to God to know if it was true. The Spirit testified to all of us that it was true and she wept tears of joy and was baptized three weeks later. (Chase)
- Anytime someone is golden and prepared. When you find someone willing to devour everything. The best is teaching a whole family. (Stephen)
What are some interesting facts about the Monterrey East Mission?
What was the weather like?
- It’s variable. One day it could be 110 degrees in the shade and the next 45 degrees. It is cold, nice and cool, warm and super hot. (Brittany)
- The saying in Monterrey is “Don’t like the weather? Come back in 15 minutes”. It is always changing. Lots of rain from hurricane season. HOT HOT HOT in the summer (called the canicula) and a bone piercing cold in the winter. (Chase)
- HOT and HOTTER. And then there is a month or two of a little chilly. Oh man. Prepare yourself. (Stephen)
Any things you really like about the area/people?
- They all seem like they are yelling when they talk, but really that’s just how they talk, it’s kinda funny. They are super funny and always looking for a good time. There are always parties outside and they always offered us beer, which we obviously politely declined. (Chase)
- Mexico is the greatest place ever. I long to go back. No greater people. So ready for the gospel. So humble. So kind and welcoming. (Stephen)
Any packing/clothing advice?
- Take a good coat that can be used for warmth and rain. Sweaters are a must and an umbrella for both rain and sunshine. Also a very warm sleeping bag would be good and rain boots that go to the knees because the rain is very torrential. (Brittany)
- Bring a variety of clothes. Definitely bring winter clothes because most people think Mexico is always hot and then freeze in the winter. (Chase)
- Good walking shoes. Sunblock if you burn. It’s hard to imagine, but it gets a little cold in the winter, so you’ll want sweaters or a nice coat. A blow dryer was awesome to warm up the bed before jumping in. The heat is hard to beat. Lots of water. (Stephen)
What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?
- TONS! A testimony, blessings for my family while I served, spiritual strength, many lessons to apply to the future. (Chase)
- Not a day goes by that I don’t use something I learned from my mission. I reflect on it daily. A second language is an obvious one, but I’ve really loved Spanish. I still think in Spanish sometimes, talk to myself in Spanish, and pray in Spanish. Spanish brings a whole new clarity and understanding to the gospel. (Stephen)
What are some skills you gained?
- Speaking Spanish, study efficiently, live with people from other cultures who I may not necessarily choose to be with, not have a fear of sharing my testimony, loving a culture I had never loved before. (Chase)
- Working hard dawn to dusk. Not being afraid to talk to people. Not fearing failure or rejection. A rock solid testimony. Teaching and conveying principles. Working with companions. (Stephen)
What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?
- FOCUSED ON BAPTISM. (Chase)
- Talk to your mission president. Likely one of the greatest men you will ever meet and know personally. You were put in this mission for a reason. Learn why. Don’t follow a companion down roads (figurative as well as literal) you know you shouldn’t. Speak up and let your leaders know if something is wrong. There is no shame. (Stephen)
Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Monterrey East?
- Know Preach My Gospel the best you can. Be friendly and talk to strangers. Try to have a strong testimony especially of the Book of Mormon and restoration. (Chase)
- Dig in. Don’t go in with the mentality of planting seeds, though that is a natural by product of being there and doing the work. The field is white already to harvest. Thrust in your sickle and harvest. Seriously love the people and bring in the harvest. Leave your fear at home. This is a great work and a great time to be doing it. (Stephen)
What was a funny language mistake?
- My companion from Peru accidentally used a word that in Peru means “to grab” but in Mexico is a very vulgar slang word. (Chase)
