What areas did you serve in?

• Ixtapan de la Sal, Independencia, Parque Via, Cuajimalpa, Metepec, Tenancingo. (Karen)
• La Crespa, Valle de Bravo, Cuajimalpa, Sauces, and Atlatlahuca. (Jackie)

What were some favorite foods?

• Tacos, Enchiladas, Milanesa, Tacos Durados. (Karen)
• Enchiladas, Tacos al Pastor, Milanesa, and pozole. (Jackie)
• Ain’t nothing like tacos al pastor with a coke de vidrio. Also loved las Aguas frescas, tortas al pastor y tortas de chorizo. Goodness gracious. (Justin)

What was a funny experience?

• I was walking on the street with my companion on the way to lunch and I stepped on the lid of a man hole that wasn’t completely set right and the lid doubled over I fell right in the man hole. (Karen)
• It was raining hard and I tried jumping over a gutter full of water and I fell in front of everyone in the middle of a busy town. (Jackie)

What was a crazy experience?

• Me and my companion somehow ended up on the top of a mountain looking for someone’s house. All of a sudden out of no where comes this very drunk man with a gun in his hand. We ran as fast as we could and escaped. (Karen)
• We almost got struck by lightning during a crazy electrical storm, it struck the ground only a couple yards away from us. (Jackie)
• Got chased down a hill by a guy with a hammer. (Justin)

What was a spiritual experience?

• Every day was a spiritual experience. Being able to share my testimony of Christ everyday was life-changing. Seeing people completely turn their lives around little by little through accepting the gospel was something incredible that strengthened my testimony each and every day. (Karen)
• All our zone meetings and conferences were so powerful. The Spirit was always so strong, I will always remember those special gatherings. (Jackie)
• Too many to count… Contacted Arnulfo and Liliana on the street one day.. Said their nephew was coming back from his mission and give his homecoming speech on Sunday so they’d be at church. Sunday came and went, no Arnulfo or Liliana. We get a referral from the visitor’s center from the Mexico City Temple. Go to contact it. Knock on the door. The newly returned missionary answers. We sit down with Arnulfo and Liliana and their daughter Liliana and it was amazing. They were baptized and are now the Relief Society and 2nd counselor of the Bishopric. We did nothing. It was the gospel and their willingness to learn and feel more. (Justin)

What are some interesting facts about the Mexico City West Mission?

• IT’S THE BEST MISSION. Number one baptizing mission in Mexico. Although it says Mexico City, a huge chunk of it has a lot of rural areas. We aren’t allowed to eat fish. (Karen)

What was the weather like?

• April through September was rainy every day. Other than that it was perfect. (Unless you’re in Toluca in the winter time, then it’s very cold.) (Karen)
• Spring weather all year around, but it can get really cold at night. August-February, there was a lot of rain almost every day. Overall the weather was nice. (Jackie)
• Rainy. When not rainy, sunny. Got realllllly cold, but very rarely. (Justin)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

• They are the nicest people I’ve ever met. They would do anything to help you out, members or not. They are so happy and a great example of what it means to be happy no matter what situation you’re in. (Karen)
• Many receptive people to listen to the gospel. Very humble people and very giving. (Jackie)
• Everything. It’s not the United States, so don’t treat it like that. Mexicans have great pride in being from Mexico. Live it up. It’s an amazing culture and people and they are ripe for the gospel!! (Justin)

Any packing/clothing advice?

• You’ll think it’s Mexico so you don’t need to bring a big heavy coat, but bring one. You’ll need it. Girls- bring combinations of skirts and shirts with a few dresses. (Karen)
• Rain poncho. A good one. And shoes. Good ones. I had Eccos. (Justin)

What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?

• A LOT of blessings. I have a different perspective on life and the plan of salvation. Things in my life just seem to work out. I guess I could choose not to credit that to me serving a mission, but I personally believe it is. God has blessed me in things temporal and spiritual. (Karen)
• A greater testimony of the Savior and His church. Precious friendships, beautiful experiences, and good life lessons. (Jackie)
• The worth of hard work. Relentless, hard, meaningful work. Not to brag, but I am now married to my beautiful wife Anna of 3 years. And I am a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force pushing a different kind of mission. (Justin)

What are some skills you gained?

• I learned how to tolerate just about anyone. I learned how to wake up to an alarm. I learned how to be obedient. I learned how to budget my money. (Karen)
• Teaching and better communication skills. (Jackie)
• Definite people skills. You’ll have a language barrier but that’ll slowly be broken down with time, (faster if you study or focus on the language real hard). In the meantime, they’ll love you for your smile and willingness to learn. I also learned that you can only do so much. Heavenly Father will help you make others feel the Spirit, but He WILL NOT make them change THEIR ways. That’s always up to them. At the end of the day, it’s okay if you rented a bus to pick up 10 investigators and none of them answered your phone calls or their door bells when you went to pick them up. You’re the one that tried. (Justin)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?

• I wish I would have read Preach My Gospel. I wish I would have had more of a basic knowledge the principles of the gospel. (Karen)
• I wish I knew the scriptures better, especially The Book of Mormon and the New Testament. (Jackie)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Mexico City West?

• Do just as President Whitehead says: love the people, be 100% obedient, work hard. (Karen)
• Be obedient, be faithful and hopeful. Work hard every day and enjoy every day. (Jackie)

What was a funny language mistake?
