What were some favorite foods?
- Tacos al Pastor (Steve)

What was a funny experience?
- When the baptismal font had bugs in it, so I rolled up my pants and went in there with a bucket to fish them out. (Cameron)
- I got to train a new elder from USA. He was fast tracked through MTC as he already knew Spanish fairly well. So he came very confident in himself. One of our first lunches or dinners (can’t remember exactly) the system gave us the food but put chillies on the side as she knew he was new and didn’t want the food to be too spicy. Always so thoughtful, I love those people. I had been in Mexico over a year and was fairly accustomed and enjoyed the flavor so I proceeded to add chilies. Not wanting to be outdone and very confident in himself, he proceeded to also add the hot, but even more than me. I warned him to go slower with hot, give himself time to adjust, but he insisted he could take it. What is it they say “pride comes before the fall”. (Kris)
What was a crazy experience?
- Getting jumped in broad daylight on a busy main street while my companion took off running. (Steve)
- When I almost got hit by a car after getting off a bus. (Cameron)
- Walking down a road in Mexico City. Residential area. I hear something like a flag snapping in the wind but really fast go over our heads. I had been out about 1 year and this was my first week in Mexico City ( up to this point I had been outside the city). So I ask my companion what was the noise. He calmly states it was a bullet. As we continued calmly along the street. At this point, I’m a little agitated. “Um shouldn’t we run, or something” ” No, it just encourages them to shoot more” was the reply. We do take the first corner available, but just kept walking like we were. Was just crazy. (Kris)
What was a spiritual experience?
- So many to list just one… But being blessed with the gift of tongues during a discussion early on in my mission when I still had not learned the language, was one of my most memorable. (Steve)
- My first baptism was very spiritual. (Cameron)
- Within first week on my mission. Met with a couple. They had been meeting with elders before I got there. I couldn’t follow the conversation very well, but basically they said they didn’t/couldn’t believe what we were teaching. I did the only thing that I could. I bore my testimony of the gospel. About the only thing I could do completely in Spanish. Had no effect on the couple but I felt the truth of the work we were doing and the truth of the gospel of Christ. (Kris)
What are some interesting facts about the Mexico City South Mission?
- One of the largest cities in the world. (Steve)
- We were baptizing over 400 people a month for the last year I was there. (Cameron)
- When I was there, they had 3 missions in Mexico City. Now there are many more. Goals were 1 baptism per week and 1 family per month. I was told in the airport on my arrival that that is what happens, work hard and it will happen. (Kris)
What was the weather like?
- Hot in the summer and cold in the winter, but no snow. (Steve)
- Warm, sunny. (Cameron)
- It is Mexico… sunny and beautiful. There was that ash week when Popocateped (the volcano near the city, probably wrecked the spelling) blew ash all over us. And the rain. I seem to recall during the spring that every evening almost like clockwork heavy rain. Rain so much streets would flood. Like 30 minutes then stop. So you would think we should just go back to the house (no cars to shelter in for us), but then it would just end. (Kris)
Any things you really like about the area/people?
- So much… People were great everywhere. Loved serving in Zijatenejo and Acapulco most because of the view! (Steve)
- Pretty much everything. The people were extremely hospitable and kind, most people were very nice, the country is really interesting to be in, it’s a fantastic place to serve. (Cameron)
- So friendly. Those people were just open hearted and kind. I remember eating a meal with a couple that lived basically in a cardboard house. But they insisted in feeding us. And hard workers too. We would be walking by complete strangers houses and be invited in to parties. So friendly. (Kris)
Any packing/clothing advice?
- Pack light. The people don’t have much either. Need good shoes with red. (Steve)
- Don’t bother bringing too many warm clothes…the only time it’s cold is when you’re in the city during the winter, and even then it’s not that cold. Bring a few pairs of shoes as they wear out very quickly and the shoes you can buy there are poor quality. If your parents send you shoes, make sure they’re in two separate packages so they don’t get stolen by the post office. Also, practice hand washing clothes as washing machines are scarce down there. - A good pair of walking/hiking shoes for p-day adventures to the Book of Mormon ruins. (Kris)
What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?
- Countless… But my mission was great preparation for the rest of my life. (Steve)
- I was blessed to marry a beautiful, wonderful woman, I have three amazing children, and I’m bilingual. I attribute all these to my mission. (Cameron)
- My testimony. My family. They life I enjoy today. (Kris)
What are some skills you gained?
- Testimony building, confidence in communicating with others, learning to work hard and over come rejection, learning to rely on the Lord for everything. (Steve)
- I’m bilingual, I can cook tortillas and make really good salsa, I know how to do laundry without a washing machine. I have much better personal skills. (Cameron)
- Leadership. Public speaking. Organization. (Kris)
What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?
- Dedicate myself earlier on to really memorize the discussions in Spanish and study the scriptures in Spanish. (Steve)
- I wish I hadn’t packed as much, I wish I’d gotten used to the sleep schedule before I left. I also wish I’d been in better physical shape, as we walked a ton and I was really lagging behind my companion for the first few months. (Cameron)
- Go big. You are only limited by your faith and works. You can help as many or as few as you have faith and works to do. But also remember you will be tested to that so don’t ever give up just keep working. (Kris)
Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Mexico City South?
- Go! Serve faithfully. Be 100% obedient. Do all you can then trust the Lord to do the rest. (Steve)
- Mexico is an amazing place full of amazing people who are very prepared and ready to accept the Gospel. Do not be afraid of speaking to everyone as they are almost all extremely polite and friendly. (Cameron)
What was a funny language mistake?
- I told a young lady investigator “I loved her”, when I meant to say “I wanted her” to do something in preparation for the next appointment. My companion had to quickly correct me because she started to blush. (Steve)
- One of my companions swore when he meant to say “Thank you very much.” I’ll spare the specific details. (Cameron)
- I spoke French before my mission. So I spoke Spanish with French accent. (Kris)
