What was a funny experience?

(Anonymous)
  • Hearing an old lady in a nursing home use one of the worst Czech swear words in her normal conversation. (Jennifer)
  • Finding a stuffed animal (camel) on hump day. Accidentally leaving a brand new missionary outside of a tram, then it left…seeing the look on him- the scared face was priceless! (Willie)
  • I was just new to the country and I couldn’t speak much, so my companion did most of the talking. At one appointment our hosts brought out a plate of banana cake and I helped myself to a few slices as everyone else talked. Pretty soon the plate was empty. The hosts brought out a new plate full of cake. I kept eating because I didn’t no what else to do. (AND my companion said it was rude to not eat what you are offered.) I gained fifteen pounds in a few months because I could eat. Speaking Czech, on the other hand, wasn’t easy at all. (Christine)
  • Teaching a homeless man who lived in a cave. We called him “batman”. He was our only investigator. (Funny and sad?…) I kicked a soccer ball straight into Sister Holubová’s face during sports night. (Also sad…) (Kasey)
  • A couple funny experiences were when a drunk man almost fell into my soup, and when my companion played a prank and switched her name tag with an Elder’s. When his companion went to introduce him he started saying, “This is my companion,” and then he exclaimed, “Sister _____!” (Heather)

What was a crazy experience?

  • Někdo nás jednou napadal. Ránu jsem dostal přímo do obličeje. (Anonymous)
  • Having a hair dryer almost explode in my hands, seeing a body bag being brought up out of the metro, being barked at by a crazy man on Vaclavske Namesti, all on the same day! (Jennifer)
  • Gun pulled out on us (this happened twice)- one ended up being fake. (Willie)
  • We were riding a train home from an outlying city to be home before curfew and a drunk man was the only other inhabitant in our car. He started saying funny things like he was flirting. We hoped he wouldn’t get off the train when we did, but he did! We decided not to lead him to our home and walk a confusing pattern up and down some streets instead. Sure enough he gave up (probably because we made him dizzy). (Christine)
  • Man pushed me and threw my stuff off a bridge during the Slovak registration in ’06. Dude spit in my face. Old lady answered a door naked waist down. I was playing with the elastic exercise band from the MTC and it snapped back and hit me in the face. (Kasey)
  • I felt safe on the mission. Although my companion’s and a member’s bag were stolen by gypsies. (Heather)
  • One day while tracting, a very strange man opened the door. We proceeded with our door approach. He asked us to wait at the door for a moment. While waiting we hear a lot of metal clanking together. Upon his return he was holding a rifle pointed at us a demanded we leave the building. He shut his door and we decided to move one floor down. On our next door approach he swung open his door and we hear the sound of his gun loading. We swiftly jumped in the elevator, which happened to be on our floor, and as soon as the door shut we heard a gunshot. Tracting the next few days was slightly nerve racking. (Kim)

What was a spiritual experience?

  • Možnost někoho učit od začátku do konce a potom ho pokřtít. Nejlepší bylo, že jsem ho viděl v chrámu, když jsem byl na návštěvě. (Anonymous)
  • Teaching a very humble man who felt the Spirit right off the bat and having him be baptized – finding his home through specific prayer. (Jennifer)
  • Tracting into a long lost family member of one of our investigators. The Spirit lead us to his family! (Willie)
  • I remember questioning the validity of a 14 year old boy who saw God. The people we taught would say how fantastic that was–how impossible. I started to believe them. I knew the church was where I found happiness throughout my life. I believed in a Savior. Then one day I pleaded with Heavenly Father to help me know that Joseph Smith was real and the restorer of His gospel. We were in an appointment and I was relating the first vision and quoting Joseph’s words about seeing a pillar of light. Although the investigators looked at me with smirks on their faces almost mocking me, I received a beautiful witness as I spoke those words that what I was saying was true! I have never again questioned it. (Christine)
  • Watching the restoration film with investigators. Watching the finding faith in Christ film with investigators. Singing at street displays. (Kasey)
  • I loved visibly seeing happiness increase for people who kept their commitments and came closer to Christ. Also, their countenances would shine! (Heather)
  • Feeling the guiding direction of the Spirit each day we prayed where to work . Bearing our testimony at every single encounter. (Kim)

What are some interesting facts about the Czech Prague Mission?

  • Všechno bylo zajímavé. (Anonymous)
  • The Czech Republic is one of the most secular countries in the world. It has a very rich an interesting history. Because Adolf Hitler planned to use Prague as one of his government seats after he took over the world, there was little damage done to it in World War 2. (Jennifer)
  • The area has lots of cool historic sites, remember you are probably only there once, make time to visit them and get to know the culture! (Willie)
  • It has hit the list of the most godless countries in the world (people are not religious). They love ice hockey and soccer. Beer is cheaper than bottled water. They celebrate major Christian holidays even though most don’t practice religion. Czechs will even admit that Czech grammar is crazy hard. Public transportation is 90% of the way people travel. (Christine)
  • Had Communism for 41 years, so it’s affected many Czechs’ view on religion. Members kept The Church going in secret during Communism. The inventor of soft contact lenses is from the Czech Republic. Czechs have thrived in tennis, winning Wimbledon and other major events. (Heather)

What was the weather like?

  • Normální. Teplo v létě, chladno v zimě. Krásné období. (Anonymous)
  • Like Idaho or Utah – 4 seasons but more humidity in winter and summer. (Jennifer)
  • Moderate. (Willie)
  • The climate is a lot like New York State weather: humid and warm/hot in the summer, dry and cold in the winter. Snowfall varies depending on the elevation. It rains a fair amount, but not like the Northwest USA. (Christine)
  • Like Utah, but with more humidity- Bring hand warmers (that you shake) for the winter. They truly help! (Heather)
  • Four wonderful and beautiful seasons. (Kim)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

  • Jsou všichni hrozně milí. Chápat a rozumět lidem i kultuře je těžké, ale stojí za to. (Anonymous)
  • The people lived at that time in still very humble circumstances – not everyone had a telephone, apartments are small. This taught me that it is possible to have less and still be just as happy. It is a beautiful place from a landscape point of view as well. (Jennifer)
  • They are mean, stubborn and rude, but if you get past that exterior, they are the best people you will ever meet! (Willie)
  • Even though the people may seem reserved and almost grumpy in public, they are some of the most loving and caring people I’ve met. A lot of them don’t have wealthy lifestyles, but they would give everything to you. At the time it was untainted by the western world, so the country was easy going and safe. (Christine)
  • They are very hospitable by offering you something to eat or drink while you’re at their home. (Heather)

Any packing/clothing advice?

  • Nevzít všechno na seznamu!!! Kup si věci v Česku! Bude to levnější a nebudeš mít velké a těžké kufry. Vem si jenom jedno kufr. Bude ti to stačit. (Anonymous)
  • Sturdy, comfortable shoes for summer and good boots for winter. Bring suitcases that can roll! (Jennifer)
  • Take a normal coat. Take good walking shoes that are waterproof. Take a good backpack (you need one that can last 2 years of daily use). (Willie)
  • Shoes that stay dry in rain and slush. Wool coat or other warm coat that can be layered. Your shoes must go on and off easily because you take them off at every visit. (Christine)
  • Ecco shoes are very comfortable and endure. You want comfort since you’re walking all the time and on cobblestone. (Heather)

  • Všechno, co mám teď v životě. Dostal jsem větší lásku k lidem, k Bohu, k vzdělání. Mám krásnou rodinu a krásnou budoucnu. (Anonymous)

  • Brought a suitcase with rollers! (Jennifer)
  • I wish I would’ve spent more time visiting the historic sites. I used Preparation Day to study and catch up on stuff. I wish I would had visited every historic site in my Preparation Day… Studying and washing clothes can be done at home at night… (Willie)
  • The language was hard and I wish I had exercised my faith for my language skills more. I wish I would have pushed through and been more diligent at practicing, even though I didn’t know it “well enough”! (Christine)
  • Recognize and follow the Spirit. (Kim)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Czech Prague?

  • Milovat lidi. Nečekat až umíš mluvit. Dělej, a nevymlouvat. (Anonymous)
  • Learn to really love the people and not think of them as being less than Americans. Remember people in another country don’t just speak another language but they also have a different mindset. This doesn’t mean that this mindset is not as good as the American mindset, it is just different and you can learn from it and be enriched by it. They are children of God just as anyone else. (Jennifer)
  • Keep every rule you can, but make time for fun things on preparation day. Also do as many things as you can with the members. It is people and relationships you will remember, not how many discussion you memorized or how fast you learn the discussions. The language will come when you speak with people… So do it! (Willie)
  • Read The Book of Mormon and become familiar with its teachings, bear your testimony in church and with your friends, pray and attend your meetings, if you have the chance, go with the missionaries. (Christine)

What was a funny language mistake?

  • Společník často spletl a říkal místo “Chci” “kecy.” Neuměl vyslovit “ch” a bylo to dost trapné. (Anonymous)
  • Just never say the English word peach out loud in public – it sounds just like a really bad Czech swear word! (Jennifer)
  • If you say, “I am hot” jsem Tepla, it means you are warm, which translates to “I am Gay”. It was always fun to watch young/new missionaries make this mistake! (Willie)
  • The words for vision and prison are very similar! (Heather)
