What was a funny experience?

  • Tracting in a foreign area when it was freezing cold & snowing w/out proper shoes. I also learned that I was naturally fluent in the New England accent from my jaw being numb in the cold (Saham Huoy)
  • I plead the 5th. (Mike)
  • The time my companion and I were riding our bikes in our skirts from a meeting in Warwick RI to our area in Cranston RI and some guys drove past, rolled down there window, and starting singing the wicked witch song from the Wizard of Oz (doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo I’ll get you my pretty, and your little dog Toto too!) (Mellissa)

What was a crazy experience?

  • Tracting through a long woodsy road, we actually came face to face with a grey wolf! (Emily)
  • Encountering a circle prayer & the potential golden member speaking in tongues (Saham Huoy)
  • Ice Hockey on Tarrywhile Lake in Danbury. Walking through the Projects in North Hartford at night and having gansters flash their guns at us. (Mike)
  • Downtown Providence on our bikes, near the projects at night. 😳 (Mellissa)

What was a spiritual experience?

  • Sharing a Mandarin language Book of Mormon with an old Chinese woman. We worked hard to figure out the numbers enough to point her to 3rd Nephi. Later, in her broken English, she excitedly tried to tell us the story of Christ coming to the Americas. (Emily)
  • The moment when I followed my instincts and listened to the Holy Ghost. Had to go see a young sister who had a baptismal lesson. She had questions regarding her concerns & I had scriptures ready to support those questions she had. She was able to take courage & set a baptismal date. She was baptized after I got transferred. (Saham Huoy)
  • Had many but the baptisms of Irene Iselin in Wickford RI, and Faith Linton in Hartford are definite Highlights. (Mike)
  • Teaching a guy about the apostasy, building back church using plastic cups and him asking the golden question, “what church has all of these truths that were taught before the apostasy?” Then we pointed to our tags and said “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints” 💗. (Mellissa)

What are some interesting facts about the Connecticut Hartford Mission?

  • In the country, the land is all settled and owned, but the trees grow everywhere, so it’s hard to see the homes that are there. … The bigger the gate, the longer the driveway. Tracting is less effective in these areas. (Emily)
  • This mission does not exist any more. (Mike)
  • Easterners seem cold and unreceptive, until you get to know them, then they are the most loyal friends for life! If you find their “loose brick” you can break down their walls. Build on common beliefs, and build those relationships of trust! (Mellissa)

What was the weather like?

  • Wet, whether it’s cold or hot. Wool in the winter is a must. (Emily)
  • New England surprised us all the time. Chill factors so cold it went right thru the bones! (Saham Huoy)
  • Bitter cold in the winter and sweltering Hot in the Summer. But beautiful all year round. Coming from Utah, the humidity in New England amplified temperatures more than I was used to. Got to tract through a Northeaster and a tropical storm. (Mike)
  • Humid wet and hot in the summer. Rainy and gorgeous in the spring and fall. COLD and wet in the winter. (Dress in layers and wear cotton garments and thermals). (Mellissa)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

  • They are standoffish at first, but once they let you in, you’re like family. (Emily)
  • Willingness & charitable hearts. Eagerness to serve others. (Saham Huoy)
  • The history, the accent, FALL in New England, all the old pretty colonial churches and old colonial houses. (Mellissa)

Any packing/clothing advice?

  • Wool, a good rain jacket. (Emily)
  • Less is more. Do not take more than what you need to bring. (Saham Huoy)
  • Thermals for winter and moisture wicking if possible for summer. (Mike)
  • Light breathable clothes for summer, comfortable shoes. Lots of cotton underwear because you shower twice a day in the humidity. Heavy long jacket for winter and waterproof winter boots to keep your feet warm. Warm gloves hat earmuffs/scarf. (Mellissa)

What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?

  • A wonderful bond w/ the few return missionaries I served amongst districts throughout the mission. An eternal friendship of a youth I once met & is now a devoted follower of Christ in our LDS church. (Saham Huoy)
  • Found my testimony, learned self confidence, learned compassion for others and not to be afraid of those who are different than myself. (Mike)
  • Too many to count! 💗 (Mellissa)

What are some skills you gained?

  • Dealing w/ multiple personalities from the many missionaries I served w/ & amongst. Organized. Cleanliness for sure! (Saham Huoy)
  • Open your mouth, Gospel knowledge, and learning to recognize the Spirit. Learned to sing. I am comfortable approaching just about anyone. (Mike)
  • People skills, study skills, organizational and time management skills, serving others =less selfish, learned how to pray for specific blessings and receive answers and promptings through the Spirit. (Mellissa)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?

  • Your companion is part of your assignment. Encourage, befriend, take care of, and pray for them as much as your investigators. (Emily)
  • Being more prepared in scriptural memorization. (Saham Huoy)
  • How hard a mission would be physically and mentally. Spiritually draining, but at the same time rejuvenating and so much joy. Having patience with myself and patience with investigators and companions. (Mellissa)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Connecticut Hartford?

  • Enjoy every bit of it. I wish I could take back time & do it again! (Saham Huoy)
  • Work hard but remember to have fun. Like Mary Poppins says, “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. Find the fun and snap, the job’s a game!” (Mike)
  • If you are obedient, work hard, and love the people, everything else will fall into place. (Mellissa)

What was a funny language mistake?

  • Not sure. Did many door approaches in Spanish although we were English speaking. They do have a dialect all their own in Rhode Island though. (Mike)
  • Trying to understand Rhode Island accent was fun with the letter “r” being dropped in words or added at the end of words. 😂 (Mellissa)
