What was a funny experience?
- Trying to leave gifts and hearts on peoples’ doors on Valentine’s Day and having to sneak around to not get caught. (Elise)
- We were going through the baptismal interview questions with one of our investigators, and when we asked if she committed any serious crimes. She said, “Si. Maté un gato” (Yes, I killed a cat). She was so serious that we just died laughing. (Brooke)
- Teaching first discussions on the bus trip from Santa Rosa to Eureka. (Justin)
- Teaching people who qualified as mentally insane. (Travis)
What was a crazy experience?
- Being in a house full of drunk men as we tried to talk to our investigator. (Elise)
- One time it was raining super hard and we were trying to turn left in our car, across two lanes of traffic. The lane closest to us stopped so we could go, but as we were turning, a car in the farthest lane was coming straight at us. I don’t know how we didn’t get hit, but angels were definitely watching over us. (Brooke)
- My companion and I almost got hit by a car crossing the street in Fairfield. We were walking next to each other crossing the street and a car blew a stop sign and turned where we were crossing. Somehow we ended up on opposite sides and the car passed between us. (Justin)

What was a spiritual experience?
- Praying in the locker room with three sisters who were just baptized. (Elise)
- SO many spiritual experiences all the time. In one of my areas, a member of the ward passed away, so a few sister missionaries and I performed “Abide With Me,” at the funeral. The Spirit was so strong and so many non-members came after and talked to us about what we believed. It was awesome! (Brooke)
- Giving a blessing to a less active member in Santa Rosa and having him tell me it was just what he needed to hear. (Justin)

What are some interesting facts about the Santa Rosa Mission?
- We were the first full mission to use iPads. We have the Redwood forests and vineyards in our mission. (Brooke)
- It stretches from the bay area to the Oregon border along the coast. (Justin)
What was the weather like?
- Really hot in the summer, rainy and then really cold in winter, but with no snow. (Elise)
- On the coast it was a mixture of sunny and foggy. It rained a lot during the winter. When you get more inland, it can break 100 degrees in the summer. (Brooke)
- Hot in the summer. Cooler in the Eureka zone. Woodland and Fairfield were very hot. (Justin)
- Hot and humid or rainy and cold. (Travis)

- Often foggy/hazy in the morning, then it would burn off as the day progressed. (Allison)
Any things you really like about the area/people?
- I love how beautiful it was- we had the Redwoods, the ocean and the vineyards. The people were so kind and loving. (Elise)
- It’s such a beautiful mission! You get a great variety of people and cultures. People are pretty family-centered and are just good people. A lot of the members just love the missionaries and are willing to help out. (Brooke)
- I met many great people. I was able to teach and baptize many elect, prepared people. (Justin)
- Their open-mindedness. (Travis)
Any packing/clothing advice?
- Pack clothes that can mix and match well, a rain coat, one pair of boots and a good coat. (Elise)
- For sisters, have a couple pairs of sturdy shoes and then some cheaper pairs you can replace a couple times. Boots are super helpful, along with a raincoat. Also, fleece-lined tights are the best. (Brooke)
- Pack mostly short sleeve shirts. Make sure to bring a thick jacket or a coat for winter. (Justin)
- Grey or blue loose-fitting khakis. No more than six ties. Shoes that appear dressy, yet reflect tennis shoes. (Travis)
What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?
- So many that they cannot all be named–my family has been blessed, my life has changed forever. (Elise)
- I’m still receiving blessings from serving. My family relationships are so much better, I’m a better student, I’m more hopeful about the future, and so much more aware of God’s love and blessings in my life. It sounds cliche, but it’s really like you live life in brighter colors during and after your mission. (Brooke)
- Saw people come to Christ. Prepared myself for my eternal companion. It helped me decide what I wanted to do for my career. (Justin)
- Everything I have. (Travis)
What are some skills you gained?
- I can speak Spanish, I can teach lessons and classes at church and give talks comfortably, and talk to people easier. (Elise)
- I learned how to talk to people, I used to be really shy before. I learned how to work hard, how to keep things organized and clean, how to be happy and positive during hard times. (Brooke)
- Organization, study skills, interpersonal skills, a strong understanding of the gospel and the scriptures. (Justin)
- The ability to convincingly teach the Gospel by the Spirit. (Travis)
What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?
- I wish I had been more bold and set real goals to be accomplished long-term. (Elise)
- I wish I knew I wasn’t going to be perfect when I got home. It sounds funny, but I think subconsciously we all think that. I would also tell myself that all I need to worry about is my efforts and God would take care of the results. (Brooke)
- I wish I knew more Spanish, I wish I had a better understanding of the New Testament. (Justin)
- I wish I knew that some missionaries aren’t always devoted to the work. (Travis)
Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Santa Rosa?
- Heavenly Father is sending you to this mission because it is perfect for you. He has a very specific mission experience planned for you, so trust Him and whatever happens. He absolutely knows best. (Brooke)
- Work and study as hard as you can now and each day on your mission and you will find success and happiness. (Justin)
- Ask more questions of those you teach and give less advice. (Travis)
What was a funny language mistake?
- Instead of saying “felicidad” for the word “happiness”, my companion said “Feliz Navidad”, which means Merry Christmas. So what she ended up saying was “You can have Merry Christmas as you live the Gospel”. (Brooke)
- I was English speaking but I made plenty of mistakes trying to use Spanish. (Justin)
