South Salt Lake Crime

What’s the crime like in South Salt Lake? (hot spot areas, etc.)

Worst places: 1. State Street 2. Main Street 3. 3300 South. (Chad, 2 years)
We have had a lot of car break-ins lately along. Hot spots are scattered. We do have a large population of homeless gathering around Harmony park, Jordan parkway, Maverick. Motel 6 is a big hot spot for crime. I went on several ride alongs with our police and they get so many calls there, in town suites and grace Mary Manor our homeless shelter. (Coery, 7 years)

Any advice for people moving to South Salt Lake?

It may not be the shiniest, newest or most beautiful city in the area, but the people who live here are top-notch. Some of the most friendly neighborhoods I have ever lived in in Utah. (Chad, 2 years)

It’s still a great city. We have such wonderful residents if you take the time to get to know them. There are always city events which are a great way to meet new people. (Coery, 7 years)
Get to know your neighbors, don’t leave anything valuable out where it can be easily stolen. (Melissa, 8 years)

South Salt Lake Stories

Share an experience you’ve had in South Salt Lake (fun, crazy, dangerous, etc.).

I have lived in some pretty nice fairly wealthy neighborhoods in Salt Lake County (i.e. Sugar House, Liberty Wells, Liberty Heights), but rarely met a single neighbor. After moving in to SSL I quickly had all my neighbors come over to introduce me to the neighborhood. On Christmas Eve I came home to a doorstep full of Christmas goodies from all our neighbors. Just the other day my neighbor from down the street came to snow blow my sidewalks. I have never lived in such a welcoming, loving, accepting and community based neighborhood as I have living in SSL. I’ve personally met and talked, both professionally and casually, with the Mayor and City Council, something that never would have happened in a larger city. (Chad, 2 years)
My first 4th of July parade in the US. (Attila, 6 years)
My first ride along with our police, it was such an insane night. I rode on a graveyard shift (was out 5pm tie 4:30am) during that time we went on a suicide attempt, drug overdose, a few calls at motel 6, a large group of teens broke into Granite High and we ended up chasing them around until they stopped, went on a DUI roll over on State Street which a truck struck a light pole and it snapped in half, luckily no one was injured. A huge house fire also happened on 27th south. (Coery, 7 years)

South Salt Lake’s Future

How do you think South Salt Lake will change over the next 10 years?

I believe that SSL will grow to rival it’s northern neighbor, Sugar House. With its convenience of travel, and opportunities of growth and revival via redevelopment, I believe SSL has the opportunity to become one of the most sought after cities to live. (Chad, 2 years)

I think we are going to see a lot of people (younger) move into the city while it is still more affordable than downtown SLC. (Coery, 7 years)

Our Police department is very involved in community outreach. Neighborhood watch, business watch, bowl with a cop (3 Thursday every month 3:30-5), Coffee with a cop (usually our police chief is there to listen to concerns or ideas (1st Wednesday of every month at village inn 9am), the good landlord program which helps to get good tenants into apartments and kick out those problem ones.
